The first progeny from Captain Crunch offered through the sales ring in Australia headlined the Australian Pacing Gold’s Gold Coast Sale for 2023 on Sunday afternoon at Bundall.

Three yearlings from the champion American sire were sold at the Bundall complex on Sunday, with one of his colts topping the sales.

The colt – out of Soul Sister (pictured above) – was the highest price standardbred to go through the 2023 sale, sold for $100,000 to Queenslander Norm Jenkin.

The top two lots from the annual sale were both QBRED’s.

Lot 13 – seven lots before the Captain Crunch youngster topped the sales – was sold to the Queensland stable of Jack and Tara Butler for $82,500.

The Butlers picked up the colt from another American stallion in Downbytheseaside and out of Samara Crocker.

Australian Pacing Gold’s Client Services and Accounts Manager Anthony Essex was pleased to be able to see one of Captain Crunch’s first foals top the sale.

“We had good support from local buyers – Tara Butler, Darren McCall, Lachie Manzelmann, Paul Galvin, Brittany Graham, Darren Weeks and Grant Dixon, among others,” Essex said.

“We also have strong support from interstate with one purchase finding a home in Tasmania.

“Captain Crunch’s first season sire average was $59,000, which were very happy with.”

The sales topping Captain Crunch colt was sold by vendor Megan Cockburn.

“This is a life changing result for us and along with my sister Kate, we are so pleased we made the decision to support the industry owned sales company that runs the first sale of the year,” Cockburn said.

“The team at APG should be congratulated as should the other consignors and prepares.”

Australian Pacing Gold’s Gold Coast Sale for 2023 showcased a line-up of 36 lots.

A total of 21 lots were sold on Sunday at an average of $41,571.
