SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

From QRIC inquiry, 1.12.16

Queensland Racing Integrity Commission stewards concluded their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding apprentice E Ljung being dislodged from Red Heavy near the 300m in the Pat O’Shea Plate, 1000m, on 24 September 2016.

The inquiry was opened immediately following the race and after taking evidence from a number of riders was adjourned to allow apprentice Ljung to be present as she was transported to hospital for further treatment.

At today’s inquiry evidence was provided by apprentice Ljung.

After giving consideration to the evidence in its totality, stewards found that near the 300m, Red Heavy shifted in of its own accord whilst changing stride, resulting in apprentice Ljung becoming unbalanced and ultimately dislodged.

Race 1: Westbrook Trailers QTIS 2yo Maiden Plate – 1000m

ANDRUM – Jumped in the air at the start and lost ground,10 lengths, and then was reluctant to race in the early stages of the event. When questioned regarding the performance of the gelding, jockey R. McMahon stated that after being slowly the gelding was reluctant to stretch out in the early stages, and after passing the 650m he applied some pressure to the gelding to improve his position, however unduly so being mindful of the stage of the race. He added that the gelding ran on reasonably well over the concluding stages of the event. Jockey McMahon further stated that, in his opinion, ANDRUM ran on reasonably well given that that the horse was well back in the field in the early stages. Stewards noted his explanation.

STAR CUGAT – Began awkwardly and shifted out.

MASK STEPENNY – On pulling up dislodged rider A. Denby. After being treated by the ambulance officers, Jockey A Denby was transported to Toowoomba Base Hospital for further observation. Riding changes were made as per the Stewards Summary Sheet.

Race 2: Steel-Line Garage Doors Australia Class 1 H’cap 1000m

Betting for this race was put on hold until confirmation that no rider was available on course to take the ride on BAGGER BLUES

BAGGER BLUES – Declared a late scratching at 5.17 pm when no other rider was available due to rider A. Denby being injured in Race 1 and unable to fulfil her engagement.

As betting hadn’t opened there were no deductions applicable.

JAKUTA – Began awkwardly and shifted in. Was heavily bumped approaching the 150m by CAPTAIN’S PICK, which laid in under pressure. Raced 3 wide throughout without cover.

CAPTAIN’S PICK – Shifted in shortly after the start, making contact with NORTHERN WINGS. Had a tendency to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages bumping JAKUTA.

NORTHERN WINGS – Bumped shortly after the start. Bumped heavily passing the 800m.

DUBLE MEANING – Hampered shortly after the start between runners, and after passing the 800m commenced to overrace and was obliged to shift away from heels and in doing so made heavy contact with NORTHERN WINGS.

RED WARNING – Had to be steadied when racing in restricted room to the inside of CAPTAIN’S PICK, which shifted in marginally at the 550m.

IRONBORN – Inclined to lay out rounding the home turn.

EXCEEDINGLY KOOL – Raced wide throughout and rider B. Derbyshire reported her mount hung out throughout the event.

Race 3: Wellcamp Airport Ratings Band 0-58 H'cap – 1625m

After the running of Race 2 the track was upgraded to a Good 4.

MONSIEUR HUGHES – Reared as the start was effected and lost ground.

LA LA ROCK – Hampered between runners on jumping away.

WAR FRONT – Raced wide after passing the 800m.

ZAPATA FALLS – Hurdled the 1500m crossing shortly after the start and then commenced to overrace in the early and middle stages.

HUNDRED – Raced in restricted room rounding the home turn to the inside of CASINO GOLD and then had some difficulty obtaining clear running approaching the 150m.

Race 4: Bluescope Steel Class 2 H’cap – 1300m

The start of this race was delayed to allow for the running of an interstate event.

SUITE MOVER – Declared a late scratching at 8.13 am on veterinary advice.

TRUE JOY – As jockey N. Thomas’s arrival was delayed, jockey R. McMahon was substituted as the rider of the horse. Had a tendency to overrace after leaving the 900m and got its head up when the pace slackened.

THIN DISGUISE - Slow to begin. Had to be steadied off heels at the 750m

MARGO MAREE – Blundered on jumping away. Raced 3 wide with cover throughout.

SECRETS SURROUND – Raced 3 wide throughout without cover. Apprentice M. Cox, in the presence of trainer Mr M. Kropp was questioned regarding the tactics she adopted on the horse. Apprentice Cox stated her instructions were to push forward from the start and take up a position on the back of the likely leader, RULER’S PRIDE. However, after beginning well she appeared not to overly pressure her mount and at a point some 200m after the start attempted to press forward however when attempting to do so was caught in a 4-wide position. Stewards advised apprentice M Cox that in hindsight she would have been better served that after beginning well, push forward to obtain a position closer to the rail, and then look for cover if possible. Stewards felt that this ride lacked judgement and although not to the extent to be culpable under the rules, the ride would be referred to the Apprentice training department for review.

RULERS PRIDE – Stewards questioned jockey S. Bogenhuber regarding her riding tactics in the early stages, whereby after assuming the lead, albeit racing 1 wide, an opportunity appeared for her to improve forward and take up the leading position on the rail. Jockey S Bogenhuber expressed concern that had she pushed forward for a considerable distance to get to that point with the 59 kilogram impost that it would have been to the overall detriment of her horse, adding that she felt comfortable with the speed of the race at this stage which, in her opinion, would have enabled RULERS PRIDE to finish the race off well. Stewards accepted jockey S Bogenhuber’s explanation and noted her comments.

Race 5: Gary Brosnan Gala Special Maiden H’cap – 1100m

RED BEACH – As S. Apthorpe was riding at another venue and not riding at tonight’s meeting, N. Nishio was substituted as the rider of the horse.

STELLAR KNIGHT – Bumped at the start. Rider J Oliver was reprimanded for using the whip 6 times prior to the 100m

TACTICAL MANUEVER – Bumped at the start, and tired over the concluding stages. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

LITTLE ALBERT – Hampered shortly after the start when tightened for room between runners and had to be checked when tightened for room passing the 900m. After passing the 200m was inclined to lay in away from TACTICAL MANUEVER, which was tiring.

SPACE AGE – Had to be checked at the 900m when tightened for room. Jockey N. Nishio, rider of RED BEACH, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that passing the 900m he allowed his mount to shift in when not fully clear of ROSIE’S TIARA, which in turn was taken in on to LITTLE ALBERT, which had to be checked and taken in on to SPACE AGE, which in turn had to be checked and lose its rightful running. Jockey Nishio was suspended from riding in races for a period of 11 days to commence at midnight 10 December 2016 and to expire at midnight 21 December 2016. In determining penalty Stewards were mindful of Jockey N Nishio’s guilty plea and good record however believed the carelessness was mid-range interference.

Race 6: Metroll Toowoomba Class 4 H’cap – 1200m

MINIVER – As apprentice S. Lacy was delayed at another venue, she was unable to fulfil her engagement and after a application from trainer Mr. B Robinson, Jockey A Badger was allowed to take the mount when no other suitable apprentice was available.

LIVE FAST – Obliged to race 3 wide in the early stages before being forced 4 wide after passing the 600m.

LADY MERCURY – Overraced in the early stages when the pace slackened passing the 800m.

JOHNNY BE QUICK – Inclined to hang out after passing the 400m and rounding the home turn.
