YOU KNOW THE ONE – Over-raced in the early and middle stages and as a result raced 3 wide without cover for the majority of the race.  Bumped by another runner near the 350m. On returning to scale rider C. Whiteley reported that, in his opinion, the gelding was not comfortable with the fitting of its tongue-tie. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the tightness of the tongue-tie may have had a bearing on today’s performance. This matter was drawn to the attention of trainer W. Pomfrett, who was not present at today’s meeting.

TAWHIRI – Hampered near the 350m when another runner, which was bumped, shifted out.

Race 2: UBET Maiden H’cap – 1400m

BENTO – Slow to begin.  When questioned into the seemingly improved performance of the mare today, trainer G. Sewell advised that it was the horse’s 4th start for the stable and had been troublesome to train, Mr Sewell added he had made a number of gear changes leading up to today’s race, which he felt was a telling point in its performance today. Stewards noted the explanation.

DAESY DANORO – Unable to obtain clear running from the 300m until inside the 100m.  Rider D. Simmons was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts right out to the finish of the race.  Stewards did not believe that this matter had any bearing on the horse’s finishing performance today.

Race 3: Lazy Yak Open H’cap – 1200m

SPACE TIME – Slow to begin. Over-raced in the early stages.

STELLAR KNIGHT – Slow to begin.

FORGIVE ME – Slow to begin.

KAPHNI – Raced wide in the early and middle stages.

CONCRETUS – Began awkwardly. Throwing its head in the air, striking rider N. Nelson in the head.  Miss Nelson explained to stewards that this put her in some discomfort for the remainder of the race. Finished tailed off. Trainer M. Whitehouse explained that whilst disappointed with the horse’s performance today, and whilst noting the discomfort of the rider after being hit in the head, he would proceed with the horse’s current preparation at this stage.  Stewards noted the explanation, however advised Mr Whitehouse that a warning would be placed on the horse’s performance today.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Ms Nelson declared herself clear of any injury and able to fulfil her raining engagements.

Race 5: Mater Health Services Benchmark 70 H’cap – 1400m

I’M NOT SURE – Slow to begin.

BOLD KINGSTON – Slow to begin.

BETTER FUTURE – Slow to begin.  Raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages and threw its head in the air on a number of occasions when being restrained, and as a result raced wide for the majority of the race.

Race 6: Townsville Jaguar Land Rover Benchmark 65 H’cap – 1000m

SUGAR RAY RED – Shifted out on jumping away and bumped with another runner. Raced wide for the majority of the race.

CYCLONE FUGITIVE – Bumped by another runner on jumping away, becoming momentarily unbalanced.

FREEZE ‘N’ TEASE – Improved onto the heels of a tiring runner approaching the winning    post and was restrained. When questioned into the seemingly disappointing performance, rider C. Whitely explained that the mare raced flat today and failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure. Trainer J. Caught advised stewards that following today’s race it was now his intention to freshen the horse prior to its next start.

Race 7: Wedding Venues Townsville Club Class 2 H’cap – 1200m

RISING KING – Declared a late scratching at 12.20 pm acting on veterinary advice.

ZELENUS – Slow to begin.

FERINGO – Slow to begin. On return to scale, rider J. Stanley advised stewards that, in his opinion, the gelding may not have backed up from its previous run. Trainer R. Long advised that it was the horse’s second start from a spell and whilst being disappointed with its performance today, will continue with its preparation and step it up in distance for its next race start.

VINCE THE PRINCE – Bounded in the air as the start was effected.

BANSHEE JET – Held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

ROCKING MY WORLD – Disappointed for a run and was restrained near the 300m.

LEIGHWAY – Raced wide for the majority of the race.

HARVEST PRIDE – When questioned into the tactics adopted on the gelding today, rider C. Whiteley advised he was  given no specific instructions, however due to the lack of speed in the race after the horse began well it had travelled well in the lead. Stewards noted his explanation.

WE’LL BEAT IT – Compounded badly over the concluding stages. Trainer B. Williams was advised that following the poor performance today, the horse’s nomination will be refused at TAB meetings until it showed improvement in form by way of country race meetings.
