Brown chasing city dream with Paleface Ringo

Warwick trainer Jack Brown has one goal he wants to achieve before pulling the pin on his training career.

“I want to train a Saturday city winner and I think I can do it with Paleface Ringo,” Brown said.

Brown is confident Paleface Ringo can give him his first midweek city winner when the four-year-old tackles the Class 5 Handicap at Doomben on Wednesday.

“I’ve got five horses in the stable including a half-sister to Paleface Ringo by Encryption and that’ll do me until I finish up training,” Brown said.

“I’m 67 now, so I think I’ll stop training in around three years when I’m 70. Life is too short to be wasted.

“Paleface Ringo has been a good horse to me and has won five races for us, and as far as I’m concerned, he’s like a Cox Plate horse to me."

Paleface Ringo gave Brown his last metropolitan winner when he won at Ipswich this time last year.

“There’s one thing I’ve learnt about horses,” he said.

“They have to have the will to win and he’s got it. 

"He’s a real trier.”

Paleface Ringo won consecutive races at Toowoomba and the Gold Coast in May and June before a last start fifth to the Jack Bruce-trained Moshulu Spirit at Ipswich on July 8.

“I thought he could win at Ipswich, but we were held up in roadworks for 50 minutes at Cunningham’s Gap on the way to the track,” Brown said.

“He was a mess and played up in the barriers, which is why he missed the start by five lengths.”

Brown returned to training in March after taking a well-earned three-month break during the summer.

“We’ve had a hard time since we lost our son, Terry, 18 months ago and it’s still a battle, so I bought a caravan and went travelling,” he said.

“We had 10 weeks off on the south coast of Sydney and I didn’t want to come back.”

Brown has been training for around 25 years and was one of several Warwick trainers affected by the storm which flattened the Warwick race club’s facilities in November of 2025.

It took the roof off the Warwick Turf Club’s clubhouse and wreaked havoc on other facilities, including the bookmaker’s ring, forcing Brown to travel to Toowoomba for trackwork.
