GENERAL
Stewards approved the following weight variations at today’s meeting:
Race 4: COLLECTION POINT – D Thornton 53kg (+1kg)
As apprentice Y Lewis was to be overweight Stewards permitted M Kennedy to ride EXPRESSO. Y Lewis was reprimanded under AR190(3). In considering penalty Stewards considered her excellent record under this rule.
Race 1: MEKKAFEST 19 AUGUST QTIS Two-Year-Old Fillies Maiden Plate 1200 metres
ARISTELLA – As the filly was delayed arriving on course, underwent a veterinary examination prior to racing and was cleared to start. Shifted in under pressure passing the 300m.
DENOTE – Shifted out to obtain clear running leaving the 150m. Raced greenly when placed under pressure over the final 100m.
POW NOW – Over-raced in the early stages when being restrained to obtain cover.
UTOPIAN WINE – Laid out under pressure over final 100m.
Race 2: MOUNT FRANKLIN QTIS Two-Year-Old Colts and Geldings Maiden Plate 1200 metres
AUTUMN SONG – Approaching the 800m improved onto the heels of PAYLINE and was momentarily shifted wider on the track.
CLUBHOUSE – Slow to begin. Raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages of the event.
MORE TROUBLE – Laid in under pressure the home straight.
MY SPY – Jumped away awkwardly.
Race 3: XXXX DRY QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate 1600 metres
CYGNET RIVER – Jumped out at the start and bumped SIGNITA.
WHIZ BY – Bumped at the start. Over-raced for a short distance near the 1400m.
AHOY – Held up for clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight.
FRIJOLES – From the wide barrier was restrained shortly after the start to a rearward position closer to the rails.
GURU CLASS – Change of tactics, from the favourable barrier draw to be ridden more forward. Settled in a handy position with cover. Over-raced in the early and middle stages of the event. Approaching the 200m brushed with QUEENSWAY and became unbalanced when both runners shifted ground.
LADY MATILDA – Raced keenly approaching the 1200m when racing in restricted room to the inside of SIGNITA. Improved onto heels near 1000m before shifting wider from that point onwards. Laid in under pressure over the final 100m.
QUEENSWAY – Began awkwardly shifted in and bumped WHIZ BY. Leaving the 700m forced wider on the track when WHIZ BY shifted out to improve. Approaching the 200m brushed with GURU CLASS and became unbalanced when both runners shifted ground.
SIGNITA – Bumped at the start. Held up for clear running between the 350m until near the 250m, and near the 100m was obliged to alter course and improve to the outside of QUEENSWAY.
SMOOTH TORQUE – Slow to begin. Held up for clear running for the majority of the home straight.
BRAMBLE BAY – Change of tactics, from the favourable barrier draw to be ridden more forward. Unable to muster speed despite the efforts of its rider and settled in a midfield position with cover.
Race 4: SKY RACING QTIS BENCHMARK 72 Handicap 2212 metres
PEPPER'S GHOST – Began awkwardly. Leaving the 1600m shifted wider on the track, progressed forward to race outside the leader near the 1200m. Rider J Bayliss reported as a consequence of the gelding over-racing and being obliged to work harder in the middle stages of the event, PEPPER’S GHOST failed to finish the race off as expected and this coupled with the 61kg impost, contributed to overall disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
GO MILLO – After contacting the enclosure gate moving onto the track, was examined prior to being loaded into the barriers and cleared to start. Began awkwardly. Raced wide until near the 1800m. Held up for clear running between the 800m and 600m. When asked to comment if there was an opportunity to improve into the race leaving the 800m, rider L Cassidy explained in hindsight he may have been better served to shift out three wide at that point of the race however as INUWASHI had improved quickly to his outside he felt he would have been obliged to shift that runner wider which he was not confident of doing, adding a short distance later GO MILLO came off the bridle when the tempo of the race increased significantly. Stewards noted the explanation of L Cassidy. L Cassidy was reprimanded under AR 132(7)(a)(ii) for use of the whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m, 2 more than permitted.
MASTER MARKO – Shifted in under pressure approaching the 150m.
INUWASHI – After being slow to begin was crowded shortly after between Collection Point, which was taken outwards, and ADALISSA which jumped in. Shifted in under pressure in the home straight. Rider B Thompson momentarily dropped his offside rein approaching the 100m.
CHERNAK – From the wide barrier was restrained shortly after the start to a rearward position closer to the rails.Leaving the 1800m improved onto heels and had to be checked from heels when the pace of the race eased.
GLEN MASSEY – Jumped out at the start. Cast near hind plate in running.
REFLECTING IMAGE – Weakened from the 800m and was uncompetitive from that point.A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be displaying symptoms of cardiac arrhythmia. As this was the third such occurrence trainer G Cornish was advised under Racing Australia protocols REFLECTING IMAGE would now be stood down from racing. Trainer G Cornish advised Stewards REFLECTING IMAGE would now be retired from racing.
ADALISSA – Jumped in at the start.
COLLECTION POINT – Bumped at the start and taken outwards. Left a midfield trailing position at the 1600m and progressed forward to race in a leading position passing 1400m. When asked to comment rider D Thornton could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance other than that the gelding may benefit from a drop back in class.
Race 5: BRC MEMBERSHIP ON SALE NOW BENCHMARK 70 Handicap 1000 metres
BROKEN HERO – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
RIGEL STAR – Near the 150m steadied when awkwardly placed at the heels of BEPPE when that runner shifted out. M Harley, rider of BEPPE, was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances. When asked to comment on the overall performance, rider A Mallyon advised the horse travelled comfortably during the race and in his opinion, as the horse was first up today, RIGEL STAR would derive fitness benefit from today’s run.
BEPPE – Shifted out under pressure passing the 200m.
ROLL UP – Bumped shortly after the start when BARONESSA jumped in. When asked to comment on the performance rider J Orman could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
KNOCKKNEE – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
POWER BOOM – Raced wide for the majority of the event. Passing the 400m was bumped and became unbalanced momentarily when READY FOR ANYTHING attempted to shift out.
READY FOR ANYTHING – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Disappointed for run to the inside of POWER BOOM passing the 400m before shifting in to obtain clear running.
BARONESSA – Jumped in at the start.
SHADOW OF TIME – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Laid out and obliged to steady from heels near the 700m.
Race 6: LADBROKES ODDS SURGE Maiden Plate 1400 metres
COUNTER COMMAND – Raced wide in the early stages of the event.
HAPPISBURGH – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
AMMAND – Bumped at the start. Held up rounding the home turn until a point near the 250m.
DEFERENTIAL – Over-raced at heels near the 1000m.
KIND WISH – Jumped out at the start and bumped AMMAND. Improved onto heels near the 500m and had to be steadied.
PUCCINI DREAM – Slow to begin. Steadied from the heels of DEFERENTIAL near the 1200m.
OCEAN ZAR – From the wide barrier was restrained shortly after the start to a rearward position closer to the rails. Raced wide with cover from the 900m.
MILTON ROAD – Passing the 100m, when weakening, shifted out. Following the disappointing performance trainer D Forster advised MILTON ROAD would now be sent for a spell.
Race 7: RACECOURSE VILLAGE BENCHMARK 68 Handicap1400 metres
GALIFIANAKIS – Change of tactics, from the wide barrier draw to be ridden back in the field. Ridden accordingly. Raced keenly near the 800m had to be restrained from heels. Raced wide for the majority of the event.
MICRO – Began awkwardly.
TORBRECK – Jumped out at the start and bumped MIO SORRENTO before shortly after shifting in and bumping CHARLIE’S CASE.
TITANIUM – From the wide barrier was restrained shortly after the start to a rearward position closer to the rails.
SHOW OF STARS – Rider J Lloyd reported the mare was showing signs of being in season immediately following the event. A post-race veterinary examination confirmed SHOW OF STARS to be in season.
BRENTWOOD – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
WHITEWATER – Near the 1200m was hampered when crowded for room by TORBRECK which was taken in by MAGIC IN ME. Apprentice M Castle was reprimanded for careless riding under AR131(a) in this incident.
EXPRESSO LOVE – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
MIO SORRENTO – Bumped by MICRO rounding the home turn when that runner shifted out to improve.Raced wide for the majority of the event.
INVINSIBLE TEARS – Rider T Harrison dropped her whip near the 300m.
Race 8: GALLOPERS SPORTS CLUB Class 1 Plate 1200 metres
MERITABLE – Bumped with DARK HARMONY on jumping. Rider R Maloney reported it had been his intention to settle in a forward position, however after being bumped at the start, MERITABLE settled further back in the field than anticipated.
DARK HARMONY – Bumped with MERITABLE on jumping. Held up for clear running from the entrance of the home straight until passing the 300m. Awkwardly placed at heels near the 50m and went to the line without being fully tested by its rider.
GREYLANDER – When asked to comment on the disappointing performance rider A Jones was of the opinion the horse may have choked down. A post-race veterinary examination revealed lameness in the near hind leg. Trainer representative for T Gollan was advised the horse would require a veterinary clearance prior to its next race start.
ISRAELITE BAY – Slow to begin. Raced wide for the majority of the event.
HURI BLACK – Began awkwardly.
SUGARPIEHONEYBUNCH – Near the 900m raced keenly at heels and had to be restrained. Improved onto heels leaving the 400m.
BALTRAY – Slow to begin.
ZI WIN – Approaching the winning post became awkwardly placed at heels and had to be steadied.Raced wide for the majority of the event.
