RACE 1: SKY RACING QTIS 2YO C&G H’CAP – 1050M
ITZ ALRITE – Jumped awkwardly, shifted in and brushed PRINCE OF FLINDERS.
LITTLE BIT NIFTY – Slipped in the enclosure when J. Orman mounted, examined by the veterinary surgeon after completing its preliminary and arriving at the barriers and cleared to race. Had to be checked when momentarily tightened for room when racing greenly approaching the 800m. At a subsequent inquiry it was established that LITTLE BIT NIFTY was momentarily tightened at that stage when PRINCE OF FLINDERS was taken inwards slightly by MONEY TALK, which also had a tendency to overrace and was taken in slightly by MISHANI SLEUTH, which shifted in when being restrained. Stewards could not apportion blame for this incident to any one rider and no direct action was taken, however G. Colless, the rider of MISHANI SLEUTH, was advised that when attempting to ride forward to a position outside the leader to ensure he does not restrain his mounts prior to clearing riders to his inside. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be slightly shin sore in both forelegs. Trainer K. Kemp advised that the horse would be sent for a spell.
MONEY TALK – When overracing after passing the 700m clipped the heels of MISHANI SLEUTH and blundered, then continued to overrace for some distance following this incident.
THE REAL RONALDO – Jumped awkwardly.
JANDAMA – Raced three wide without cover throughout.
RACE 2: GIRLS DAY OUT RACEDAY OPEN H’CAP – 2200M
VOLKHERE – Slow to begin. Trainer R. Heathcote advised that in light of today’s performance the horse would be sent for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be slightly sore over the offside rump.
HOT SAGA – Slow to begin. Had to be checked to avoid heels passing the winning post on the first occasion.
OUR BOY NICHOLAS – Slow to begin. When questioned as to why the horse settled in a forward position, which is contrary to its normal racing pattern, P. Hammersley stated that he had no specific instructions other than to ride the horse where it was comfortable and to not take cover immediately after the start. Jockey Hammersley added that the horse had been travelling comfortably when racing outside of VOLKHERE so he elected to allow it to stride forward. Stewards noted his explanation.
UNO FIVE – Checked after passing the winning post on the first occasion when tightened for room by ONGOING VENTURE, which was taken in by AWARD SEASON which was taken in when VOLKHERE shifted in. D. Browne, the rider of VOLKHERE, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of AWARD SEASON. D. Browne’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 9 days, to commence at midnight on Sunday 31 January and expire at midnight on Tuesday 9 February 2016.
ANTON EN AVANT – Tightened for room passing the 600m between UNO FIVE and HOT SAGA, both of which shifted ground. Apprentice C. Schmidt was fined $300 for using the whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m.
