Race 2: TROPIC PETROLEUM QTIS BENCHMARK 50 Handicap 1000M
YELLOWSTONE BETH – Stood flat-footed at the start and lost ground. Rider Micheal McDonald was harmlessly dislodged on return to the mounting enclosure following the event. When questioned on the performance, rider Micheal Mcdonald stated that after being slow to begin at the start he elected to let the mare settle well back at the tail of the field as was the mares usual racing pattern and added that YELLOWSTONE BETH finished the race off strongly. Rider McDonald further stated that the mare would derive benefit from today’s race and would be better suited to races over a longer distance.
HIGHGROUND – Fractious in the barriers prior to the start.
BITONTHESIDE – Slow into stride. Had to be restrained passing the 600 metres. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.

Race 3: CORELLA CATTLE COMPANY BENCHMARK 65 Handicap 1000M

Stewards noted rider David Sparks exceeded the permitted strikes of the whip prior to the 100m (+2) under AR132(7)(a)(ii); however, given the totality of the whip use, no further action was taken. When questioned regarding the riding tactics adopted today, rider David Sparks stated that after drawing an outside barrier RESTRICTIONS was caught wide and he elected to push forward to obtain a forward position. Rider Sparks advised that in hindsight, it may have been more advantageous to restrain and obtain cover prior to entering the home straight. Stewards noted the explanation, however, advised rider Sparks that he must consider all options available when the issued instructions or tactics do not eventuate. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities.
GARDENEZIO – Raced wide throughout.
AURA GOLD – Bumped with RESTRICTIONS shortly after the start. Raced wide throughout.
OLIGARCHY – Laid in rounding the first corner. Gave ground over the concluding stages. When questioned on the performance, rider Denicious Smith stated after racing wide throughout from a wide barrier, the gelding was under pressure on entering the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed signs of a pre-existing thickening of the suspensory ligament.

DEEP BREATH – Laid in under pressure in the early part of the home straight.
OCEAN EMPEROR – Raced wide throughout.
