RQ welcomes new race starter

Matthew Henderson has been appointed to the role of Race Starter Specialist at Racing Queensland. 

Matthew will play a vital role in shaping the future of racing in Queensland by building the capability of those working behind the barriers.

The new role exists to establish and embed consistent starting procedures for clubs across the state, and to train and empower those responsible for the commencement of races. 

Matthew commences at RQ having previously worked as Ciaron Maher Racing’s Farm Manager at Bong Bong. 

Prior to that, Matthew worked in a number of operations roles at both Archer Park and Racing Queensland, which included raceday management of starters and judges.

“It’s fantastic to welcome someone of Matt’s experience and reputation back to Racing Queensland – an appointment that I’m sure will be well received by many trainers, jockeys and clubs,” RQ EGM Racing David Brick said.

“Efficient, consistent and safe race starts are critically important to the conduct of any race meeting, and this role will ensure continuous improvement of this function.

“In addition to the development of race starters and associated processes, Matt’s expertise and knowledge will be of benefit in implementing barrier attendant accreditation and training as part of The Next Lap’s commitment.”

A former Head Starter and trackwork supervisor at the Australian Jockey Club, Matthew returns to RQ with close to 40 years’ experience in the industry across three states. 

“I’m delighted to have been appointed to this role with Racing Queensland and am really looking forward to making a difference in this crucially important area,” Henderson said.

“I’m under no illusion that there will be challenges faced along the journey, however the opportunity to work with clubs, participants and all stakeholders in a field I have a real passion for is exciting.”
