This qualification describes the skills and knowledge required for individuals licensed to operate as a jockey and compete in industry-regulated events in the thoroughbred racing code.

Jockeys are athletes who ride racehorses at race meetings, barrier trials and trackwork. A jockey possesses the highest level of race riding skills, requiring a high degree of decision-making skill and reaction time during races, and the ability to exercise judgement when choosing mounts and assessing horse form.

This qualification is required for industry licensing and registration in some states and territories. Refer to the relevant state or territory Principal Racing Authority for current requirements including selection into an apprentice jockey program.

Entry requirements

To commence this qualification an individual must:

• have completed RGR30518 Certificate III in Racing (Trackwork Rider)

OR

• demonstrated skills and experience in riding and handling thoroughbred horses commensurate with the RGR30518 Certificate III in Racing (Trackwork Rider)

Program requirements

Entry into the RGR40221 Certificate IV in Racing (Jockey) is subject to meeting the selection and entry requirements of the relevant state or territory Principal Racing Authority's apprentice jockey program.

This includes prior completion of the RGR30518 Certificate III in Racing (Trackwork Rider), together with successful completion of the screening and eligibility requirements determined by the relevant Principal Racing Authority, which may include obtaining and maintaining the appropriate racing industry licence, fitness and riding assessments, integrity checks, employer suitability assessments, and other entry requirements.

The following requirements also apply to all students undertaking this program. They cover the physical demands, licensing, equipment and technology needs, and language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills involved in training and working as an apprentice jockey.

• Training and assessment involves a high level of physical activity. Students must maintain the fitness, strength and stamina required for race riding and be able to actively participate in scheduled training and assessment activities, both on and off-the-job.
• Students must complete workplace tasks in accordance with the expectations of their employing trainer.
• Students must possess adequate language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills to comprehend learning materials and effectively carry out routine work tasks within their role.
• Students must have access to a computer, laptop or tablet with reliable internet to engage with online materials, along with basic computer skills.
• Students are required to obtain appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for the course, which may include enclosed footwear, sun protection (hat and sunscreen), an industry-approved riding helmet, an industry-approved safety vest, riding boots, a high-visibility vest (if not supplied by the employer), a helmet light, gloves (optional), goggles (optional), and a riding crop.

Please note: RQ will contact individuals who express interest in enrolling to assess their language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills. The team can provide supplementary learning support where basic assistance is needed, and can facilitate referrals to specialised LLN development providers for those requiring more extensive support, ensuring learners are ready to commence the course effectively.

Career pathways and outcomes

Certificate IV graduates are qualified to ride as licensed apprentice jockeys, competing at race meetings under the guidance of their employing trainer, with the goal of progressing to a full professional jockey's licence. Beyond race riding, the skills developed through this qualification also support careers as senior trackwork riders, riding for leading stables on race-fit gallopers; jockey mentors and coaches, developing the next generation of riders; and race-day and industry roles across racing operations, media and stewarding. Upon completion individuals may also choose to pursue further education and training within the racing industry.

Completing this qualification opens up opportunities for further study and career progression in the horse racing industry, including:

• RGR40118 Certificate IV in Racing (Racehorse Trainer) – a common pathway for jockeys transitioning from the saddle into a training career, building on their deep knowledge of horses and race preparation.
• RGR30419 Certificate III in Racing Services (Cadet Steward) – for individuals interested in moving into stewarding and integrity roles after their riding career.

Fees

Course fees are determined based on the student’s enrolment pathway, funding eligibility (where applicable) and the qualification being undertaken. 
 
 Where government-funded training is available, student contributions and any applicable concession arrangements will be applied in accordance with the relevant funding program requirements.
 
 Students who are not eligible for government funding will be enrolled under a fee-for-service arrangement.
