Racing Queensland is encouraging clubs to consider applying for the 2020 Supplementary Volunteer Grants.

The grants aim to strengthen community functioning by increasing participation in volunteering.

Queensland community organisations who are comprised of a high proportion of volunteers (over 40%) will be able to apply for small grants of between $1,000 and $5,000 with the aim to achieve one or more of the following:

  • Help support the efforts of Australia’s volunteers;
  • Help support the inclusion of vulnerable people through volunteering;
  • Encourage, support and increase participation in volunteering;
  • Re-engage their volunteers as the economy re-opens; and
  • Adapt their practices to support their volunteers’ safety in relation to coronavirus.

The key requirement for eligibility is that at least 40% of your organisation’s workforce must be volunteers.

The Australian Government has selected Volunteering Queensland to administer the 2020 Supplementary Volunteer Grants for Queensland.

Clubs that received this grant in the 2019/20 Volunteer Grant round are ineligible to apply in the 2020/21 round.

Eligible clubs can use the small grant program for items and activities that support and benefit the organisation’s volunteers, including:

  • small equipment items
  • transport costs of volunteers with a disability
  • fuel costs incurred by volunteers
  • training for volunteers
  • background screening checks of volunteers
  • post COVID-19 re-engagement activities for volunteers
  • adapting practices to support volunteers’ safety in relation to COVID-19.

This program is not designed to supplement the costs of the club and items will only be eligible for funding if they directly support or benefit your club’s volunteers.

Suggested items for race clubs could include:

  • Contribution to the reimbursement of volunteers’ fuel costs who use their own vehicle when undertaking their volunteering activities.
  • Personal protective equipment for the volunteers i.e. safety equipment for barrier attendants, dog handlers and machinery operators.
  • Personal protective equipment to ensure the safety of your volunteers in the COVID-19 environment, i.e. masks, gloves, hand wash facilities, plastic screens etc.
  • Training courses for volunteers on Safe Animal Handling, Workplace Health and Safety, Dealing with Aggressive Behaviour of Patrons as a result of restrictions due to COVID-19.
  • Re-designing volunteer programs to be suitable in a COVID-19 environment, i.e. purchasing technology so a volunteer can operate remotely or with appropriate physical distancing.
