Race 1: URBAN MISS MAKE-UP QTIS 2YO MAIDEN H'CAP – 1000M
 
STARZULU – Slow to begin.
 
TAWHIRI – Raced greenly in the early and middle stages and shifted out near the 800m, hampering another runner.
 
LITTLE ARROWS – Began awkwardly and shifted out, bumping another runner. Shifted out shortly after the start, bumping another runner on the hind quarters. Hampered near the 800m when another runner shifted out. Shifted in slightly near the 200m and was checked from the heels of another runner which shifted out.
 
ROYAL COMEDY – Bumped heavily by another runner on jumping. Shifted out under pressure near the 200m, causing another runner to be checked. Rider W. D’Avila, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 200m he permitted his mount to shift out when not sufficiently clear of LITTLE ARROWS (J. Stanley) causing that runner be checked. Stewards acknowledged a slight shift inwards from LITTLE ARROWS, in this incident. As stewards deemed this to be a mid-range incident, W. D’Avila’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 12 days, to commence at midnight on Saturday 24 February and expire at midnight on Thursday 8 March 2018. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed deep lacerations to both hind legs.
 
SWEET JUNE – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
ZLOTO – Raced wide for the majority of the event. Had a tendency to hang out rounding the home turn.
 
VALUATE – Bumped on the hind quarters shortly after the start and became unbalanced.
 
Following the running of this event the track was downgraded to HEAVY 8.
 
Race 2: NQ EXCAVATIONS BENCHMARK 60 H'CAP – 1400M
 
JORDAN – Slow to begin.
 
DAMKY – The horse was found to have bled from both nostrils during the event. Trainer E. Sewell was advised that the horse would incur a mandatory three-month bar from racing under AR. 53A, and prior to racing again must gallop satisfactorily over 1000m in the presence of a steward. When questioned regarding her riding tactics on the gelding, apprentice E. Smith advised that her instructions were to ride forward, as per the horse’s racing pattern, however once obtaining the lead her mount raced keenly and was unable to be restrained. Stewards noted the explanation.
 
MAGIC BELINDA – Fractious in the barriers. Slow to begin.
 
WINSOMEMORE – When questioned regarding his riding tactics, apprentice L. Dodds advised that his instructions were to race in a forward position, however after beginning very well, his mount commenced to overrace in the early and middle stages and refused to settle. Stewards noted his explanation.
 
Race 3: GLOBAL WELDING SUPPLIES BENCHMARK 70 H'CAP – 1300M
 
TAMBO’S HEART – Began awkwardly, making contact with its outside barrier partition.
 
LOVER OF LIFE – Apprentice R. Payne pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 137(b) in that she failed to ride her mount out to the end of the race. Apprentice Payne was fined the sum of $500. In determining penalty, stewards were of the opinion that apprentice Payne’s actions had cost her mount outright 3rd placing.
 
BELORUM – Slow to begin.
 
THE BEE’S KNEES – Slow to begin. Shifted wider on the track leaving the 700m and raced wide for the remainder of the event.
 
Race 4: JK EVENT MANAGEMENT CLASS 3 PLATE – 1609M
 
The start of this race was delayed when BOCAGE proved difficult to load. Trainer W. Kenning was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse’s barrier manners.
 
CARLINO’S WAY – Raced wide in the early stages and was forced wider for a short distance near the 1300m by another runner which shifted out.
 
MEDIEVAL – Overraced for a short distance near the 1300m and momentarily shifted wider, forcing another runner outwards.
 
DANZ THE MAN – Slow to begin.
 
BANSHEE JET – Overraced for a short distance near the 1300m. Rider N. Day reported that the mare was disappointing today and in his opinion may have come to the end of its preparation. Trainer S. Sigvart advised that he was disappointed with the mare’s performance today and will monitor the horse’s progress over the coming days and notify stewards should anything come to his attention that may have affected the performance. Stewards advised Mr Sigvart that a warning would be placed on the mare’s performance today.
 
BOCAGE – Rider J. Stanley reported that near the 1000m he was struck in the mouth with a clod of dirt, which placed him at a disadvantage in riding the horse out over the final stages. He added that in his opinion BOCAGE was not entirely comfortable in today’s track conditions.
 
Race 5: HYGAIN MAIDEN PLATE – 1200M
 
SPREAD THE NEWS – Slow to begin.
 
CRAIGLEA UNIT – Began awkwardly and shifted out, bumping another runner.
 
FRENCH BUBBLES – Slow to begin and was bumped by another runner.
 
KENSINGTON STAR – Slow to begin and shifted out, bumping another runner. Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
LEIGHWAY – Bumped by another runner on jumping.
 
RAVAILLION – Raced wide for the majority of the event. Compounded badly in the home straight. Trainer A. Cameron advised that after its disappointing performance today, it is his intention that the horse be retired from racing. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
 
EXIT LOUNGE – Slow to begin.
 
Race 6: GRACIE SIGNS QTIS 3YO H'CAP – 1000M
 
The start of this race was delayed when FINE ‘N’ DEVINE was reluctant to load. Trainer R. Inglis was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse’s barrier manners.
 
CRAIGLEA VELVET – Slow to begin.
 
OUR ATOM – Slow to begin and was bumped by another runner. Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
SUN DECK – Slow to begin and shifted out, bumping another runner. Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
FLAMIN’ SID – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
Following the running of this event the track was further downgraded to HEAVY 9.
 
 
Race 7: CARLTON MID CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1200M
 
SPACE TIME – Slow to begin. Laid in under pressure near the 200m before being corrected and then shifted out.
 
GOOD CATCH – Slow to begin.
 
GOLDEN GUARDIAN – Slow to begin. Raced wide for the majority of the event. When questioned regarding the tactics she adopted on GOLDEN GUARDIAN, rider S. Wiseman stated that the gelding was not comfortable in the track conditions and as a result she allowed the horse to drift wider in the straight in an attempt to find better going. Stewards noted her explanation.
 
BLAZON TALES – Slow to begin. Raced wide for the majority of the event.
