Origin decider takes a back seat for Capewell

It will be business first for Toowoomba trainer Jake Capewell before he jets out to cheer on his brother Kurt and the Queensland Maroons in the State Of Origin decider against NSW in Sydney on Wednesday night.

Capewell will saddle last start winner Rumbling Away when the gelding heads to Beaudesert on Tuesday for the Class 2 Handicap over 1650 metres.

Capewell's brother Kurt plays for the New Zealand Warriors in the NRL.

Capewell is a highly respected trainer, breaker and pre-trainer on Queensland’s Darling Downs.

While size was the major factor against a league career of his own, Capewell is making his mark in the racing game with a small team at the Bahram training and spelling centre just outside Toowoomba.

“I’ve only got half a dozen horses I train myself but overall, I’ve got 75 horses in work here which I break-in and pre-train for a lot of trainers,” Capewell said.

Capewell has booked Toowoomba apprentice Chloe Lowe to again partner Rumbling Away who is coming off a runaway win at Roma on June 21.

“His last win was very good when he led all the way,” Capewell said.

“He drew wide, but I put blinkers on him for the first time and stepped him up in distance to a more suitable trip.

“I was a bit worried about how he would handle the sand track at Roma but he had no issues.

“If we get a dry track at Beaudesert, he’ll be competitive again.”

Capewell and a big crew of close friends from Charleville and Toowoomba are booked on a flight to Sydney to watch the Origin decider after he returns from his Beaudesert duties.

“It’s been a good ride for Jake to get back into the Queensland side and it was a very proud moment for the family when Queensland won the second game,” Capewell said.

“I missed game two as my fiancé had just given birth to our second child."

Rumbling Away is having only his fifth start for Capewell after his owner Gordon Mocker moved him on from Caloundra when he was trained by Gary Duncan.

“His owner was looking for a change of scenery with him as Caloundra can be a bit of a hustle and bustle place,” Capewell said.

“The set-up at Bahram stud is nice and quiet which suits him.”
