Race 2: Mr Rental QTIS 2yo H'cap – 1200m

On return to scale a protest was lodged by S. Eilbeck, rider of the 2nd placegetter, OPINIONATED, against SUGAR HIT being declared the winner, alleging interference over the concluding stages. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the stewards patrol video it was established that from the 150m, Sugar Hit shifted out under pressure and brushed with OPINIONATED on 2 occasions. Whilst stewards were satisfied that this established grounds for the objection, they could not be satisfied that the interference suffered was sufficient to reverse the long neck margin between the 2 horses at the winning post and therefore dismissed the objection and correct weight semaphored on the Judge’s placings. At a subsequent inquiry, J. Lloyd, rider of Sugar Hit, was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift out when not sufficiently clear in the home straight.

POETMAN – Slow to begin.

TAKE A CHANCE – Tightened for room at the start and lost ground. Found to have minor swelling in the near foreleg following the race consistent with having received contact from another runner.

FORTINI – Slow to begin. After commencing to pull in the early stages, the saddle slipped forward and the rider lost both irons, placing him at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race.

FLAUTINO – Jumped away awkwardly.

TRIBAL ART – Jumped away awkwardly. Laid out rounding the home turn. Stewards questioned rider J. Lloyd regarding the performance and tactics adopted on the horse. He indicated that his intentions had been to be in a forward position however when the horse began awkwardly he was obliged to take up a trailing position behind BUKEKAYO. He indicated that he was forced to steady further near the 800m when inconvenienced whilst racing to the inside of FORTINI and this caused him to lose further ground. He felt however that the horse improved well into the race rounding the home turn and was doing its best work over the concluding stages.

VALERIE D’AMOUR – When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, in particular the pace set in the early and middle stages of the race, rider. T. Harrison indicated that she had not intended leading however when caught wide in the early stages she pressed on to the lead. Miss Harrison added that the horse overraced in the lead and raced even more keenly when EVERYBODY HAPPY improved to her outside near the 900m, and she advised connections that, in her opinion, they would be best served backing the horse up quickly as the mare raced too keenly in today’s event.

Race 8: Hot 91.1 Winter Provincial Stayers Series Benchmark 75 H'cap – 2200m

EULO – Got its head down as the start was effected and lost significant ground.

I’M HECTOR – Rider M. Cahill advised that from the wide alley he elected to take up a position at the tail of the field, and as the race was not run to suit, this resulted in him being further from the lead than he would have liked. He added that approaching the home turn he elected to shift wider when making his run rather than improving through the field as his instructions were to have an unimpeded run in the home straight. He added that the horse would be better suited from a closer alley and ridden closer to the lead.
