SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

Stewards concluded their enquiries into the nomination, acceptance, and scratching of KICK AND RUN from Race 7, Class 1 Plate 2150m. Stewards considered evidence from trainer C. Zintilis, owner Ms D. Griffiths, which confirmed KICK AND RUN’S pre-training and training program leading up to the race meeting, along with Steward’s observations of KICK AND RUN, which was plated and in race condition. Stewards subsequently accepted the explanations and took no further action other than to reiterate to trainer C. Zintilis the provisions of LR38 regarding nominations solely to affect the numbers of horses available for a race.
RACE 1: MASTERFOODS CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1090 metres
ITALIAN VIRTUOSO – Shifted in on jumping and bumped DAUNTING INSTINCT. Raced wide throughout.
KING INVINCIBLE (NZ) – When asked to comment on the performance, rider N. Day stated the gelding never travelled comfortably during the race and was not suited to today’s track surface.
HEAVY REIGN – Rider K. Gates stated that her mount was inclined to hang out over the final 100m and placed her at a disadvantage in being able to ride her mount out fully to the end of the race.
PLAYFUL PASSION – Laid in under pressure in the home straight and leaving the 100m, was steadied away from the heels of FRENCH WISH.
DAUNTING INSTINCT – Began awkwardly and inconvenienced a short distance later.
FRENCH WISH – Stewards noted apprentice K. Barker exceeded the permitted strikes of the whip prior to the 100m (+3) under AR132(7)(a)(ii), however given the totality of whip use, no action was taken.
RACE 2: INGHAM'S RATINGS BAND 0 - 60 HANDICAP 850 metres
AMPHAWA – Laid in under pressure in the home straight and proved difficult to ride over the final 100m.
ENFLAMED – Hung out when under pressure in the home straight. When questioned regarding tactics adopted and her riding in the home straight, rider M. Kennedy advised her instructions were to be on speed, that her mount travelled well in the early stages, however began to hang out significantly in the home straight and proved difficult to ride out over the final 150m. Stewards accepted the explanation tendered. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Trainer W. Baker was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding for hanging out.
LEVAR – Blundered on jumping away.
NINE CIGARS – Trainer B. Gill was reprimanded pursuant to AR 106(2) for presenting NINE CIGARS to the mounting yard with the incorrect gear. Began awkwardly.
BOITUMELO – Began awkwardly.
RACE 3: PRIMO FOODS MAIDEN PLATE 1212 metres
SHUBMAN – Hung out approaching and rounding the home turn. Apprentice rider K. Johnston reported that her mount resented the kickback and hung out during the event, adding she was of the opinion the gelding would benefit from racing over longer distances. Trainer B. Gill was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding for hanging out.
OVERTERN - Rider M. Kennedy reported her mount travelled comfortably however failed to respond to her riding in the home straight. Trainer B. Mair advised that it was now the intention to retire the mare.
SECRET CAVIAR – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination after contacting the enclosure gate and was subsequently passed fit to start. Began awkwardly and lost ground.
SEWN UP – Began awkwardly, contacting the barrier partition. Raced wide throughout.
RACE 4: PACIFIC WEST OPEN HANDICAP 1090 metres
CORKSCREW was declared a late withdrawal on veterinary advice at 3:49pm after rearing over, dislodging rider A. Spinks and contacting the enclosure fence.
On the declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered all bets on CORKSCREW be refunded in full with the following deductions to apply:
1st – SEA COMMITS – 9c win, 11c place.
2nd – CITY CHICK – 9c place.
3rd - SVINDAL – 11c place.
Trainer G. Klem was advised that CORKSCREW would be required to trial to the Stewards satisfaction, inclusive of a pre-trial parade under race conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed superficial abrasions to the tail base and both hind legs with CORKSCREW being treated by the oncourse veterinarian. Rider A. Spinks sustained a harmless fall in this incident and did not require medical assessment.
SVINDAL – Slow to begin. Raced wide throughout.
CITY CHICK – Raced wide throughout. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
JAMESATELLI – Began awkwardly. Shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages.
HEAT – As apprentice J. Busuttin was unable to make the allotted weight, she was replaced by rider M. Butler when no apprentice riders were available. Apprentice J. Busuttin was subsequently fined $300 pursuant to AR190(3) for accepting a ride when overweight. Began awkwardly. Steadied over the concluding stages when JAMESATELLI shifted out.
HURRICANE HALL – Slow to begin. When asked to comment on the performance, apprentice K. Johnston stated that the gelding travelled well to the home turn, however did not respond as anticipated and felt that a step up to open company today had a bearing on the performance.
SEA COMMITS – Began awkwardly.
RACE 5: RUM CITY FOODS QTIS BENCHMARK 55 HANDICAP 1380 metres
BANDIT – Bumped at the start. Inclined to lay out under pressure in the home straight.
BOOM BOOM BELLA – Bumped at the start. Raced wide without cover throughout.
TIZSO FAB – Shifted in on jumping. When asked to comment on the performance, apprentice J. Busuttin stated that her mount was never comfortable on today’s track surface and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.
JUST BINGO - On arrival at the barriers, underwent a veterinary examination after making contact with the enclosure gate and was cleared to start. Shifted out on jumping and bumped BANDIT which in turn bumped BOOM BOOM BELLA.
CULTURAL SPIRIT – Raced keenly in the early stages.
YAMUMZA – Slow to begin. Rider M. Kennedy was reminded of her obligations under AR131(b) to ride her mounts out to the end of the race.
