GENERAL

As L. Dittman was indisposed, riding changes were made as per the Stewards' Summary Sheet.

Race 1: KBW Community Management Class 3 Plate – 1600m

MISS INTERIORS – Connections advised it would be positioned in the first half of the field. The horse was ridden accordingly. Stewards questioned jockey B. El-Issa regarding the tactics adopted and as to whether he felt the leader was allowed to establish too large a margin in the middle stages. Jockey El-Issa indicated that he was surprised during the early and middle stages at the pace that was set by T. Williams on SAMBUCA SHOT and added that his horse was not travelling comfortably however felt the leader would weaken in the straight. He advised stewards he did not become concerned with the lead established by the leader until entering the home straight, and also added that, in his opinion, the way his mount was travelling he would not have been able to improve his position in the middle stages had he felt it necessary.

STAR FORMATION – Examined by the veterinary surgeon prior to the start and cleared to race. Slow to begin.

RECKLESS ABANDON – When questioned regarding the performance and tactics adopted, jockey A. Allen indicated that in the early stages he was content to allow MADE TO ORDER to cross his mount as he felt he would receive a nice trail behind the lead. He indicated that during the middle stages he was of the view that the pace which was being set by the leader SAMBUCA SHOT was too fast and that the horse would weaken over the final 400m. He added that he was able to pressure his mount into the race after leaving the 600m as he would have liked, however the leader did not weaken as anticipated. He felt RECKLESS ABANDON finished the race off well.

MADE TO ORDER – Stewards questioned rider C. Whiteley regarding his tactics and as to whether he could have pressured his mount in order to improve its position closer to the leader during the middle stages. He stated that after obtaining a position on the fence he called to jockey El-Issa, rider of MISS INTERIORS, near the 1200m when it appeared he was going to cross him when not quite clear. As a result of his call, jockey El-Issa quickened the tempo and he permitted jockey El-Issa to cross shortly afterwards. He felt that the pace being set by the leader was fast and he was of the view the horse would weaken over the final 400m, however approaching the 600m he became concerned with the margin established by the leader and he commenced to pressure his mount from the 600m. He added that his horse did not respond well to his riding and the performance was only average. Stewards noted his explanation.

Race 2: Bridges Financial Services Maiden Plate – 1600m

CAPTAIN KITTINGER – Rider M. Gray was reprimanded for overly restraining his mount and steadying the pace approaching the 1200m, causing interference to runners which were following.

GEE TWENTY – Inconvenienced at the start and had to be steadied. Inconvenienced by another runner approaching the 300m. When asked to comment on the performance, rider S. Eilbeck indicated she would have liked to have positioned the horse closer to the lead, however after receiving interference at the start was obliged to steady and take up a position towards the rear of the field. ELEMENTAL BOY – Overraced in the early and middle stages.

STAR OF NIGHT – Overraced when attempting to secure cover in the early stages. Rider K. Masuda was asked to comment on the performance. He advised that from the wide alley he had been instructed to take up a position at the tail of the field with cover. He was able to fulfil these instructions and was asked to position the horse wider on the track to obtain an uninterrupted run to the finish. He added the filly responded well from passing the 400m and was doing its best work over the final 200m. He further added that STAR OF NIGHT would be better suited to races over 1300m and 1400m.

LORD JUSTICE – Raced 3 wide without cover for the majority of the race.

I’M O’REILLY – Slow to begin. Raced greenly under pressure in the home straight.

FRISCOS SHADOW – Became awkward when bumped by another runner passing the 400m.

DEB’S SPIRIT – Made contact with another runner in securing clear running passing the 400m. When asked to comment on the seemingly improved performance, trainer T. Miller indicated that the horse had been caught wide at its 2 most recent starts and was of the view that jockey C. Whitely being able to position DEB’S SPIRIT on the fence from the wide alley was of substantial benefit to the horse’s chances today and, in his view, was the difference in the performance.

TIBURON – Held up passing the 400m before shifting out to secure clear running passing the 300m.

CRUSADER KING – Fractious in the barriers and became momentarily cast. The gelding was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.

PURE INTELLIGENCE – Began very awkwardly and lost ground. When asked to comment on the performance, jockey K. Wharton stated that the horse jumped away awkwardly and was positioned at the tail of the field, and whilst he had not been issued instructions, he had anticipated setting more forward. He added that when placed under pressure rounding the home turn and in the home straight the horse carried its head very high and raced greenly and shifted both in and out. He added that, in his view, the horse would benefit from the step up in distance and had recommended to connections to experiment with the addition of either blinkers or winkers.

NO MAGIC NEEDED – Slow to begin and was further hampered shortly after the start by another runner and lost ground. When asked to comment on the performance rider C. Schmidt indicated she had been asked to ride the horse quietly in the early stages as it was having its first start back from a spell. She added she was obliged to race further back than anticipated after receiving pressure from another runner at the start. Jockey Schmidt further stated that she rode the horse forward from the 500m and was obliged to alter course back to the inside in order to secure clear running near the 200m, and that approaching the 100m was obliged to steady when placed in restricted room by another runner. Eilbeck, was advised to exercise more care.

He added that he was forced wider passing the 700m. Stewards questioned jockey Pengelly regarding his vigour on the horse in the early stages of the home straight. He indicated he wished to have the horse balanced before overly pressuring his mount, which he felt he did so leaving the 300m.
