SPIRIT OF THE DAWN – Slow to begin. Improved on to heels after passing the 600m and had to be restrained until approaching the 400m.

Race 3: SCHWEPPES CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1200M

EGIPTIENNE – A warning was placed on the horse’s pre-race manners.

MANKINI LOVE – Stewards questioned apprentice L. Tarrant regarding his riding of the horse, in particular his reason for riding forward when the horse has not been ridden in a forward position in its recent starts, and also remaining away from the fence where it appeared he had opportunity to cross to the fence after passing the 850m. Apprentice Tarrant indicated that in his view the track closest to the fence was more rain-affected and therefore wished to ensure that he had opportunity to race away from the fence and shift wider when entering the home straight. He added that the tactics adopted in today’s event have been in accordance with the same instructions given at the last three starts, however as the horse has not begun well on those occasions it has been positioned further back in the field. Stewards noted the explanation.

LIMERICK MOON – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be suffering from heat stress.

ROSE OF WOORIM – Slow to begin. J. Byrne reported that the horse did not travel comfortably at any stage and in the home straight felt awkward in its action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings and a swab sample was taken. Trainer S. Kendrick indicated that he was have a blood sample taken from the horse and added that in his view the horse was showing signs of perhaps being in season.

ON THE DECK – Slow to begin. Commenced to overrace when the pace slackened after passing the 1000m and was obliged to steady from heels passing the 900m. Apprentice R. Johnston-Bell was fined $100 for using the whip in a forehand manner more than 5 times prior to the 100m.

NEARCTIC CHILLER – Slow to begin. Stewards asked apprentice L. Tarrant to explain the tactics adopted as after passing the 900m he shifted wider on the track and from the tail of the field improved quickly when positioned three wide to take up the lead passing the 600m. Apprentice Tarrant indicated that it had not been his pre-race intentions, however after settling, his mount commenced to overrace when the pace slackened at that point and after shifting wider to avoid heels, he was of the view that it would be in his best interests to position the horse closer to the lead. Stewards noted his explanation and took no further action.

MYSTERIUM – Overraced and had a tendency to lay away from the fence after passing the 800m.

ZOU DER ZEE – Raced greenly and shifted out for a short distance passing the 800m before racing three wide without cover.

D’LEEAJET – When asked to comment on the horse’s performance, apprentice R. Johnston-Bell indicated that from the wide alley he was obliged to position the horse further back in the field than he would have liked, He added that the horse would appreciate a step up in distance where it could obtain a position closer to the lead.
