Race 1: Landmark BM65 H'cap – 1050m

The start was delayed when ROMAN SILVER proved reluctant to proceed to the barriers.

Correct weight was delayed to allow jockey L. Attard to view the stewards’ patrol films to determine if MOOLAH MISS, which was drawn to his outside, prematurely broke the barriers and therefore gained an advantage. After viewing the films, stewards were satisfied that whilst MOOLAH MISS did lunge forward shortly prior to the gates opening it did not break the gates prematurely and therefore all barriers opened simultaneously, and as such correct weight was declared on the Judge’s placings.

LA MINA – After being fractious in the mounting yard was examined by the veterinary surgeon and deemed suitable to race. Raced wide throughout.

RIVER GEORGIA – Crowded at the start. When questioned regarding the performance of the mare, apprenticed E. Ljung advised her mount failed to show sufficient speed to obtain a forward position and therefore settled in the second half of the field. She added that when the race quickened, her mount failed to sprint as she had anticipated, which she attributed to the horse rising significantly in weight from its most recent start.

GOLD PAN – Crowded at the start.

AWESOME SIGHT – Raced in restricted room for a short distance near the 900m.

CAMPIONESSA – Raced wide throughout. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider T. Williams advised that the mare failed to show its customary speed today and therefore she was obliged to obtain a position off the pace which was in contrast to the horse’s established racing pattern. She added, in her opinion, the mare failed to travel strongly throughout the event and when placed under pressure failed to respond to her riding. Apprentice Williams further added that, in her opinion, the mare raced flat today which she attributed to her mount not backing up from its most recent start. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities at the time of inspection. Stewards will follow up with trainer D. Murphy in relation to the horse’s recovery in the days following the race.

Race 2: Brookstead Hotel/Vary Agricultural Services BM7 H'cap – 1200m

TISANI TOMSO – Jumped inwards at the start, bumping another runner. Apprentice Ljung reported that in the early and middle stages of the event when in the leading position her mount overraced for a considerable distance when pressured by a runner to her outside, which itself was overracing.

WICKED BABE – Bumped heavily at the start by another runner.

GIRLS COMMAND – Tightened for room shortly after the start and lost ground. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, jockey S. Bogenhuber advised that her mount travelled comfortably throughout the event, however coming to the 500m when attempting to improve into the race, the filly failed to quicken as she expected and ran on only fairly in the home straight. Trainer M. Nolan advised that immediately following the race he was disappointed with the performance, however after having the opportunity to view the replay of the race, in his opinion the filly ran on reasonably in the home straight and as such was not entirely disappointed with the performance. He added that it was his intention to continue with the horse’s current preparation. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

WRITTENINTHERAIN- Tightened for room shortly after the start and lost ground.

LORD BEAUFORT – Tightened for room shortly after the start.

SMOOTH TALKER – Forced wider on the track by another runner rounding the home turn. Jockey L. Tilley was fined $100 for using his whip in consecutive strides prior to the 100m.

CROUPIER – Raced wide for the majority of the race.

BUSH CAVIAR – On return to scale, rider B. Newport reported to stewards that his mount commenced to hang out rounding the turn near the 800m, which resulted in him pressuring the leader despite his attempts to come back and sit at the girth of that horse in the middle stages of the event. He added that from the 500m, BUSH CAVIAR shifted wider on the track despite his efforts whilst hanging out, which resulted in him being unable to fully test his mount until entering the home straight.

Race 3: Pittstop Pty Ltd/Farmhaul Class 1 H'cap – 1300m

STRENGTH – Slow to begin. Commenced to race keenly for a considerable distance passing the 1200m, and approaching the 1000m shifted in and made contact with the running rail.

ZARACHA – Tightened for room shortly after the start and lost ground. A post race veterinary examination of the horse, which tailed off, revealed an upward fixation of the soft palate. Based on this, the trainer’s representative advised that they would now experiment with the gear on the horse.

MATILDARE – Rider B. Newport was reminded of his obligations in relation to excessively slowing the pace near the 900m, which caused LADY CASUARINA and THE BIG CROWNING to be steadied. Raced in restricted room for a short distance near the 500m when LADY MICAELA shifted in when not completely clear. Cast its off hind plate in running.

SHOTACROSS THE BOW – Raced wide throughout.

MARLAHN – Raced in restricted room and lost ground leaving the 500m.

Race 5: Hunter Seeds 0-65 H'cap – 2150m

CALEDONIA’S CALL – Trainer T. Sears advised stewards that the gelding will be ridden further back in the field tonight than at its most recent start if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly. Jumped in the air at the start. Checked to avoid heels near the 2000m. At a subsequent inquiry, N. Nishio, rider of STEWBALL, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 2000m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of CALEDONIA’S CALL, resulting in that horse being checked to avoid the heels of STEWBALL. N. Nishio was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 5 meetings, to commence at midnight tonight and to expire Saturday, 6 June. When assessing penalty stewards took into account jockey Nishio’s good record in relation to this rule. Overraced during the early and middle stages. and near the 700m when attempting to shift wider on the track was disappointed for a run and forced to steady. A post race veterinary examination revealed mild respiratory distress and fluid in its trachea, and soft cough. Trainer T. Sears advised that the gelding would now be sent for a spell.

TREASURES SECRET – When questioned as to the improved performance, trainer M. Nolan advised that following the disappointing performance at its 2 most recent starts he elected to take the blinkers off the gelding tonight, which he felt improved the performance. He added that the performance was also aided by the rider saving ground by obtaining inside runs in the home straight rather than shifting wider on the track.
