Race 1: HANNAS CLASS 3 H’CAP – 1000M

The start of this race was delayed due to CHASE THE WIND being removed from the barriers after a towel, which was used to remove sweat from the horse, was dropped in the horse’s barrier.

QUEEN CARLEY – Trainer C. Smith reported to Stewards that the mare got its tongue over the bit during the race which, in his opinion, may have affected the horse’s performance today.

Following the running of this race, the track was upgraded to a Good 3 retrospective.

Race 2: COCA COLA AMATIL MAIDEN H’CAP – 1000M

CIMMERON SPIRIT – Began awkwardly.

COURTING JOY – Laid in for the majority of the home straight and proved difficult to ride out. Steadied from the heels of another runner leaving the 200m.

BLACKBERRY – Began awkwardly and lost ground and, as a result, settled further back in the field than anticipated. When questioned by Stewards regarding the performance, Apprentice R. Ride advised that the mare began awkwardly, lost ground at the start and, as a result, settled further back in the field than she had anticipated. She added that, given her position in running, she was forced to ask the mare to improve into the race from a point approaching the 700m and, in her opinion, this was to the horse’s detriment today having regard to its previous racing pattern. Apprentice R. Ride went on to say that she felt that the mare had improved into a reasonable position approaching the home turn, however it failed to run on in the home straight.

DUELLATOR – Trainer B. Dais was fined $100 for the late declaration of Apprentice B. Thornton as rider. Raced wide throughout.

SIREEANNA – Raced wide without cover throughout.

MRS QUIGLEY – Laid out over the concluding stages.

THEATRIC – Began awkwardly and lost ground.

CYCLONE MIA – Lost the near fore plate in running. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

Race 3: SEDL AGENCIES MAIDEN PLATE – 1850M

BENICSTRESS – Forced wider on the track by another runner near the 1700m.

FLIGHT PRINCE – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Checked severely near the 1400m when racing to the inside of ALA DI BRONZE, which hung in despite the efforts of its rider. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

ALA DI BRONZE – Hung out and shifted wider on the track near the 1600m. Hung in badly near the 1400m despite the efforts of its rider, causing significant interference to another runner. Trainer B. Waldron advised Stewards that it would be his intention for the horse to now leave his stable, however he was advised that the horse will be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to racing again. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

KIRA’S BEAT – Stewards questioned Trainer M. Hemmings regarding the tactics adopted on the mare, which led in today’s event, as this was contrary to the horse’s established racing pattern. Mr. Hemmings advised that following the horse’s run two starts ago, jockey J. Taylor advised connections to step the mare up in distance for its next start and attempt to have it  ridden in a more forward position. Mr. Hemmings added that he therefore stepped the mare up to 2200m for its next start and again engaged jockey J. Taylor to ride the mare, with the intention of settling in a forward position as discussed following its previous run. Mr. Hemmings stated that he was surprised that in the early stages, J. Taylor restrained the mare to a trailing position and expressed some disappointment with his riding as a result. Mr. Hemmings added that he had today instructed Apprentice M. Murphy to attempt to ride the mare in a forward position which was consistent with his intention at the horse’s previous start. Stewards advised Mr. Hemmings that the manner in which the horse was ridden today was in contrast to the horse’s previous runs and constituted a change of tactics. After taking into account these particular circumstances, Mr. Hemmings was reprimanded for failing to notify Stewards in accordance with AR. 135A of the intention to have the horse ridden in a manner different from the manner in which it has been ridden at recent starts, and was reminded of his obligations in relation to this rule.

I FOUND SOMEONE – A post-race veterinary examination of the mare, which tailed off, failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer P. Nolan Jnr. advised that in the light of the mare’s performance today he will now freshen the horse up and drop it back in distance. Stewards advised Mr. Nolan Jnr. that should the mare race similarly in its future race starts, they would consider the horse’s immediate racing future.

Race 4: NEIL MANSELL TRANSPORT QTIS 3YO MAIDEN H’CAP – 1200M

BACK CHAT – Slow to begin. Raced in restricted room for a short distance near the 900m. Hung in in the home straight, and proved difficult to ride out.

ANGEL DANE – Raced in restricted room for a short distance near the 900m.

COLPO DI TAMBURO – Raced wide without cover throughout.

LITTLE JOHN – Stewards questioned Trainer B. Currie in relation to the seemingly improved performance of the colt. Mr. Currie advised that the stable had always had an opinion of the horse and had been very disappointed with its first two starts. Mr. Currie added that the colt worked in the company of stablemate PUBLISHING POWER during the week and, based on this work, he had expected a forward performance today. Mr. Currie also advised that he added a tongue tie and blinkers to the horse’s gear today, and he felt this was the major contributing factor to its improved performance today. Stewards noted the explanation.

EDENANNIE – Slow to begin.

Race 5: M&K CONSTRUCTION GROUP CLASS 2 PLATE – 2150M

BRUBAKER – Slow to begin.

HARD EVIDENCE – Raced wide after passing the 1000m.

PRINCE MORPHEUS – Stewards inquired into an incident which occurred leaving the 300m. Subsequently, Apprentice N. Keal, the rider of WAR FRONT, was found guilty of performing an improper action under AR. 175(a), the particulars of the charge being that Apprentice N. Keal altered his whip action near the 300m in an endeavour to strike either Apprentice B. Nothdurft or his mount, PRINCE MORPHEUS. Apprentice N. Keal’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 3 weeks, with the term of the suspension to commence at midnight on Sunday, 28 January 2018, and expire at midnight on Sunday, 18 February 2018.

WAR FRONT – Stewards inquired into an incident approaching and passing the 1000m. Subsequently, Apprentice B. Nothdurft, the rider of PRINCE MORPHEUS, was found guilty of a charge of improper riding under AR. 137(a), the particulars of the charge being that approaching and passing the 1000m, after WAR FRONT (Apprentice N. Keal) obtained a position one off the fence to the inside of PRINCE MORPHEUS, Apprentice B. Nothdurft, whilst riding his mount along, raised his elbow making contact with Apprentice N. Keal and placing unnecessary pressure on WAR FRONT for some distance, making heavy contact with that runner and forcing it off its rightful running to a position on the fence. Apprentice B. Nothdurft’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 4 weeks, with the term of the suspension to commence at midnight on Saturday, 20 January 2018, and expire at midnight on Saturday, 17 February 2018. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account Apprentice B. Nothdurft’s relative inexperience as an apprentice rider and relevant penalty precedents.

SKYLIGHT – Raced in restricted room for a short distance near the 500m.

ISLAND SUNSET – Slow to begin. After racing keenly on heels in the middle stages, jockey Beau Appo permitted his mount to shift out and stride forward to obtain a leading position near the 900m.

Race 6: CARLTON DRY BENCHMARK 70 H’CAP – 1300M

BURNING MOUNTAIN – Shifted in when insufficiently clear of MUSTARRID near the 1000m which resulted in that runner being taken in onto JIM ‘N’ ANDY which was tightened for room and checked. Apprentice H. English, the rider of BURNING MOUNTAIN, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 1000m she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear. Apprentice English’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 8 days, to commence at midnight on Sunday 28 January 2018 and expire at midnight on Monday 5 February 2018. In determining penalty, Stewards took into account Apprentice English’s guilty plea, and her good record in relation to this rule.

MUSTARRID – Had difficulty obtaining clear running from the 500m until straightening, during which time the gelding had a tendency to lay in.

KUTTAMURRA AL – Laid in rounding the home turn.

FASTA THAN LIGHT – Raced wide for the majority. When questioned by Stewards, jockey R. Williams reported that she had expected her mount to be in a more forward position today, however after the gelding failed to muster early speed it settled further back in the field than anticipated. Jockey R. Williams could offer no tangible explanation for the horse’s poor performance today.

JIM ‘N’ ANDY – Brushed the running rail near the 900m. Tightened for room and checked near the 1000m.
