Race 2: Glenn Sexton Constructions QTIS 2-Y-O Maiden Handicap - 1000 Metres

LATE CALL – Contacted by another runner at the start.

MIM’S POET – Shortly after the start shifted in and made contact with another runner. Joining the course proper, near the 800 metres, was bumped by another runner. Raced 4 wide without cover throughout.

CRAIGLEA IMPREZA – Raced greenly in the middle stages.

KRACCA JACK GIRL – Raced greenly throughout the early and middle stages, and was reluctant to stretch out.

TYZONE – Over the concluding stages was inclined to lay in under pressure, resulting in Jockey P. Cullen having to stop riding and straighten.

CRAIGLEA GHETTO – When questioned regarding the improved performance, trainer Ms K. Johnston could offer no explanation, other than that following it’s most recent start the gelding received chiropractic treatment.

Race 3: FORKLIFTIT Maiden Handicap - 1400 metres
1st – CORONATION JOURNEY 2nd – ZEDAHEEL 3rd – CORNISH TALES 4th – PURFLEET PRINCESS

PURFLEET PRINCESS – A pre-race veterinary examination revealed that the filly had aggravated an old wound to it’s off side cheek and was passed fit to take its place in the field.

CORONATION JOURNEY – Connections advised stewards that the mare would be ridden back in the field, if circumstances permit. Public announcements were made to that effect and the mare settled back in the field.

Stewards considered an objection lodged by Jockey J. Long, the rider of ZEDAHEEL which finished second, against CORONATION JOURNEY (Jockey S. Wilson) being declared the winner, alleging interference over the final 100 metres. After taking evidence from the parties involved, viewing the patrol videos and acting on their own observations, stewards found passing the 200 metres CORONATION JOURNEY improved from a position behind ZEDAHEEL and at the 100 metres improved past that runner and shifted into the running of ZEDAHEEL however the interference was deemed negligible. Given the minor nature of the interference and the margin of 1 ¾ lengths stewards deemed the protest to be frivolous. Accordingly, the protest was dismissed and the judge’s placings ordered to stand. Jockey J. Long was fined $200 under A.R. 165(3).

TIPSY ROCKET – Slow to begin and shortly after the start was bumped by another runner.

MAKE EVEN – Shortly after the start shifted in and made contact with another runner.

Race 4: Rock Paper Scissors Class 1 Handicap – 1300 metres
1st – RISING KING 2nd – BUSH VERSION 3rd – JUMBO RUMBO 4th – DAMKY

Jockey M. Morris was reprimanded under A.R. 175(k) for being dually engaged on EEJAY STYLE and CANNES CONI. Stewards permitted Apprentice G. Mitchell to replace Jockey Morris as the rider of EEJAY STYLE at midday on Acceptance day. Stewards took into account Jockey Morris’s exemplary record in regard to the rule.

EEJAY STYLE – Shifted in abruptly at the start and made heavy contact with another runner.

CANNES CONI – Bumped heavily at the start.

BIG TOMEE – Slow to begin.

JUMBO RUMBO – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

HIDDEN ABILITY - When questioned regarding the poor performance of the gelding Jockey S. Wilson said that his mount refused to settle throughout the early and middle stages, and was reluctant to race genuinely inside of runners. He added that after obtaining clear running in the straight the gelding failed to respond and was disappointing. He stated that in his opinion HIDDEN ABILITY performs better over shorter journeys. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Jockey S. Wilson’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 1 week, to commence from midnight on Friday, 26th February 2016, for using his whip on 10 occasions prior to the 100 metres 5 more than is permitted under the rule. Stewards took into account Jockey Wilson’s poor record in relation to the rule.

Race 5: Townsville Earthmoving Class 2 Handicap - 1000 metres
1st – GUTZ CI 2nd – CRAIGLEA PISTOL 3rd – BETTR CALL SAUL 4th – BACKTOSPEC

LOVELY WITCH - Which was resuming from a lengthy spell, was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. Trainer C. Hurle was told that a warning will be placed on the record of the mare and should it not improve at its next start it will be placed in barrier trials to prove its competitiveness.

SUSSEX STREET – Blundered shortly after the start.

FORTY NIL MANLY – Crowded for room at the start and shortly after clipped heels and blundered.

ROUND THE CORNER – Raced wide without cover throughout.

PRIMED FOR ACTION – Rounding the home turn was buffeted between WANTABETHEONE and ROUND THE CORNER, which shifted in away from SUSSEX STREET.

WANTABETHEONE – Jockey P. Cullen explained that his mount travelled comfortably throughout, however shortly after straightening when placed under pressure failed to respond and was disappointing.

Apprentice G. Mitchell, the rider of MR MEMPHIS, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that rounding the home turn she allowed her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of BETTER CALL SAUL (Jockey A. Coome), which had to be checked and lost its rightful running. STARMOSA (Jockey M. Morris), which was following, also had to be checked, shifted out abruptly and hampered FORTY NIL MANLY (Jockey D. Hayse). Apprentice Mitchell’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence at midnight on Saturday 20th February 2016, up to and including Sunday 28th February 2016. In assessing penalty stewards took into account Aprentice Mitchell’s guilty plea, her exemplary record in relation to the rule and her forthright evidence.

Inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight, then at the 100 metres Apprentice Payne had to stop riding and straighten her mount.

STAR TRUCE – Began awkwardly with its head in the air and lost ground.

PRINCELY – Was buffeted between runners at the start.

SUNSET IN NEW YORK – Was bumped at the start.

Race 7: Evergreen Racing Surface BenchMark 60 Handicap - 1609 metres
1st – MADEMOISELLE ZARIZ 2nd – TIRYNS 3rd – PULSAR 4th - PRESS PLAY

FRUMBOLI – As Apprentice R. Payne was injured and unable to fulfil her engagement, and no apprentice was available, Jockey S. Kaya was substituted and permitted to ride the gelding 1kg overweight.

BERNICATTI – Slow to begin. Rounding the first turn, near the 1400 metres, had to be checked when racing tight to the inside of another runner.

ZALSNAAP – Slow to begin. Raced 3 wide without cover.

SHERIDAN – On returning to scale Jockey G Kliese reported that his mount was under pressure from the 800 metres, failed to respond and was most disappointing.

PULSAR – Approaching the 200 metres was disappointed when attempting a narrow run, then shifted back to the inside to obtain clear running and shortly after that had to be steadied when awkwardly placed on heels.
