Smith advised that his mount, after being moderately away, did not travel at any stage of the event and when placed under pressure rounding the home turn, failed to respond to his riding in the home straight and proved disappointing. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 2: Sonder Espresso Maiden Pate – 1400m

CONISTON SUNRISE – Connections advised that the horse would be ridden back in the field if circumstances permit. The mare was ridden accordingly. After being caught wide in the early stages, commenced to overrace when being restrained to take up a position at the rear of the field. Had a tendency to lay in over the final 100m, causing jockey B. Stewart to stop riding. Jockey B. Stewart was fined $200 for using his whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m. In determining penalty, stewards took into account jockey Stewart’s good recent record regarding breaches of this rule and that this event was a staying race.

ELVISON – Overraced in the early and middle stages.

SIR CASS – Approaching the 1200m after being crossed by INFINITE REIGN, shifted out in an attempt to improve forward to regained the lead passing the 1000m.

SONA DANCER - A post race veterinary examination of the horse, which raced in a handy position and weakened over the final stages and proved disappointing, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. When questioned regarding the performance of the filly, rider T. Harrison explained that from the wide barrier today she had to apply a little more pressure in the early stages to obtain the lead than she would have liked, and during the race was slightly pressured by a runner to her outside. She further added that at its last start the filly obtained a soft lead on a tighter track without being pressured, which may have been to its advantage, and with the step up in grade today on the bigger track may have had some impact on its finishing performance today.
