GENERAL
Stewards permitted the following overweights:
Race 2: R. Hutchings +0.5kg (56kg)
Race 7: D. Moor +0.5kg (56.5kg)
Trainer M. Wilson was fined $100 pursuant to LR 68(1) for failing to scratch STRENUOUS from Race 2 by the prescribed time.
As Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester became indisposed, he was replaced as per the race day summary.
RACE 1: INSUREBUILD FILLIES AND MARES MAIDEN PLATE 1200 M
FARNESINA – Bumped on jumping away.
VALOUROUS COMMAND – Slow to begin. Near the 900m, steadied from heels.
WINNING EDITION – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped FARNESINA.
MOON JEWEL – Began awkwardly. Bumped near the 200m when SEQUEL shifted out to improve. When questioned regarding the performance of MOON JEWEL, Apprentice J. McMurray stated that the filly was difficult to settle prior to the start of the race, which may have attributed to MOON JEWEL’s disappointing performance.
OUR GIRL SCARLETT – Began awkwardly.
SEQUEL - Connections advised of a change of tactics in that SEQUEL will attempt to settle further forward. Ridden accordingly. Bumped on jumping away. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn until the 200m. Inclined to lay out under pressure over the final 200m.
SHORTCUT – Slow to begin. Near the 900m, steadied from the heels of OUR BRAVE LINI which shifted out slightly after making the turn awkwardly.
RACE 2: PIRCSA COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES MAIDEN PLATE 1200 M
EXPRESS STAR – Began awkwardly. Raced greenly leaving the 100m and brushed with EXCEEDINGLY BRAZEN when shifting out to obtain clear running.
STABILIZER – Connections advised of a change of tactics in that STABILIZER would attempt to settle midfield with cover. Settled at the rear of the field. Improved onto heels near the 650m and had to be steadied. Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight.
ARMES – Began awkwardly. Jockey B. Thompson reported at scale that his mount was inclined to lay in throughout. Raced wide early. Obliged to straighten his mount approaching the winning post.
CROCODILE PIE – Began awkwardly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled bilaterally on the first occasion. Trainer K. Schweida was advised CROCODILE PIE would be stood down from racing under AR79 (4) for 3 months and must officially trial, jump out or gallop 1000m satisfactorily, in the presence of a Steward prior to racing again.
EXCEEDINGLY BRAZEN – Bumped with SWAG shortly after the start. Raced wide early.
ODIN'S MOUNT – Became fractious in the barriers. Jockey D. Moor reported at scale that he was satisfied where the gelding settled in running however, was disappointed with its finishing efforts.
SWAG – Bumped with EXCEEDINGLY BRAZEN shortly after the start.
RACE 3: STEAMATIC QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP 1200 M
I SAY I SAY – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped TILIA. Shorty after the start, commenced to over-race and had to be steadied from heels, before continuing to over-race, proving difficult to settle. Weakened over the concluding stages. When asked to comment on the performance of I SAY I SAY, Jockey D. Thornton reported that his mount raced ungenerously throughout which in his opinion had a detrimental effect on the geldings’ finishing efforts. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.
ON POINT PIXIE – Began awkwardly.
TILIA – Bumped and became unbalanced at the start and shortly after had to be steadied to avoid the heels of ON POINT PIXIE, which shifted in. Jockey D. Turner, the rider of ON POINT PIXIE was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding. Over-raced in the early stages.
MISHANI WITNESS – Slow to begin. Raced wide.
RACE 4: EZY PROJECTS BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP 2050 M
MARENARO – Slow to begin.
WINNING SIDE (FR) – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Commenced to over-race early and proved difficult to settle. Near the 1200m, shifted wider and was allowed to stride forward to obtain a leading position passing the 1000m. When asked to comment on the performance of WINNING SIDE (FR), Jockey D. Thornton reported that after over-racing early and having to work hard to obtain a leading position, the mare proved disappointing over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame on its near foreleg. Trainer D. Maher was advised that a veterinary certificate would be required prior to racing again.
WOWZINO (NZ) – Bumped at the start. A post-race veterinary examination revealed heat stress.
TAREX (NZ) – Began awkwardly and shifted in.
MANNERHEIM – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped WOWZINO (NZ).
HARLEY CHARLIE – Trainer T. Thomas was reprimanded pursuant to AR206(3) for presenting HARLEY CHARLIE to the mounting yard with a tongue tie which was not a part of the geldings approved gear. Hampered at the start. Over-raced in the early and middle stages.
RACE 5: NATIONAL LEAK DETECTION BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP 1650 M
HOLY FLASH – Commenced to race keenly approaching the 1000m and improved wider on the course to obtain a position outside the leader near the 800m. Near the 150m, was contacted and taken wider by BIG TICKET BOY, which was shifting out.
AMERICAN PHIREBALL – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Near the 1200m, commenced to over-race and had to be steadied.
BIG TICKET BOY – Hung out throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer L. Gough was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding in relation to its racing manners.
HEREDITARY (NZ) – Began awkwardly and shifted in. Over-raced in the middle stages.
OUTBURST – Slow to begin.
SMART ACTION – Began awkwardly and was hampered at the start. Had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the home straight.
KIND WISH (NZ) – Approaching the winning post improved and became awkwardly placed to the inside of SMART ACTION, which was inclined to shift in under pressure.
KAFFIR LILY – Began awkwardly and shifted in.
IRON GRACE – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Near the 150m was inconvenienced and lost ground when BIG TICKET BOY shifted out. Jockey T. Brooker the rider of BIG TICKET BOY was found guilty and charged with careless riding pursuant to AR 131(a) in that she did not make sufficient effort to stop and straighten her mount and prevent it from shifting out, resulting in BIG TICKET BOY making contact with HOLY FLASH (C. Sutherland) and being forced outwards into the rightful running of IRON GRACE (H. Van Der Hoven), which was inconvenienced and lost ground. Jockey T. Brooker’s license to ride in races was suspended for 10 days, commencing midnight 24th of October and conclude midnight 3rd of November 2025. Jockey T. Brooker was advised of her right of appeal. When asked to comment on the performance of IRON GRACE, Jockey H. Van Der Hoven explained that the instructions were to be positive out of the gate, however after being caught wide in the early stages he elected to allow his mount to stride forward and race up on the speed.
RACE 6: JOHNS LYNG GROUP BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP 1200 M
CASPERNOVA – Began awkwardly and was then hampered and lost ground. When racing keenly, threw its head up leaving the 600m. Laid in over the final 100m.
BEAU WITNESS – Bumped and carried out at the start.
SHOW ME MERCY – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped BEAU WITNESS. Approaching the 100m, brushed with FORTUNEER.
I AM A MARVEL – Jockey B. Thompson reported at scale that it was not his intention to lead however, after beginning well and with limited speed shown to his outside, he elected to maintain a leading position.
FORTUNEER – Approaching the 100m, brushed with SHOW ME MERCY.
GELATIN – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Over-raced in the middle stages. Inclined to lay out under pressure over the concluding 200m.
RACE 7: ARC PROJECTS CLASS 5 HANDICAP 1350 M
HASTEN DELIGHT – Laid out shortly after the start. Apprentice C. Franklin reported at scale that after the gelding secured a good early position it was under pressure approaching the home turn and proved disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
TONNEOFGRIT – Slow to begin.
I SEE YOU COMING – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Near the 700m, had to be steadied when awkwardly placed on heels. Near the 50m, had to be steadied from the heels of ELECTRIC ARROW, which shifted out. When asked to comment on the performance of I SEE YOU COMING, Jockey R. Maloney reported that in his opinion the gelding did not appreciate the slow tempo of today’s event.
ELECTRIC ARROW – Blundered on jumping away, momentarily unbalancing Jockey M. Wishart. A post-race veterinary examination revealed minor lacerations to its near foreleg.
CASROCK– Connections advised of a change of tactics in that CASROCK would attempt to settle midfield. Ridden accordingly.
RACE 8: LADBROKES MEGA MULTI CLASS 1 PLATE 1350 M
The start of this event was delayed approximately 7mins when PORT RIVER BILLIE burrowed under the front barrier partition, dislodging its saddle and then galloping for some distance before being recaptured. PORT RIVER BILLIE was declared a late scratching at 5:30pm on veterinary advice. Jockey C. Graham was examined by QAS personal and was found to have minor left wrist pain.
Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered that all bets placed on PORT RIVER BILLIE be refunded with the following deductions to apply:
1st GAMBINO 4c win, 4c place
2nd ADRANOS 5c place
3rd VOVO 4c place
A post-race veterinary examination revealed bruising on palpation to its wither and mild lameness on its near foreleg. Trainer K. Schweida was advised that PORT RIVER BILLIE would require a further barrier certificate and a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
Owing to the delay caused by PORT RIVER BILLIE being recaptured, all runners were backed out of the gates and the barriers were tested prior to reloading.
GAMBINO – Laid out rounding the home turn.
GOLDEN CROSS – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Jockey R. Dolan reported at scale that his mount raced greenly from the 600m.
LIVALITTLE (NZ) – Approaching the home turn was hampered when GOLDEN CROSS shifted out slightly when under pressure. Rounding the home turn had difficulty obtaining clear running and put in an awkward stride.
PUFF 'N' HARRY – Slow to begin.
SAN GABRIEL (NZ) – Had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the home straight.
VOVO – Contacted the rail leaving the mounting yard and underwent a veterinary examination upon arrival at the barriers and was cleared to start. Very slow to begin and lost ground. Over-raced in the early stages. Jockey B. Thompson reported at scale that it was his intention to ride forward however when the mare was very slow to begin, he was obliged to settle off the speed. He added that the delay caused by the loose horse, resulted in VOVO becoming agitated behind the barriers which may have affected its performance.
