Race 1: GAINSBOROUGH LODGE MAIDEN PLATE – 1850M

DANGER IN DEVON – Made the crossing near the 1500m awkwardly. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

FLYNN EFFECT – Stewards questioned the stable representative for Mr. R. Lyford in relation to the seemingly improved performance of the gelding. He advised that the gelding only had one prior start for the Lyford stable, and he therefore could not speak about the horse’s form prior to that race. He also advised that at its first start for the stable, the gelding stood flat-footed and missed the start by several lengths, and the horse therefore underwent extensive barrier re-education in preparation for today’s event. He also added that the step up in distance, and the addition of blinkers to the horse’s gear, were major contributing factors to the horse’s improved performance today. Stewards noted the explanation.

GREYNOMAD – On return to scale, jockey S. Bogenhuber advised that the gelding, which was having its first start over the distance today, was inclined to overrace during the early and middle stages which, in her opinion, was the reason for the horse failing to finish the race off as she expected over the concluding stages.

HIDDEN ACTION – Laid in under pressure in the home straight, and was forced to steady from heels and shift outwards to secure clear running near the 150m.

OTTIS – On return to scale, jockey L. Tilley could offer no explanation for disappointing performance of the gelding, which weakened badly over the concluding stages of the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.

TELFORD – Forced very wide on the track near the 1200m, and from that point was allowed to stride forward by its rider to obtain a position on the pace, which resulted in the gelding racing wide for the remainder of the event.

VELLEITY – Steadied from heels near the 1400m.

BOUCHARD – Trainer R. Smith was fined $100 for failing to effect a gear change of blinkers on by the prescribed time. Raced keenly whilst being restrained for some distance after exiting the home straight on the first occasion.

NOREENA – Forced wider on the track by another runner near the 1200m.

TURN UP THE HEAT – Began awkwardly. Raced ungenerously for a short distance after being restrained from heels near the 1400m. Shifted wider on the track after making the turn near the 1200m awkwardly.

PET DRAGON – Raced wide throughout.

Race 2: CARLTON DRY CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1000M

BLACK CRUSADE – Held up, and unable to improve, from the 400m to the early stages of the home straight.

ROYAL TONE – Bumped heavily at the start.

THE CAPTAIN’S LADY – Bumped heavily at the start.

PIC’S PEARL – Bumped at the start. Raced wide throughout the event.

CHOICE SON – Bumped heavily at the start and became unbalanced. Raced keenly in the early stages, and despite Apprentice S. Sweeney’s efforts to restrain her mount to a position closer to the rail, continued to overrace and, as a result, raced very wide throughout the event.

MONTEAL JOE – Hung in from the 700m and proved difficult to ride out in the home straight.

Race 3: UBET MAIDEN H’CAP – 1200M

GOODNIGHT SAIGON, which was found to be lame in the near fore leg upon arrival at the barriers, was declared a late scratching at 1.16pm on veterinary advice. Following the event, Stewards ordered that all monies invested on GOODNIGHT SAIGON be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:

5 cents in the dollar for the Win #3
5 cents in the dollar for place of winner #3
6 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #2
7 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #7

Trainer Mr. P. Nolan will be advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to being permitted to race again.

GILDED LION – Slow to begin.

POOLENZO – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.

PLAYBOOK – Checked near the 800m to avoid the heels of KIMHORSEDASHIAN, which shifted in at that point. J. Oliver, the rider of KIMHORSEDASHIAN, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that at that point he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of PLAYBOOK. J. Oliver’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 days, to commence at midnight on Monday 1 January 2018 and expire at midnight on Tuesday 9 January 2018. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration jockey Oliver’s guilty plea and his good record in relation to this rule. Bumped by another runner and became unbalanced near the 200m.

BONDI BATTLE – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

SCHWARZY – Slow to begin.

HARD LOVE – Raced wide for the majority of the event. Laid in after commencing to weaken near the 200m, and made contact with the hindquarters of PLAYBOOK which became unbalanced and shifted out, resulting in HARD LOVE being tightened for room and losing ground.

PROLETAIRE – Raced wide for the majority of the event.

Race 4: YELLOWGLEN MAIDEN H’CAP – 1200M

PUNDIT – Tightened for room at the start. Raced with its head in the air, and had a tendency to lay in whilst being restrained in the early and middle stages.

MALEFIC – Bumped heavily at the start.

MY BELLY BUTTON – Slow to begin and lost ground. Shifted out abruptly near the 250m when bumped by PUNDIT which also shifted out abruptly at that point. Apprentice N. Keal, the rider of PUNDIT, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that at a point he directed his mount to shift out abruptly when insufficiently clear of MY BELLY BUTTON. Apprentice Keal’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 8 days, to commence at midnight on Monday 1 January 2017 and expire at midnight on Tuesday 9 January 2018. In determining penalty, Stewards took into account Apprentice Keal’s guilty plea and his good record in relation to this rule.

ROYAL EQUIANO – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.  Stewards questioned Trainer J. Crompton in relation to the seemingly improved performance of the filly. Mrs. Crompton advised that the horse performed well at its first start in a race and, for that reason, she had expected the horse to be difficult to be at its second start at Dalby on 12 December 2017. She added that on that day however, the filly became quite agitated in the mounting yard and sweated up profusely prior to the race. Mrs. Crompton added that, in her opinion, that this was a good run as the horse had only been beaten by 5.5 lengths after displaying such pre-race mannerisms. She went on to say that the filly had continued to work well in preparation for today’s event and the addition of blinkers to the horse’s gear, as well as it wearing earmuffs prior to the event, were contributing factors to its success today. Stewards noted the explanation.

ROSIE’S TIARA – Raced wide throughout.

ELECTRIC ANNA – Raced wide throughout.

NELLY’S NIECE – Bumped heavily at the start.

RED BLANKET – Slow to begin.

Race 5: PAT KYNOCH BOOKMAKER BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 1200M

IRON GEORGE – Trainer Mr. B. Currie was fined $300 for failing to produce the horse’s Thoroughbred Identification Card. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration Mr. B. Currie’s recent poor record in relation to this rule.

LOVE AND LIES – Steadied passing the 900m after racing in restricted room to the inside of BURNING MOUNTAIN (Apprentice H. English) which was taken in by IRON GEORGE (Apprentice B. Nothdurft). Apprentice B. Nothdurft was reprimanded for shifting in when insufficiently clear. Stewards questioned jockey R. Williams in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance of the mare. Jockey R. Williams advised that the mare obtained its customary forward position today however, after receiving interference at the 900m failed to travel after that point and, in her opinion, proved disappointing. She added that the mare, which she rides work, had been working well prior to today’s event. Trainer J. Williams could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance, however she agreed with jockey R. Williams that the interference suffered at the 900m may have contributed to the performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer J. Williams undertook to advise Stewards should any abnormalities become apparent in the coming days which may explain the disappointing performance.

REAL MYSTIQUE – Began awkwardly and lost ground.

Race 6: NEIL MANSELL CONCRETE QTIS 3YO FILLIES MAIDEN PLATE – 1000M

The start of this race was delayed to allow the broadcast of an interstate event.

After viewing the Stewards’ patrol footage, R. Palmer, the rider of KENDALL’S DREAM, placed 2nd by the Judge, lodged an objection against SHES AN EAGER LASS being declared the winner, alleging interference near the 550m. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the patrol footage, Stewards found that near the 550m, KENDALL’S DREAM, which was racing to the inside of SHES AN EAGER LASS, shifted in of its own accord whilst racing greenly and, as a result, made contact with the running rail, which caused the filly to become unbalanced and lose ground. As Stewards were of the view that SHES AN EAGER LASS at all times maintained a position one off the fence, they were satisfied that any interference sustained by KENDALL’S DREAM was in no way attributable to SHES AN EAGER LASS, and therefore dismissed the objection and declared correct weight on the Judge’s placings. In addition, jockey R. Palmer was fined $200 for lodging what Stewards deemed to be a frivolous objection.

BRENDA – Shifted out abruptly on jumping away making very heavy contact with MISS PAPER LACE which lost ground. Held up for a short distance rounding the home turn.

KENDALL’S DREAM – Raced greenly throughout.

EDENANNIE – Declared at late scratching at 8.20am on veterinary advice.

MAGESTICAL MAIDEN – After being slightly slow to begin, was further hampered when bumped heavily by another runner. Raced wide throughout.

MASSIE WHISPER – Raced wide throughout.

PROUD’S SEQUEL – Raced wide throughout.

TRUE COLOURS – Raced wide without cover throughout.

HIDDEN LIGHT – Jumped shadows on the track on two occasions near the 800m. Steadied to avoid the heels of another runner at the 600m.

SANDRELLI – Shifted out near the 300m in an endeavour to secure clear running, and bumped another runner.

MUSIC SCENE – After being slightly slow to begin, was further tightened for room on jumping away and, as a result, settled further back in the field than anticipated.

Race 8: TOOWOOMBA PORTABLE TOILETS CLASS 3 PLATE – 1625M

The start of this race was delayed to allow the broadcast of an interstate event.

MAITRE DU JEU - Raced keenly in the middles stages of the event.

DAVOR – On return to scale, jockey N. Tomizawa advised that he was told to ride the gelding in the second half of the field today as the horse has shown a tendency to overrace in its previous races. He added that the gelding travelled well within itself in the early and middle stages, however finished the race off in a manner which indicated to him that it would be better suited to races over 1800m to 2000m at this stage in its preparation. Stewards noted the explanation.

INDELO – Held up badly and unable to improve from the 300m until it shifted to the outside near the 150m when able to secure clear running.

WORLD SERIES – Raced wide without cover throughout.

Apprentice B. Nothdurft, the rider of MAITRE DU JEU, was dislodged on pulling up, and suffered a seemingly harmless fall.

Race 9: SHANNON SIGN COMPANY CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1200M

WAKE UP SAILOR – On return to scale, jockey S. Bogenhuber reported that the horse travelled well throughout the event, however when placed under pressure in the home straight ran on fairly, but weakened over the concluding stages.
