Stewards approved the following overweights at today’s meeting:
Race 5. S. Cormack +1kg

RACE 1.  ROMA & ESK JULY 11 QTIS THREE-YEARS-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP 1650 Metres
 
MEANER THAN MOST – Slow to begin. Near the 400m, bumped with MR RACING and shortly thereafter was steadied when awkwardly placed at the heels of STEADY ON. 
 
WEEKEND SPIRIT – Began awkwardly and bumped HAPPY COFFEE. Taken wider rounding the home turn.
 
BOOMTOWN LADDIE – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Jockey A. Thompson reported his mount was inclined to hang out throughout, proving difficult to control. Stewards inquired into the strike of Jockey A. Thompson whip on BOOMTOWN LADDIE near the 900m. Jockey A. Thompson explained the gelding had been hanging out severely throughout the race and approaching the 900m, the bit had pulled through horse’s mouth and he was of the strong belief the gelding was going to run off the track. He said as he had concerns of his own safety and the safety of others around him, he attempted to strike the bit of the horse with his whip, however made contact with the geldings head in the process. Subsequently, Jockey A. Thompson was found guilty of a charge pursuant to AR132(6)(a) in that near the 900m he used his whip in the vicinity of the gelding’s head and was fined $200. In issuing penalty, Stewards noted the racing manners of his mount, his clean record in relation to this rule and that could have exercised other options before striking the horse in the head. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be coughing. Trainer J. Edwards was advised that BOOMTOWN LADDIE will require a veterinary clearance inclusive of an endoscopic examination prior to racing or trialing again. In addition, Mr Edwards was advised the gelding must officially trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to resuming due to its racing manners.
 
MR RACING – Slow to begin.
 
STEADY ON – Raced keenly in the early stages.
 
BASSETT'S CHOICE – Began awkwardly. Raced ungenerously in the early stages. Laid out rounding the home turn.
 
HAPPY COFFEE – Near the 1300m, momentarily raced in restricted room and was steadied when BOOMTOWN LADDIE shifted out abruptly. Laid out under pressure in the home straight.

 
RACE 2.  INGHAM RACES JULY 11 QTIS TWO-YEARS-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP 1200 Metres
 
CATFISH – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination on arrival at the barriers after knocking a cap off a tooth and was cleared to start. Raced wide throughout.
 
BY FORCE – Held up for clear running on entering the home straight. Held up near the 50m before shifting out and becoming awkwardly placed at the heels of DOMINATOR, and as a result went to the line without being fully tested.
 
NOZOMU – Declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 12:24pm after becoming cast in the tie-up stalls. Trainer D. Chujo was advised the colt will require a veterinary clearance prior to resuming racing or trialling.
 
COMICAL BELLE – Failed to muster speed in the early and middle stages. Trailed the field throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer P. Wallace was advised that COMICAL BELLE will be required to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to next racing.
 
MISS INFORMED – Slow to begin. Leaving the 50m, steadied and taken wider by BY FORCE (A. Thompson) which shifted out when insufficiently clear. Jockey A. Thompson was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR131(a) for careless riding in this incident.
 
JASMINTINA – Raced wide throughout.
 
MISHANI RAINFIRE – Raced keenly in the early stages. Momentarily held up for clear running on entering the home straight.
 
Following the running of this race, Jockey A. Thompson was examined by QAS after aggravating a previous injury in his left hand and was stood down from his remaining engagement. Jockey Thompson was advised he would require a medical clearance prior to next riding.
 

RACE 3.  ILFRACOMBE PICNIC RACE CLUB JULY 11 MAIDEN HANDICAP 1100 Metres
 
BAY OF THE SOUTH – Began awkwardly and bumped with KING’S COIN.
 
KING'S COIN – Bumped on jumping. Near the 900m, was steadied when racing in restricted room to the inside of BAY OF THE SOUTH which laid in and away from LUMINOUS GIRL. Approaching the winning post, raced in restricted room between SHOWN THE DOOR and MAGNETIC ISLAND which shifted out marginally.
 
MAGNETIC ISLAND – Trainer V. Heading was reprimanded pursuant to AR106(2) for presenting the mare without winkers.
 
MAJOR HOT – Near the 900m, raced in restricted room and became awkward on the heels of MAGNETIC ISLAND. Held up rounding the home turn before shifting in near the 200m to obtain clear running.
 
LUMINOUS GIRL – Trainer J. Bruce was reprimanded pursuant to AR106(2) for presenting the filly without blinkers.
 
THE BLUE SWAN LAKE – Raced greenly in the early stages.
 
 
RACE 4. THANGOOL RACE CLUB JULY 18 FILLIES AND MARES CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1200 Metres
 
CAT EMPIRE – Began awkwardly, tightened for room and lost ground.
 
SNUGG – Began awkwardly. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
LEBANESE – Began awkwardly. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
MYSTICAL GEM – Raced keenly in the early stages.
 
SEQUEL – Raced keenly in the early stages.
 
SHEDRIVESABENTLEY – Began awkwardly. 
 
PRIVATE SHOWTIME – Slow to begin.

 
RACE 5: HUGHENDAN JOCKEY CLUB JULY 18 COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES CLASS 2 HCP 1200 Metres
 
STATEMENT OF TRUTH – Jockey D. Peisley was fined $100 pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(i) for using his whip on consecutive strides prior to the 100m.  
 
SMART 'N' STYLISH – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils on the first occasion. Trainer P. Wallace was advised of the provisions of AR79(4).      
 
ZOUSLAYER – Slow to begin.
 
STANDLEE – Near the 350m, laid in and became awkward on the heels of KOOL BRUCE. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. 
 
KOOL BRUCE – Over raced in the early and middle stages.
 

RACE 6: GYMPIE TURF CLUB JULY 18 BM65 HANDICAP 2450 Metres
 
WEONA REDWOOD (NZ) – Laid in rounding the home turn.
 
DEMARCAY (GB) – Shifted out under pressure over the final 50m.
 
NOTABADJACKUP (NZ) – Raced wide until the 1400m.
 
SCOTTISH PEARL (IRE) – Began awkwardly. Held up for clear running from the 400m until approaching the 300m.
 
PENDING LIST – Improved onto heels near the 1100m and had to be steadied.
 
SUNNY DISPOSITION – Raced wide throughout.
 
PAPAL MISS – Improved onto heels near the 1100m and had to be steadied.
 
BORN TO BE ALIVE – Weakened from the 400m. When asked to comment, jockey K. Zechner reported the gelding is better suited to tracks with more give in them. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer A. Chau agreed with Jockey K. Zechner that the gelding isn’t suited to firmer tracks, and his intention going forward is to race the gelding on soft or heavy surfaces. Stewards advised trainer A. Chau that due to the performance today, the gelding would not be permitted to start on good 4 surfaces or firmer.
 
YOU THINK SO – Held up for clear running from the 500m until the 300m.
 
SMELTER (IRE) – Obliged to alter course on entering the home straight. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, Jockey F. Larson advised it wasn’t his intention to settle as far back, however the gelding failed to muster speed, so he was obliged to settle at the rear of the field. He added that the gelding never travelled in the early and middle stages, however approaching the 500m, responded to his urgings and finished the race off well.
