Forced wider near the 800m by ZAHER (NZ), which shifted out to improve. When asked to comment on the tactics adopted today, Apprentice B. Osmond explained that his instructions were to gain cover in an attempt to get the horse to settle, he further added that the horse over-raced in the early and middle stages and at a point near the 800m he was momentarily forced wider on the track when ZAHER (NZ) shifted out to improve. He then elected to follow the favourite runner ALL KINDS OF FOLK rather than continue to race wide to the outside of ZAHER. Apprentice B. Osmond added that at a point near the 600m there was an opportunity to shift to the outside of ALL KINDS OF FOLK and follow JEMOMA ALPILAGE, however he felt that his better option was to follow ALL KINDS OF FOLK. After viewing the available footage, in particular that section of the race, Apprentice B. Osmond acknowledged that in hindsight the better option would have been to have shifted wider and follow JEMOMA ALPILAGE at the 600m which would have afforded him the opportunity to improve into the race earlier than he was able to. Stewards agreed with Apprentice B. Osmond that the better option would have been to shift wider and follow JEMOMA ALPILAGE, however given Apprentice B. Osmonds status as an apprentice rider and the options taken, Stewards were not of the opinion that the matter needed to be taken any further other than to note his comments.

FORT WILLIAM – Lost its near hind plate. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery. Stewards questioned Apprentice C. Baker regarding the tactics adopted, particularly from the 900m to the 600m. Of concern to Stewards was the tempo that Apprentice C. Baker and the rider of THEE CREEK (A. Thompson) set during this section of the race, which resulted in both runners establishing a margin on the remainder of the field. Apprentice C. Baker explained that she was required to make use of her mount in the early stages to cross inside runners, however envisioned settling behind THEE CREEK as she thought that runner would progress down to the rail, however this did not occur as THEE CREEK remained racing away from the rail, which resulted in FORT WILLIAM commencing to race keenly. Apprentice C. Baker further added that FORT WILLIAM proved difficult to settle and this was the reason her mount established a margin on the remainder of the field, which was not her intention. Stewards in assessing Apprentice C. Baker’s riding at that point of the race, accepted the explanation in that she was making effort to restrain her mount and the fact that THEE CREEK raced away from the inside rail, resulted in her mount proving difficult to settle, therefore Stewards took no further action other than to note the circumstances.
KUNDABUNG (NZ) – Began awkwardly and bumped SUPERHERO.
THEE CREEK – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Stewards questioned Jockey A. Thompson regarding the tactics adopted, particularly from the 900m to the 600m. Of concern to Stewards was the tempo that Jockey A. Thompson and the rider of FORT WILLAM (C. Baker) set during this section of the race, which resulted in both runners establishing a margin on the remainder of the field. Jockey A. Thompson advised Stewards that after beginning well, he was able to take up a forward position, however he elected not to race close to the rail and remain racing in a two wide position as connections had issued these instructions. Jockey A. Thompson added that as a result of racing in this position, FORT WILLIAM improved to his inside which resulted in both runners racing keenly from the 900m point, however he was of the opinion that he would be better served to allow THEE CREEK to continue in a rhythm rather than overly restrain the gelding. After reviewing the available footage, Stewards advised Jockey A. Thompson that he had erred this point of the race between the 800m and 600m and that he should have made greater effort to restrain his mount, however were not of the opinion that his riding at this point of the race was so unreasonable as to be culpable under the rules of racing and as such noted his comments and took the matter no further.
