Rockhampton Jockey Club’s multi-million-dollar upgrade is now complete following the opening of its new administration building.

The project saw the RJC’s administration building relocated to higher ground after being frequently flooded due to its proximity to the Fitzroy River.

The administration building is part of a $2.3 million upgrade at Callaghan Park, which also included expanded female jockey rooms.

The new female jockey rooms – which were completed in October 2022 – cater for 15 riders.

Racing Minister Grace Grace said the upgrade would deliver enhanced amenities for a region that is a significant contributor to the Queensland racing industry’s footprint.

“The racing industry plays a significant role in the fabric of Rockhampton, and the completion of this project is a positive boost for the Club,” Minister Grace said.

“We’re pleased to be able to provide further flood resilience at Callaghan Park, while also better catering for our ever-expanding female jockey ranks.

“It’s an important upgrade for the Central Queensland region, which contributes more than $60 million to the local economy while providing more than 500 full-time jobs.”

The upgrade comes on the back of another successful Northern Queensland Winter Racing Carnival, which saw local cult hero Master Jamie claim a second successive Rockhampton Cup.

In 2024, Callaghan Park will host the third running of The Archer, Queensland’s first thoroughbred slot race, with $775,000 once again up for grabs in April, and the RJC’s flagship race, the TAB Rockhampton Cup in July.

RJC Chief Executive Officer David Aldred said he is thrilled with the new facilities that have been delivered by the Palaszczuk Government.

“The new administration building will ensure that the Club’s office staff do not have to endure the hardship of future flooding when the Fitzroy breaks its banks,” he said.

“As a result, it will provide a much safer and better working environment.

“The upgrade to the female jockey’s room was long overdue, with a much higher percentage of females riding in races and trials than in years gone by, and we are very fortunate to now have these new high-class facilities at Callaghan Park.”
