Race 1: Tropic Distributors/Northern Group/Abbott Memorial Class 4 Handicap 1000 metres:
1st – SHANTUNG BOXER 2nd – HOFFENHORRY 3rd – SPECK OF GOLD 4th – WASHER

I’M DESPERATE TOO – When no other rider was available Stewards permitted jockey A Spradau to ride the gelding 2.5kg over its declared weight. Stood flatfooted and lost considerable ground. Trainer Mr R Burrows was told that prior to racing again the gelding would have to perform satisfactorily in a trial.

WASHER - When no other rider was available Stewards permitted jockey T Chambers to ride the gelding 3.5kg over its declared weight. Raced wide rounding the 700m turn. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils. Trainer Mr K Laffin was advised that as this was the geldings first occurrence it would now incur the mandatory 3 month from racing under AR53A and that prior to racing again it would be required to trial or gallop 1000m in the presence of a Steward.

BEAU DASH – Raced wide throughout.

BROTHER BOB – Raced wide rounding the home turn.

HOFFENHORRY – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be sore in the hind legs. Trainer Mr M Oates was told that prior to racing again a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced.

Stewards considered an objection lodged by K Ballard the rider of second placegetter CAN’T FORGET against WORDS AND PICTURES the declared winner alleging interference near the 400m. On the evidence and after viewing the official patrol films Stewards established that near the 400m WORDS AND PICTURES shifted out and inconvenienced CAN’T FORGET however bearing in mind the minor nature of interference and the manner in which both horses ran to the finish Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that had the interference not occurred CAN’T FORGET would have beaten WORDS AND PICTURES therefore the objection was dismissed.
