Winx and Black Caviar elevated to ‘Legend’ status in Australian Racing Hall of Fame
The legacy of two of the greatest thoroughbreds seen on a racetrack will burn even brighter with their elevation to ‘Legend’ status at the upcoming Sportsbet Australian Racing Hall of Fame gala.
The stage is set to honour both Black Caviar and Winx, the champion mares who defined greatness, whose unmatched brilliance lifted racing to unparalleled heights.
Black Caviar, the sprinting powerhouse and undefeated winner of 25 races – including 15 at Group 1 level – was first inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013.
Her flawless career included two TJ Smith Stakes, three Lightning Stakes, two VRC Champion sprints and eclipsed it all with her 2012 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
In a fitting coincidence, Moody will also be inducted into the Hall of Fame in the same ceremony as his equine marvel.
“Black Caviar changed my life,” Moody said on learning of her elevation to ‘Legend’ status.
“Every day, I still think about her and then when Royal Ascot comes around you relive those great memories again.
“(Both Black Caviar and Winx) are both great mares and it was only a matter of time, with all due respect, they were both going to get that honour and deservedly so."
Winx, in her breathtaking and herculean effort won all of her last 33 races and in doing so, captured the hearts of the nation and beyond.
Originally inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017, Winx won an extraordinary four Cox Plates, three Queen Elizabeth Stakes, four George Ryder Stakes, four Chipping Norton Stakes.
Her CV also includes multiple victories in the Turnbull Stakes, the George Main Stakes, and the Winx Stakes named in her honour in 2018.
Aptly, her first Group 1 was the Queensland Oaks.
“She was a high-performance athlete with an amazing amount of talent, She captured the imagination of everyone, here and around the world,” trainer Chris Waller said.
“I always admired Winx’s determination and the uncomplicated way she went about her work and racing.
“She didn’t require any extra fuss. When I talk to people about Winx, there’s nothing but the ultimate respect for her.
“It is fitting she has been elevated to ‘Legend’ status.”
Australian Racing Hall of Fame Chairman Jason Scott echoed the sentiments of the entire Hall of Fame judging committee.
"Black Caviar and Winx are without doubt two of the greatest thoroughbreds this sport has ever witnessed, both here and abroad," Mr Scott said.
"Debate has raged in recent years over which of the two champion mares is the greatest we've seen, however what is certain is that their legacies transcend far beyond the boundaries of racing.
"It's deserving that they both be bestowed 'Legend' status in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame together, befitting of their stature as two of the best we have and will ever have the fortune to see."
The announcement comes after five new inductees into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame were announced last week. They are:
