SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

Race 5:Bluff-Blackwater Race Club 4 July 2026

Stewards inquired into the riding tactics adopted by apprentice J Miller on CAFFREY over the final 350m and whether there was an opportunity to avail himself of a run to the inside of runners prior to switching wider to the outside of CASH ARTIST leaving the 200m. Apprentice Miller, in the presence of his master, trainer B Johnson, advised that during the middle stages CAFFREY travelled strongly and leaving the 400m was held up to the inside of runners that were commencing to give ground and to shift wider at that point he would have had to restrain his mount significantly and likely lose momentum. Apprentice Miller further stated that entering the home straight he contemplated taking a run between TAVANASIA (NZ) and ALL BUSINESS (NZ) however did not feel there was sufficient room when ALL BUSINESS (NZ) shifted inwards under pressure, so he elected to shift out across the heels of that runner. Mr Miller then added, once he had committed to shift around ALL BUSINESS (NZ), CASH ARTIST had shifted inwards marginally and felt a further shift from that runner would result in insufficient room to take a run safely so elected to switch to the outside of CASH ARTIST. When considering the explanation provided by the rider, the racing characteristics of the runners in the race and relative race riding inexperience of apprentice Miller, stewards could not be satisfied that the decisions made and tactics adopted by the rider were so unreasonable that they warranted further action being taken.

RACE 2: BARCALDINE RACING CLUB QTIS CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1200 M

Correct weight was delayed to allow stewards to consider a protest lodged by apprentice K Barker, rider of third placed TELL US TOLL, against the second placed SMASHING ROSIE (A Meissner) alleging interference over the final 200m. After considering the evidence provided by connections of the respective horses, viewing the available replays and taking into account stewards own observations it was established, in the early part of the home straight SMASHING ROSIE shifted out in advance of TELL US TOLL when clear to do so and then near the 50m, TELL US TOLL appeared to race in tight confines for a few strides when between YOU KAY SQUEEZE and SMASHING ROSIE, however on the available replays stewards were unable to identify a shift by any specific runner therefore could not be satisfied that there was sufficient supportive evidence of interference to overturn the judges placing and so the protest was dismissed.
