Race 6: Lazy Yak Tattersall’s Cup (Group 3) – 3000m

ETAH JAMES - Stewards questioned J. Bayliss regarding his riding of the mare, in particular the reason for him when challenged by TRAVISTEE from the 1600m and on a number of occasions until passing the 800m, persisting with holding the lead during that stage and setting a solid tempo. Jockey Bayliss explained that he was instructed to lead today’s race as his horse does not possess a turn of foot, is one paced and has raced best when leading. Jockey Bayliss further explained that if he was to take hold the horse would not have finished the race off any better than it had given the circumstances. Trainer M. Cumani confirmed the instructions and reiterated that ETAH JAMES is not competitive when restrained in its races. Stewards advised jockey Bayliss that in their opinion he had erred by not attempting to restrain the mare during that part of the race and give it the capacity to finish the race off competitively. Stewards were of the view that this error was not so unreasonable as to be culpable under the Rules and therefore did not take any direct action.  A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

TRAVISTEE – Stewards questioned jockey T. Brooker regarding her riding of the mare and the reason for her challenging ETAH JAMES on a number of occasions from the 1600m until passing the 800m. Jockey Brooker explained that she was instructed to ride her mount forward and maintain a solid tempo and make the race into a true staying test. Jockey Brooker added she was of the view that the tempo during this part of the race was not overly fast and she was satisfied in the manner in which TRAVISTEE finished the race off. Trainer P. Jenkins confirmed the instructions and was satisfied with the ride on the mare today. Given the manner in which TRAVISTEE finished the race off Stewards accepted the explanations of both parties.  A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to a Good 3.
