GENERAL
Trainer P. Jenkins was fined $100 under LR67(1) for the late declaration of Apprentice C. Sutherland as the rider of HOLY FLASH in Race 6.
RACE 1:SPRING CARNIVAL BOOK NOW BENCHMARK 85 HANDICAP 1615 M
THIS'LLBETHEONE – Blundered on jumping away and lost ground. Race wide until passing the 800m. Passing the 250m, laid in and became awkwardly placed on the heels of MENAZZI.
YET HE MOVES – Slow to begin. Held up for clear running on entering the home straight. Raced in restricted room for a short distance approaching the 300m between THIS'LLBETHEONE and SUPER DUCK, which laid in under pressure.
SPORTING CHANCE – Over-raced in the middle stages.
SUPER DUCK – Began awkwardly. Leaving the 800m, had to be restrained after improving onto the heels of THIS'LLBETHEONE. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
NORTHERN DECREE (NZ) – When asked to comment on the performance of NORTHERN DECREE (NZ), Jockey B. Thompson reported that after being trapped wide in the early stages, he settled further back than expected, however was pleased with the geldings’ finishing efforts.
TOESONTHENOSE (NZ) – Apprentice J. McMurray reported at scale that his saddle slipped passing the 1200m, placing him at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event.
MENAZZI – Laid out under pressure in the home straight.
EXPECTANT – When asked to comment on the performance of EXPECTANT, Apprentice T. Fenlon reported that the gelding had a tendency to over-race early and was disappointing over the concluding stages.
CHASSAGNE – Slow to begin.
RACE 2: EVA AIR OPEN HANDICAP 2020 M
ENCODER – When questioned regarding the performance of ENCODER, Apprentice J. McMurray stated that in his opinion the gelding was not suited to the pace of the race and failed to travel comfortably at any stage, proving disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
THE RIGHT WAY (NZ) – Over-raced in the early and middle stages. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted in today’s event, in particular over the middle stages, Apprentice E. Lang stated that her mount over-raced in the early and middle stages and that it was her intention to to maintain a position at the rear of AGE OF KINGS (IRE) however, after JUST FLYING improved to her outside passing the 1000m, this caused THE RIGHT WAY (NZ) to take charge, forcing the gelding to sustain an extended run which was detrimental to its finishing efforts. A post-race veterinary examination revealed minor abrasions to the off-hind leg.
KETTLE HILL (GB) – Connections advised of a change of tactics in that KETTLE HILL (GB) would attempt to settle with cover if circumstances permit. Ridden accordingly. Passing the 1200m, had to be restrained after improving onto heels when the pace of the race slackened.
AGE OF KINGS (IRE) – When questioned regarding the gelding leading in today’s event, Jockey J. Bayliss advised that he was instructed to settle in a midfield position, however after beginning well and his mount having a tendency to over-race previously, rather than attempting to restrain his AGE OF KINGS (IRE), he elected to allow the gelding to lead in today’s event.
JUST FLYING – Passing the 1000m when the pace of the race slackened, was forced to shift wide to avoid the heels of THE RIGHT WAY (NZ), which was being restrained and as a result raced wide for the remainder. Apprentice E. Lang was reminded of her obligations regarding excessively slowing the pace of the race.
RACE 3: SKY RACING BENCHMARK 78 HANDICAP 2200 M
PIGGYBACK – Laid in in the early part of the home straight.
CONNECTICUT – Over-raced in the middle stages. Held up for clear running on entering the home straight and had to shift out to secure clear running.
ARTFUL GIRL – Passing the winning post on the first occasion, had to be checked to avoid the heels of AKKADIAN EMPEROR (IRE), which shifted in when insufficiently clear to do so. Jockey H. Van Der Hoven the rider of AKKADIAN EMPEROR (IRE), was found guilty pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding, in that he allowed his mount to shift ground when insufficiently clear. Jockey H. Van Der Hoven’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 10 days, commencing midnight the 6th of September and concluding midnight the 16th of September. Jockey H. Van Der Hoven was advised of his right of appeal. Passing the 800m had to be steadied after improving on to heels.
AKKADIAN EMPEROR (IRE) – Connections advised of a change of tactics in that AKKADIAN EMPEROR (IRE) would attempt to settle more forward if circumstances permit. Ridden accordingly.
NAVILLUS HELLFIRE– Following today’s disappointing performance, Trainer V. Heading was advised that NAVILLUS HELLFIREwould be stood down from metropolitan races until such time its form improves to the requisite standards.
RACE 4: XXXX QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD HANDICAP 1200 M
SUNRAYS – Began awkwardly and shifted in on jumping away. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted in today’s event, in particular SUNRAYS settling in a leading position, Apprentice E. Lang reported that from a wide barrier, she elected to go forward rather than be caught three wide. Trainer K. Schweida further added that after resuming from a spell, he was not disappointed to see the filly settle on the pace in a small field rather than be restrained early.
SEVEER – Passing the 800m, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of IMPERVIOUS, which shifted in to take up a position closer to the running rail. Jockey A. Jones, the rider of IMPERVIOUS, advised to exercise greater care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
IMPERVIOUS – Contacted the rail leaving the mounting yard. Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination behind the barriers and was cleared to start.
STATEMENT OF TRUTH – Began awkwardly.
WISNIERSKA – Laid in in the early part of the home straight and became awkwardly placed on the heels of STATEMENT OF TRUTH.
EXOSTOVA – Over-raced in the middle stages.
RACE 5: CRICKS HIGHWAY BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP 1615 M
EXCEED SPEED – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
MERCHANT FLYER – Bumped on jumping away.
SECOND SUN – Raced wide in the early and middle stages.
START STRUTTING – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
MAKE A CALL – Had difficulty obtaining clear running on entering the home straight and was obliged to shift out to improve.
KICKATINALONG – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped MERCHANT FLYER. When questioned regarding the performance of KICKATINALONG, Apprentice C. Collis reported that in his opinion, the mare did not appreciate the step up in distance of today’s event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Co-Trainer T. Sears was advised to report back on the mares condition in the subsequent days.
WOWZINO (NZ) – Over-raced in the early stages when being restrained to take up a position at the rear of the field. Continued to over-race in the middle stages.
RACE 6 - PONTING WINES CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1350 M
LUDOVISI – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped MOSTRO. Passing the 1000m had to be steadied after improving onto heels when the pace of the race slackened.
FOUR ACE – Slow to begin. Over-raced in the middle stages.
VORACIOUS – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
AMERICAN PHIREBALL – Underwent a pre-race veterinary inspection after resuming from an extended spell and was cleared to start. Began awkwardly, shifted out abruptly and bumped with SHELSTEIN. Shortly after the start had to be steadied to avoid the heels of SHELSTEIN which was ridden hard after being slow to begin, to take up a position to the inside of VORACIOUS, resulting in AMERICAN PHIREBALL having to be steadied. Passing the 300m, was obliged to steady when racing in restricted room for a short distance.
HOLY FLASH – Had difficulty obtaining clear running passing the 250m and had to shift out.
JOPPA LANE – Approaching the 900m had to be steadied after improving onto heels.
SHELSTEIN – Bumped on jumping away and lost ground. Passing the 1000m had to be steadied after improving onto heels when the pace of the race slackened. Held up for clear running on entering the home straight. Passing the 250m, was momentarily inconvenienced when attempting to improve into a run between FOUR ACE and MOSTRO. Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester dropped his whip near the 100m.
MOSTRO – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped LUDOVISI.
RACE 7 - U&U RECRUITMENT BENCHMARK 90 HANDICAP 1200 M
GOLDSBOROUGH (NZ) – Blundered on jumping away. Bumped on entering the home straight by BUNKER HUT (NZ) which shifted out to improve. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages and passing the 50m was obliged to shift wider to avoid the heels of STREET CHASE, which shifted out. Jockey B. Thompson the rider of STREET CHASE was advised to exercise greater care when shifting ground.
KA BLING – Bumped and lost ground at the start.
SPACE TRACKER (IRE) – Began awkwardly. Momentarily inconvenienced on entering the home straight and was obliged to shift in to avoid the heels of BUNKER HUT (NZ), which shifted out to improve. Apprentice J. McMurray the rider of BUNKER HUT (NZ) was advised to exercise greater care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
NASHIRA – Began awkwardly. At a point approaching the 800m, made the turn awkwardly and shifted out. Over-raced in the middle stages. Shortly after straightening became awkward in its action, before again, passing the 200m, put in another awkward stride before being restrained out of the race. Jockey J. Bayliss reported at scale that he became concerned with the gelding’s action in the home straight and as a result elected not to ride his mount out to the finishing line. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer M. Hoysted advised that NASHIRA would undergo further examination by their stable veterinarian and would report back on the condition of the gelding in the subsequent days. Trainer M. Hoysted was advised that NASHIRA would now be required to officially trial prior to racing again.
STREET CHASE – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped KA BLING. Momentarily inconvenienced passing the 150m by BUNKER HUT (NZ), which shifted in under riding. When asked to comment on the performance of STREET CHASE, Jockey B. Thompson reported that from a wide barrier STREET CHASE was obliged to make use of his mount in the early stages which was detrimental to its finishing efforts. He further added that in his opinion the gelding would derive fitness benefit from today’s event.
RACE 8: BUNDABERG RUM CLASS 6 PLATE 1350 M
VIMINELE – Stood flat footed as the start was effected and lost significant ground. Had to be pressured in the early stages to make contact with the field. Trainer L. Gough was advised that the gelding would now be required to gain a further barrier certificate prior to racing again.
WEIGALL TIGER – Connections advised of a change of tactics in that WEIGALL TIGER would attempt to settle midfield if circumstances permit. Apprentice C. Sutherland confirmed the instructions and stated that after beginning well, he found himself racing in a leading position and rather than restraining his mount to take up a midfield position, he allowed WEIGALL TIGER to stride forward and settle outside the lead.
LITTLE BEGINNINGS – Jockey A. Mallyon reported at scale that from a wide barrier and after only jumping fairly, he settled further back than anticipated.
SUBSTANTIAL (GB)- Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.
BILLIONAIR BABY – Whilst racing in restricted room passing the 600m, had to be restrained after improving onto heels.
CASPERNOVA – Jockey J. Bayliss reported at scale that his mount raced fresh and with the addition of blinkers first time, his mount failed to settle at any stage of the event. Trainer’s representative J. Coetzee commented that whilst the gelding did over-race he attributed that to not having raced since the 9th of August and moderate tempo in today’s event and at this stage it would be unlikely that he would make any gear adjustments.
YOSHINO – Over-raced in the middle stages and passing the 600m became awkward at the heels of CASPERNOVA, which was being restrained whilst over-racing.
RACE 9: LADBROKES MATES MODE POTS BENCHMARK 78 HANDICAP
1200M
ABOUT TO EXPLODE – Hampered on jumping away.
DAYTONA – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Raced wide.
GOSPEL GIRL – Hampered on jumping away.
ALDOLFITO – Difficulty obtaining clear running on entering the home straight until passing the 200m.
BONDED AFFAIR – Raced wide.
BRIGHT BLONDE – Shifted out on jumping away and bumped ABOUT TO EXPLODE. Over-raced in the early and middle stages. Momentarily held up for clear running passing the 200m and was obliged to shift wider to improve. When asked to comment on the performance of BRIGHT BLONDE, Jockey C. Graham reported that her mount over-raced in the early and middle stages, which in her opinion was detrimental to its finishing efforts.
DEFERENTIAL – Raced wide.
