Swab Attendants – A. Challen, G. Gray

GENERAL

Stewards accepted T. Harrison’s explanation for being unable to fulfil her engagements in Races 1 and 3. Apprentice C. Jokic was indisposed due to illness. Riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

G. Colless pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 83(a) in that following the running of Race 7 he did misconduct himself upon returning to the scales area by instigating a verbal altercation with apprentice M. McGillivray which culminated in apprentice McGillivray being physically pushed by jockey Colless in the jockeys’ room. After taking into account jockey Colless’s prior good record in relation to this rule, stewards imposed a fine of $400.

Race 1: NUMBER ONE QUALITY HOMES MAIDEN H’CAP – 1600m

WHISKEY APPLE – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

ONE MAN GRAND – Lost the near fore plate in running.

CINZIA – Rider J. Byrne reported that the horse did not travel comfortably throughout the event and indicated that the horse was holding its breath at various stages of the event. He added that he had concerns throughout in relation to the horse’s breathing. He also advised that he recommended to connections to restrict the horse’s races to distances up to 1400m. On post-race veterinary examination the horse was found to have blood in its mouth. Trainer S. Kendrick confirmed that the horse would be sent for a spell.

NATIONAL JEWEL – Raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.

ROSEBERY AFFAIR – Overraced in the early stages.

Race 2: COASTLINE BMW CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1400m

ZOFF OF THE WORLD – B. Grylls was asked to comment on the below market expectation performance of the gelding. She indicated that the horse was very fresh today and became very agitated prior to the race, which she believed had a detrimental effect on the horse’s performance. She also stated that the horse hung out from after the 1000m when in an awkward position to the inside of MADAM SUPPER CLUB. She added that the horse continued to race greenly and hung out until entering the home straight and was then inclined to lay out under pressure. Trainer J. Meagher was also interviewed. He indicated that consideration would be given to placing the blinkers back on the horse for its next start and agreed with Ms Grylls in her assessment that the horse was somewhat fresh in today’s event. Stewards advised Mr Meagher that a warning would be placed on the gelding’s manners in relation to today’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

MADAM SUPPER CLUB – J. Lloyd was questioned regarding his tactics. Of particular concern to stewards was his option to restrain in the early stages when an opportunity appeared to be available to settle outside the lead. He indicated that he wished to obtain cover as the horse was stepping up for the first time from 1000m to 1400m, and after attempting to secure a position behind the leader he was unable to do so when ZOFF OF THE WORLD improved to his inside. He then became aware that MEHMETO had commenced to improve to his outside and saw an opportunity to take up a trailing position behind that runner, which he did passing the 800m. Stewards also questioned jockey Lloyd regarding an opportunity to improve to the inside of MEHMETO approaching the 600m. Jockey Lloyd advised that he elected not to take this option as he felt he may be held up behind the leader as he envisaged MEHMETO would continue to improve forward outside GRUOSI, which was the leader. He said he was somewhat surprised when MEHMETO lost ground near the 600m, causing him to be further back than he would have liked. Stewards noted the explanation provided by jockey Lloyd.

REJUVENATE – Slow to begin.

Race 3: TROY TREVITT HOMES MAIDEN H’CAP – 1200m

The start of this race was delayed when STATE OF TEXAS was reluctant to proceed to the barriers. A warning was placed on the horse for its reluctance to proceed to the barriers.

MILITARY STRIKER – Apprentice S. Lacy reported at scale that her mount raced greenly throughout the event.

SURGE BLANCO – Obliged to steady from heels near the 800m, shifted wider on the track to avoid those heels. Andrew Spinks, the rider of ELITE FORCE, was reprimanded for shifting in when insufficiently clear.

ULTIMATE REALITY – Overraced when being restrained to obtain cover in the early stages.

PRINCE SILENCE – Slow to begin.

LA MASCARA – Forced wider at the 800m and raced three wide without cover.

ACE STRYKER – Began awkwardly and lost ground.

Race 4: STANLEY RIVER THOROUGHBREDS BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 1000m

LIPSYNC was a late scratching at 1:52 pm on veterinary advice. On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on LIPSYNC be refunded. As the scratching occurred prior to the commencement of betting, no deductions were applicable.

TRUE PASSION – Tightened for room shortly after the start.

GRACIDA – J. Lloyd pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that after shifting in at the start he continued to ride his mount with vigour out of the barriers, taking SEQ THE STAR inwards, which resulted in tightening to runners directly to the inside, being START DREAMIN and TRUE PASSION, which resulted in START DREAMIN having to be checked and ASHGROVIAN, which was to the inside of TRUE PASSION, being tightened for room. Jockey Lloyd’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 9 days, to commence at midnight on Sunday 6 August 2017, being the expiration of a penalty incurred on 22 July 2017, and to expire at midnight on Tuesday 15 August 2017.

OUR FIRE AND ICE – Shortly after the start the cap came off the helmet of jockey J. Lloyd. This displaced jockey Lloyd’s goggles and as a result when racing behind other runners leaving the 700m, jockey Lloyd’s vision was impaired due to the kickback. He then attempted to adjust his goggles, which he was unable to do until approaching the 500m, which had an effect on his mount’s position as the filly lost ground during that period.

PRINCESS RACER – Tightened for room and had to be checked at the start.

TIPSY – Jumped away awkwardly. Laid out in the middle stages.

Race 6: ALFIE'S MOOO CHAR & BAR CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1000m

Thomas was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse’s barrier manners. On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on KING DRABADORE be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to 3:39 pm:

0 cents in the dollar for the win #1
2 cents in the dollar for place of winner #1
4 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #7
4 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #10

DOT PAINTING – Had some difficulty securing clear running in the home straight.

AMERIDON – M. Cahill was fined $200 for using the whip 9 times prior to the 100m. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account the totality of jockey Cahill’s whip use.

PINSTRYKE – Apprentice T. Brooker reported that her mount did not muster sufficient speed in the early stages to cross runners to its inside and as a result was caught wide. She added that after crossing behind runners near the 600m the horse did not race comfortably and failed to finish the race off.

CANTON ROAD – Significantly slow to begin.

NUG’S POCKET – Raced wide without cover.

Race 7: NURTURE FINANCIAL GROUP CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1200m

KULABA – After taking evidence from apprentice S. Lacy and trainer and master J. Symons and viewing the videos, apprentice S. Lacy was charged under AR. 135(b) for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures when riding the gelding in that at a point near the 400m when TYCOON TYKE had improved forward of her mount, when an opportunity presented itself, she failed to pressure her mount to improve into the race and failed to make sufficient effort until after the 300m to pressure her mount into the race. And further that after passing the 200m she again ceased riding her mount along and used insufficient vigour from that point to the winning post to ensure that her mount was given full opportunity to win or be placed in the best possible position in the event. After hearing submissions, apprentice Lacy was found guilty of the charge as laid. Apprentice Lacy’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 4 weeks, to commence at midnight on Sunday 30 July and expire at midnight on Sunday 27 August 2017.
