Race 3: Iron Jack QTUS 3yo Plate – 1400m

GRINCH – Apprentice A. Sewell was asked to explain the tactics he adopted in the early stages when he attempted to restrain his mount when overracing outside the lead. He was asked why he did not permit his mount to stride forward to cross SAINT PATRICKS DAY. He indicated that whilst the horse has led previously, he had been instructed, in today’s race to attempt to obtain cover as it was having its first start over 1400m. He indicated with hindsight the manner in which the horse was overracing did have an effect on the overall performance when he may have been better served allowing the gelding to stride forward. However, in any case, he felt the horse would have struggled to run out the 1400m given the manner in which it weakened over the concluding stages. Stewards noted the explanation.

Following this event the track rating was upgraded to Soft 6.

Race 4: XXXX Gold QTIS 2yo Maiden Plate – 1000m

BIG ARJAY – Jockey J. Orman advised that he was slowly away and his mount was inclined to lay in in the straight. Raced wide throughout.

SMARTY JACK – Raced greenly in the home straight.

FULL DIAMOND – Raced 5 wide without cover. When asked to explain the tactics employed on the horse, jockey R. Stewart indicated he had been instructed from the wide barrier to attempt to obtain cover. He stated that when steading his mount in the early stages the gelding commenced to overrace and he was unable to obtain a position closer to the fence with cover. He added that near the 800m, after overracing, he elected to try to improve to the lead, however the horse then did not have sufficient pace to improve around the horses to his inside. Jockey Stewart indicated in hindsight he would have been better served riding forward to the lead in the early stages of the event.

APPRECIATED – Jockey J. Byrne reported his mount did not travel comfortably at any stage during the event.

GOLD SUN – Lost its near fore plate in running.

Race 6: XXXX Bitter CG&E Benchmark 62 H’cap – 1200m

SAIL THE STARS – Slow to begin.

PINCH MOUNTAIN – Raced 3 wide without cover.

TYCOON TYKE – When questioned regarding his reason for not crossing to the lead when it appeared he had opportunity to do so near the 800m, jockey R. Wiggins indicated his horse struggles to run out a strong 1200m, he attempted to take hold approaching the 800m when it appeared he would cross to the lead easily without being further pressured. He indicated at this point the horse commenced to make an abnormal respiratory noise and started laying out. He indicated this made it difficult to shift in to cross SCALLOPINI and as a result he was obliged to race one off the fence as the horse continued to lay out until entering the home straight. A post race veterinary examination confirmed the horse had made a respiratory noise during the event. Stewards ordered that an endoscopic examination be performed, the results of which to be provided to stewards.

Following this event the track rating was upgraded to Soft 5.

Race 7: Hahn Super Dry 3.5 Class 1 H’cap – 1600m

DIVISIONAL – When the pace slackened near the 1000m commenced to overrace and shifted wider on the track. Stewards questioned jockey G. Colless as to his reasons for when overracing in the middle stages not continuing to race forward to the lead after obtaining a positon outside the lead. He indicated the horse’s racing pattern has been to race with cover and if at all possible he wished to remain in a position with cover. Stewards noted the explanation.

ROYAL RECEIVER – When the pace slackened in the middle stages commenced to overrace and as a consequence shifted wider on the track and was ridden forward to assume the lead passing the 700m.

BIDZILL – Forced 3 wide near the 1000m and race wide without cover from that point onwards.

HAND OF FAITH – When questioned regarding the pace, which was steady when he was leading during the middle stages of the event, apprentice J. Murphy indicated that the horse had shown good gate speed, however after obtaining the lead comfortably the horse dropped the bit and was reluctant to race. He indicated he did not want to the horse to overrace so he did not place significant pressure on the horse. He was aware when the pace was only steady in the middle stages, and when challenged for the lead again passing the 700m showed a keenness to race and improve. Stewards after reviewing the film confirmed the explanation.

Race 8: XXXX Gold Class 2 H’cap – 1400m

Race 9: The Gorgeous Benchmark 75 H’cap – 1600m

SHIELD WALL – Change of tactics. Connections advised that the horse will not be ridden aggressively out of the barriers in order to take up a position midfield or worse.
