GENERAL
 
UNDER THE CAP was declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 4:49pm after the horse was displaying a high temperature. Trainer S Kendrick was advised UNDER THE CAP would require a veterinary clearance prior to its next race start.
 
 
Race 1: TAB Maiden Handicap 1000 metres
 
ZOOCUPOLA – Began awkwardly.Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
OUR ROCKETMAN – Approaching the 300m bumped and forced wider when ZOOCUPOLA was taken out by LAGUNA DE CHICABEL.
 
COUNTER COMMAND – Passing the 100m disappointed for a run between MISS TEFE and LAGUNA DE CHICABEL and went to line without being fully tested by its rider.
 
DAULAT TAMAKAHGAO – Slow to begin. Became awkward in its action over the concluding stages when weakening.
 
ROCK LOBSTER – Slow to begin. Laid in under pressure in the home straight resulting in rider B Thompson being unable to fully test the horse over the concluding stages.
 
BAMBOLEO – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
LAGUNA DE CHICABEL – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
 
 
Race 2: WISHLIST RATINGS BAND 0 - 58 Handicap 1200 metres
 
ZOUVALU – Rider B Thompson reported after being obliged to work hard in the early stages from a wide barrier to secure a forward position, this effort had an adverse effect on the horse’s finishing effort over the concluding stages of the event.
 
CAPITAL GIRL – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
 
PRETTY FLASH – Jumped in at the start and bumped CLAUDIUS. Raced greenly at various stages of the event.
 
CLAUDIUS – Bumped at the start and lost ground. Over-raced in the middle stages of the event. Had some difficulty securing clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
 
KALLIE – Approaching the 800m was restrained to avoid the heels of SMASHINGPLATES when not fully clear. T Brooker, rider of SMASHING PLATES, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
 
 
 
Race 3: THE COMPASS INSTITUTE Class 1 Plate 1400 metres
 
APATAKI – Slow to begin.
 
BURLESY – Checked and lost ground when crowded between runners at the start.
 
STREET FIGHTER – Raced wide throughout the event. Leaving the 400m momentarily steadied from the heels of EASIER SAID which shifted out to improve.
 
WINSTON SMURFHILL – Jumped out at the start.
 
WIZARD OF VISP – Crowded at the start when WINSTON SMURFHILL jumped out.
 
BLUE SMARTIE – Checked and lost ground when crowded between runners at the start.
 
BONNIE AND CLYDE – Jumped in at the start.
 
EASIER SAID – G Cartwright, rider of EASIER SAID, was reprimanded under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for use of the whip on 6 occasions prior to 100m, one more than permitted.
 
 
 
Race 4: HOT 91 BENCHMARK 68 Handicap 1800 metres
 
ELEUTHERA – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
VANDANGLE – After being caught wide in the early stages of the event was permitted to stride forward and race outside the leader from the 1200m. Rider R Maloney reported despite the horse being obliged to work hard in the early stages of the event after being caught wide and over-racing after settling outside the leader, he was disappointed with the overall performance of VANDANGLE.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer J Bruce advised he would consider spelling VANDANGLE, and it would be his intention to trial the horse prior to its next race start, adding that he would report back any condition which may come light in the coming days.
 
SOKUDO – Momentarily held up and unable to improve near the 500 metres. Held up for clear running between the 300m until a point passing the 100m.
 
SCILAGO – Slow to begin.
 
 
 
Race 5: THE PUMP HOUSE BENCHMARK 58 Handicap 1600 metres
 
CRACK OF DOOM – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
NATALIEANN – Tightened for room approaching the 500m and had to be checked when SHE”S ENUFF whist over-racing at heels, shifted out.
 
SHE'S ENUFF – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Over-raced and raced ungenerously in the early stages, and as a result near the 1400m shifted in and inconvenienced BOLD DELAGO. When over-racing became awkwardly placed at heels near the 700m before near the 600m shifting out despite the efforts of its rider and hampering NATILIEANN. Trainer L Birchley was advised a warning would be placed on the racing manners of NATALIANN. Mr Birchley advised Stewards he would now look to experiment with gear changes going forward.
 
BOLD DELAGO – From the wide barrier was restrained at the start and shifted across behind runners to obtain a position closer to the rails. Near the 1400m inconvenienced. Over-raced at heels for some distance passing the 700m. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn. M Castle, rider of BOLD DELAGO, was fined $500 under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for use of the whip on 6 occasions prior to 100m, one more than permitted. In assessing penalty Stewards considered Ms Castles’ recent poor record under this rule.
 
MILLENIUM JEWEL – Obliged to steady passing the 100m when VIVENZO shifted in under riding when not fully clear. L Allen, rider of VIVENZO, was reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding in this incident.
 
 
Race 6: HAMPERS TO GO OPEN Handicap 1600 metres
 
GAVE US UP – Slow to begin. Rider M Castle reported after being slow to begin the horse did not travel at any stage of the event and was disappointing.
 
STAR OF MICHELIN – Slow to begin.
 
SCARLET TUFTY – Began awkwardly.

RED LIGHT ROXANNE – N Berriman, rider of RED LIGHT ROXANNE, was reprimanded under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for use of the whip on 7 occasions prior to 100m, two more than permitted.
 
RED BLOOM – K Wilson-Taylor, rider of second placegetter RED BLOOM, pleaded guilty to a charge under AR211(1) for returning to scale in excess of half a kilogram overweight and was fined $1000.In assessing penalty Stewards considered the half neck margin between first and second.  
 
 
Race 7: MARTIN COLLINS AUSTRALIA QTIS Three-Year-Old BENCHMARK 62 Handicap 1600 metres
 
The start of this event was delayed approximately 5 minutes to allow farrier attention to TANTALUM.
 
RED TOP – Caught wide in the early stages before being permitted to stride forward to race outside the leader from the 800m.
 
MISHANI MISSILE – Slow to begin.
 
SHADYVALE STORM – Began awkwardly.
 
BETTER STRINGS – Bumped at the start. Crowded for room and taken in near the 1300m. Checked leaving the 800m after racing in restricted room to the inside SKATER, which after being crossed by RED TOP, then over-raced in close proximity to that runners’ heels and shifted in marginally.
 
TANTALUM – The near fore plate was refitted on arrival at the barriers. Jumped out at the start and bumped BETTER STRINGS. Checked approaching the 1300. At a subsequent inquiry M Savva, rider of SKATER, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR131(a) in that approaching the 1300m she permitted SKATER to shift in when insufficiently clear of BETTER STRINGS which was crowded for room and taken inwards onto the rightful running of TANTALUM which was tightened onto the running rail and had to be checked. The licence of M Savva to ride in races was suspended for a period of 12 days to commence midnight 17th January up to and including midnight 29th January 2023. Over-raced for a short distance near the 1200m.
 
 
Race 8: K SMITH & SON JEWELLERS Class 3 Handicap 1000 metres
 
SITUATION ROOM – Raced wide throughout.
 
APPLE TART – Bumped by BEFANA near the 700m.
 
BEFANA – When the pace of the race eased near the 700m shifted out and bumped APPLE TART.
 
THATFEELSBETTER – Slow to begin. J Lloyd, rider of THATFEELSBETTER, was reprimanded under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for use of the whip on 6 occasions prior to 100m, one more than permitted.
