GENERAL

As R. Fradd and M. McDonald were indisposed due to injury, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: FRMS CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1200M

VICTORY EIGHT – Laid in under pressure in the home straight and made contact with the running rail near the 50m.

CAPO DI TUTTI – Slow to begin and despite the efforts of L. Cassidy in attempting to secure cover in the early stages was unable to do so and the gelding commenced to overrace near the 1000m and was then permitted to stride forward and obtained the lead passing the 700m.

Race 2: ALEX SURF CLUB MAIDEN H’CAP – 1400M

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow the trainer (B. Herne) and rider (N. Seymour) of MURTASTEEL to view the stewards’ footage of the start of the race.

LITTLE NATIVE – Trainer L. Elliott was fined $200 for failing to effect a gear change of blinkers on by the prescribed time.

MURTASTEEL – Slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding had cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer B. Herne was advised that the horse must officially trial and that he will be required to produce a veterinary clearance and the results of an ECG for the horse prior to it being permitted to race again. Mr Herne advised stewards that the horse would be sent for a brief spell.

CZARIST – Lost the near hind plate in running.

DUKE OF MOOLOO – Trainer T. Bourke advised stewards that the horse had pulled up lame in both forelegs and he indicated that after discussions with connections the horse would now be retired from racing.

LADY LIMELIGHT – J. Lloyd indicated that he was disappointed in the horse’s performance. He stated that he was forced to ride the horse along in the early stages as the horse did not show its customary early speed. He further indicated that he did not believe that the mare was entirely comfortable in the rain-affected conditions. He added that he shifted out rounding the home turn to avoid the heels of the weakening DUKE OF MOOLOO and despite being afforded clear running in the home straight the mare did not respond to his riding. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer B. Ahrens’ stable representative indicated that the stable would have veterinary tests and an endoscopic examination performed on the horse subsequent to today’s event, the results of which would be forwarded to stewards.

GRUINARD BAY – Raced wide throughout without cover.

Race 3: CREATIVE STONE CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1600M

NERO D’AVOLA – B. Pengelly reported that the gelding travelled well throughout and when he applied pressure from the 600m the horse failed to respond and proved disappointing. Trainer C. Anderson stated that he did not think the track conditions suited the horse and he would continue with its current preparation and would advise stewards should anything come to light in coming days which may have had an effect on the performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

ELUSIVE ELEMENT – Slow to begin. Laid out under pressure in the home straight.

RED SAGA – The veterinary surgeon reported that the mare had a nasal discharge post-race. Trainer M. Renehan was advised that he will be required to produce a veterinary clearance and the results of an endoscopic examination for the horse prior to it racing again. Mr Renehan indicated that the horse would now be sent for a spell.

TUMBLING AL – Overraced from the 1300m until having to be checked from heels near the 900m.

Race 4: MAROOCHYDORE ROOS AUST RULES FOOTBALL CLUB MAIDEN PLATE – 1000M

FIDEREUS – Raced in restricted room for a short distance passing the 700m.

JET SUKI – Slow to begin. Had difficulty securing clear running in the early stages of the home straight.

SWISS MADEMOISELLE – Jumped away awkwardly, made heavy contact with the barrier partition and lost ground.

BEERINAWINEGLASS – Stewards asked jockey L. Cassidy to comment on the filly’s overall performance. He indicated that the horse was unable to muster sufficient speed in the early stages and he was obliged to pressure the horse throughout in order to hold its position. He added that the horse was doing its best work over the concluding stages and would be better served stepping up in distance when able to secure a position closer to the speed.

DONOSTIA STAR – Hung out and raced wide for the majority of the event.

FATAL RENDEZVOUS – Jumped awkwardly, made contact with the barrier partition and as a result lost ground, and was then ridden aggressively and at a point near the 900m had to be checked to avoid heels and shifted wider on the track and then raced wide without cover. Steadied from heels approaching the 300m.

GREY NADA – Taken wider on the track by another runner near the 300m.

LOVE BITES – Slow to begin.

Race 5: SALONSHOP QTIS 3YO MAIDEN H’CAP – 1400M

The start of this race was delayed when YOU ANGEL YOU broke through the front of the barriers, was quickly restrained, returned to the barriers, underwent a veterinary inspection and cleared to race.

MARK MY WORD – D. Browne said that he attempted to secure cover in 5th or 6th position and when unable to do so he was obliged to allow the horse to stride forward to a position outside the lead closer to the rail near the 600m. He added that in his opinion, whilst this had some bearing on the horse’s performance, he felt that the horse did not race comfortably in the rain-affected conditions as when placed under full pressure it failed to respond.

HUMPHREY NO PANTS – Slow to begin.

YOU ANGEL YOU – After being steadied to allow VANILLA JEWEL (J. Lloyd) to cross near the 900m to obtain cover, the horse was then obliged to steady from that runner’s heels and lost ground when J. Lloyd steadied the pace. J. Lloyd was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances when steadying the pace.

SINISTER PRINCESS – Jumped away awkwardly, causing its rider to be unbalanced for a short distance. Had some difficulty securing clear running for a short distance passing the 500m.

Race 6: IN CURTAINS BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 1600M

STAROCITY – Slow to begin. When questioned regarding the tactics he adopted, J. Byrne advised stewards that he had envisaged being in a midfield position, however after being slow to begin, shifted across and obtained a position one off the fence trailing SURFACE TENSION. He added that when the pace slackened near the 1200m he was obliged to steady from heels and the horse overraced and shifted wider on the track. He indicated that he was unable to then obtain cover until SHOTACROSS THE BOW shifted wider near the 800m, which afforded him a trail and opportunity to improve into the event. He stated that he attempted to improve outside that horse after passing the 400m, however the gelding did not quicken as anticipated and he therefore shifted back to the inside and in his view the horse was disappointing in the run to the line, which he attributed to the horse overracing in the early and middle stages, adding that the pace of the race did not suit when he was positioned in the second half of the field. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have mild heat stress. Trainer T. Edmonds was advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

RISING LUCK – Slow to begin.

Race 7: DRUMMO CLASS 3 H’CAP – 1200M

SAINTLY LAD – Slow to begin.

TONI MAY – Slow to begin. Had some difficulty securing clear running in the early stages of the home straight.

FINE FERGUS – Raced wide throughout.

KAPGUN – Raced very wide in the early stages before being ridden forward to secure the lead passing the 700m.

NILETTE – Raced wide without cover.

LIBELULA – Raced wide without cover.

I CAN’T SEE WHO – Unable to secure clear running rounding the home turn and in the home straight until passing the 200m.

Race 8: TKM BUILDING GROUP CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1400M

PUNISHING – D. Browne was asked to comment on the horse’s performance. He stated that the horse jumped very awkwardly and made heavy contact with the barrier partition and as a result was positioned at the tail of the field. He added that when attempting to improve into the race from the 600m the horse did not quicken and in his view did not travel comfortably at any stage of the race and was extremely disappointing over the concluding stages. Trainer L. Birchley’s representative, Mr Balderson, was unable to offer any explanation for the performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be exhibiting an upper respiratory noise. Mr Balderson was advised that prior to starting again the horse must trial competitively and the results of an endoscopic examination must be produced to stewards.

KAHNEMAN – Overraced badly when leading until after passing the 600m.

PORTSEA – Had some difficulty securing clear running rounding the home turn.

HIDDEN GOLD – Inconvenienced rounding the home turn and then had to be steadied from heels near the 400m and had some difficulty securing clear running until the 300m.

KERMANDIE STAR – Slow to begin.
