McColm considers bid for Far Too Easy's brother

Injuries, floods, wide barriers and just bad luck have dominated Far Too Easy’s racing career so far, but all will be forgotten if the gelding claims the $1 million Magic Millions Cup at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Murwillumbah trainer David McColm is hopeful Far Too Easy can give him his biggest ever pay cheque in the 1400 metre feature.

Far Too Easy was placed in the Ramornie at Grafton, The Kosciusko at Randwick and the Moreton Cup at Eagle Farm at his three starts before a last start win in the Listed Lough Neagh last month.

“He’s been an unlucky horse but he’s had 19 starts and won eight times and almost $1.3 million in prize money, so a lot of people would say we’ve been very lucky,” McColm said.

“He probably should have won considerably more prize money but he’s been sensational for us to win what he has so far.”

McColm dodged a bullet when heavy rain forced the Murwillumbah track to close for track work on Tuesday morning.

“We had a lot of rain on Tuesday for his main piece of work and the track here was closed after it received 130 millimetres, so I put him on a float and worked him at Ballina,” he said.

McColm’s prayers for a suitable barrier draw for Far Too Easy went unanswered when the five-year-old drew a horror barrier in 21 but he will jump from 16 without the emergencies.

“I’m disappointed with the draw and ideally I would have preferred a middle draw,” he said.

“It makes it a bit harder but it could be a blessing in disguise if the track is soft or heavy.”

McColm knows what he will do with the winning prize money if Far Too Easy is successful in the Magic Millions Cup.

“I’ll head straight across the road to the sales later that night and try to buy his full brother which goes under the hammer,” he said.

“I’ve looked at his brother and I really like him but he might be out of my price range.”

McColm was delighted when leading Queensland jockey James Orman elected to ride Far Too Easy in the Magic Millions Cup.

“We had a lot of southern riders ringing for the ride but Jim has stayed with him right through his campaign,” he said.

Far Too Easy was a graduate of the 2020 Gold Coast Magic Millions sales after being knocked down for $45,000 and is raced by McColm, his wife Jude and close friend Don and Mary Wardlaw.
