Believer Wright backs The Right Way

It will be one for the true believers if The Right Way wins the Toowoomba Cup on Saturday.

The Right Way is trained at Gatton by former Kiwi Greg Wright, who moved to Australia six years ago.

A former aluminium smelter worker, Wright trains as a hobby and has three horses in work.

“I came from Winton on New Zealand’s South Island and I trained 35 winners before I came here about six years ago,” Wright said.

“I’ve been training for about 30 years and I used to work in an aluminium smelter for about 20 years.

“I quit my job and moved over here as Dad had a house at Caloundra and my sister, Stephanie, lived on the Gold Coast.

“I’ve got a property near Gatton, which has a training track and I can also go into Gatton for trackwork.”

The Right Way was a cheap buy for Wright’s father Alister, who shares his time living in New Zealand and Queensland.

“Dad splits his time between here and New Zealand,” Wright said.

“He comes here to live in New Zealand’s winter and goes back to live over there in our summer.

“The Right Way was a late foal and was quite small early on, so he never went to the sales when Dad bought him.

“Since then, he’s really grown and he’s now 17.1 hands and is very athletic.”

Wright’s biggest win since coming to Australia was with The Right Way in the Provincial Stayers Final at Ipswich in June of last year.

The Right Way hasn’t won since claiming a Benchmark race at Eagle Farm in August of last year, but the lack of success doesn’t concern Wright.

“He’s only been beaten a couple of lengths in a lot of his races and his worst run was in the Brisbane Cup during the winter when he failed on a heavy track,” Wright said.

“The only runner he beat home in the Brisbane Cup was Bozo, who won the New Zealand Cup last year on a heavy track.”

Wright is hoping The Right Way’s love for Toowoomba’s Clifford Park will be an advantage.

“He’s in good order although his form line doesn’t suggest it,” Wright said.

“He only beat one home at his last start at Doomben, but the race didn’t pan out the way we had hoped.

“He’s got a good record at Toowoomba with four wins, two seconds and two fourths and one of those fourths was in last year’s Toowoomba Cup.

“He’s at long odds, but he’ll give a lot of cheek.”
