NOZAWA – After being slightly inconvenienced near the 800m by another runner, then raced wide without cover.

MONO GIRL – Raced wide without cover.

TACTICIAN – Raced wide for the majority of the race. When asked to comment on the performance, apprentice J. Orman indicated he had been instructed to attempt to take up a trailing position behind the leaders, however from the wide alley and the horse having its first start in blinkers, he was unable to do so and was caught wide. He added that his mount raced greenly and despite this finished the race off well and was doing its best work over the concluding stages.

SUGAR DOLL – A post race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be short striding in front, and had lost its near hind plate in running. Trainer K. Goldman advised stewards he would report back to stewards the findings of veterinary surgeon after the horse returns to its stables.

Race 2: XXXX Gold Australian Pale Ale Maiden H'cap – 1200m

MUSHIN – Obliged to take hold by its rider over the concluding stages when tightened for room.

MUSHROOM TREATMENT – Raced wide. Stewards questioned jockey J. Byrne and trainer R. Stephenson regarding the tactics adopted in today’s event as jockey Byrne restrained the horse out of the barriers, which was in contrast to the horse’s established racing pattern. Jockey Byrne indicated he had been instructed to attempt to ride the horse with cover as the gelding had not been finishing its races off when ridden on speed. Mr Richardson confirmed the instructions, adding that as the horse had had a throat operation prior to its last start, he felt the horse may be better served in being permitted to settle in its races. After considering what had been said, stewards advised Mr Stephenson that he was in breach of AR135A in that he failed to notify stewards of the change in tactics, and issued Mr Stephenson with a reprimand. Stewards also reprimanded Mr Stephenson under AR140(a) as he had failed to notify stewards that MUSHROOM TREATMENT hand undergone a throat operation. Mr Stephenson further reported that following today’s event he would be retiring the gelding from racing. Stewards advised Mr Stephenson that should circumstances change the gelding would be required to trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.

Race 3: Yalumba F&M Class 3 H'cap – 1200m

CROOKED STICK – Jumped away awkwardly and lost ground. Jockey J. Byrne was asked to comment on the performance. He indicted after beginning poorly he was obliged to take up a position at the tail of the field, which was further back than he would have liked. He added that his mount was doing its best work over the concluding stages and would appreciate a step up in distance to 1400m.

QUATTRO PASSI – Raced wide and overraced and had to be restrained from heels after passing the 900m and until the 700m. Stewards questioned apprentice S. Payne regarding his riding of the horse. He indicated his only instruction had been not to have the horse too far away from the leaders. He advised stewards that when the horse only began fairly he elected not to pressure his mount as he felt he would not be able to obtain a forward position without overly pressuring the horse. He added that with hindsight he would have been better served if he had placed more pressure on the horse in the early stages. He indicated when racing behind other horses the mare did not settle, overraced badly passing the 800m and hung out throughout. Stewards also questioned stable representative J. Britton who confirmed the instructions and indicated that the stable was not entirely satisfied with the ride of apprentice Payne, however were quite disappointed with the horse’s overall performance. Stewards advised apprentice Payne that, in their opinion, he had erred during the early stages in failing to attempt to fulfil the instructions issued and whilst they were of the view that this had some effect on the horse’s performance they could not be satisfied to the requisite standard that it had affected the performance significantly. Mr Britton was advised that in light of the horse’s overall performance and racing manners QUATTRO PASSI would be required to official trial prior to its next race start. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

SAGACIOUS FLAME – Raced wide without cover.

Race 4: Go Transit Media Group Maiden Plate – 1600m

FIFTEEN LOVE – Improved onto heels when the pace slackened near the 1300m and had to be checked and was then ridden forward to the lead at a point passing the 900m. Apprentice B. Grylls, rider of SEE CRUISE, was advised to exercise more care when steadying the pace in similar circumstances.

MURTA CAPE – Raced 3 wide without cover.

PER MILLE – Apprentice R. Jamieson reported that she was unable to secure clear running entering the home straight and was disappointed for a run after passing the 400m and as the horse does not sprint quickly, she felt this was significantly detrimental to the horse’s performance and was of the opinion the gelding would benefit from being stepped up to 2000 metres.

Race 6: Pryde’s Easifeed C G&E Class 3 H'cap – 1200m

NARSENS DUKE – Had to be steadied from heels near the 900m.

THE BURGLAR – Apprentice R. Payne reported to stewards that her mount travelled well coming to the home turn, however when placed under pressure shortly after straightening failed to respond to her riding and weakened badly over the concluding stages. She added the horse was making an abnormal respiratory noise on pulling up. A post race veterinary examination confirmed the presence of this noise, and trainer M. Mair was advised he must have the horse undergo an endoscopic examination and report the findings to stewards before its next race start.

Race 7: Sea Vista Developments Class H'cap – 1300m

PICTURE IT – As J. Byrne was to be overweight, R. Fradd was substituted as the rider of the horse. J. Byrne was reprimanded.

BASHAN – Change of tactics. Connections advised that the horse would be ridden further back in the field than its most recent starts due to drawing an awkward alley.

CEE THE DRAGON – Jockey K. Wharton reported that the horse raced very flat and weakened badly in the straight, and recommended to connections to send the horse for a spell. Trainer S. Mackinnon confirmed he would be sending the gelding for a spell.

SUBSTATION – Stewards questioned jockey N. Day as to whether when passing the 600m he had opportunity to improve outside the eventual winner BECKHAM in an attempt to hold that horse in a position on the fence. He indicated he had attempted to do so however the opportunity was open to him for only a short period and when he attempted to improve shortly after, BECKHAM shifted out forcing his mount into a position 4 wide, and he therefore elected to steady and shift back to the inside in an attempt to improve into the race. After viewing the patrol footage, stewards accepted the explanation tendered.

Race 8: Access Insulation Ratings Band 0-70 H'cap – 1400m

HOW CAN I HELP – Raced 3 wide without cover.
