GENERAL

After acting on a report from the Compliance Assurance Team, Stewards inquired into the presence of a prohibited substance being located in the horse transport vehicle of Trainer S. Jokic.  After considering the matter Mr Jokic was issued with a charge pursuant to AR251(1)(b)(ii) in that he did bring on course a Chest Rub Ointment which could be used to produce a prohibited substance in a horse. Trainer S. Jokic was subsequently fined the sum of $400. In assessing penalty, Stewards considered the specific circumstances surrounding the breach, Mr Jokic’s guilty plea, his record in relation to the rule and his forthright evidence as well as the seriousness of the breach and the need for both general and specific deterrence to ensure the integrity of the industry. The gelding underwent a pre-race veterinary examination including the taking of pre-race blood samples and was passed fit to start.

CHICKA – Near the 200m, shifted in abruptly around heels in an attempt to obtain clear running. Despite the fact no interference occurred, given the abruptness of the shift Jockey N. Tomizawa was advised to exercise greater care and exhibit greater caution when attempting such manoeuvres. Stewards questioned Jockey N. Tomizawa why he elected to shift in to obtain clear running when a run appeared to be available to him between NOAH and LOADED GUN at that time. Jockey N. Tomizawa stated he had anticipated LOADED GUN, the runner to his inside, shifting out further closing that run. However, Jockey Tomizawa agreed that in hindsight attempting to improve into the run between LOADED GUN and NOAH would have been the more favourable option.

Thorburn was advised to exercise greater care. Stewards queried the tactics adopted by App Thorburn when shifting wider and making a forward move near the 900m. App Thorburn concurred with Stewards that he had erred by attempting that move at that time as more favourable options would have availed themselves had he pursued opportunities closer to the inside running rail.

LOVELY LEIGH – Finished tailed off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer C. Bills was advised a warning would be placed on the mare for poor performance.

Apprentice O. Webb was fined $200 under AR131(c) for a celebratory gesture prior to the winning post.

Eased leaving the 200m to shift to the inside of PIVOTAL MOTION after being reluctant to improve into a marginal run outside that runner. When queried by Stewards regarding the tactics in the home straight. Apprentice S. Champkin concurred with Stewards that with the benefit of hindsight, the more favourable option would have been to attempt to improve into the run which presented between PIVOTAL MOTION and CALM SEEKER leaving the 200m.

EPICURIOUS – Slow to begin.

MILITIARY KINGS – When questioned regarding the apparent improved performance, Trainer R. Watts stated the gelding was suited by racing over a more suitable distance and by the softer racing surface.
