GENERAL
 
Co trainers A & T Sweeney were fined $200 pursuant to LR68(1) for failing to scratch LADY ZAYDI in race 8 by the prescribed time.
 
Trainer J Townsend was fined $200 pursuant to LR36(6) for failing to scratch LOS ALAMITOS as a dual acceptor in race 4 by the prescribed time.
 
Stewards accepted the explanation for trainer T Gollan failing to scratch LUKE SKYWALKER as a dual acceptor in race 4 by the prescribed time.
 

RACE 1:THE GIBSON MAIDEN PLATE 1000 M
 
GRAM – Jockey B Thomspon reported that he felt GRAM over raced in the middle stages.
 
MAGIC INVADER – Slow to begin. Obliged to alter course leaving the 400m and shifted out to improve.
 
ZOUSTROLOGY – Obliged to steady when racing in restricted room when leaving the 800m. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.
 
EGYPTIAN GODDESS – Raced wide.   
 
SWORD OF LEGACY – Shifted in abruptly when racing under pressure near the 50m.
 
Following the running of race 1, stewards upgraded the track to a Good 4.    

RACE 2: SKY RACING MAIDEN PLATE 1400 M

DELICIOUS DEREK – Began awkwardly and shifted out onto SONIC FLYER. Jockey R Maloney reported that he had concerns with the gelding’s action when placed under pressure in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
FLASHMASTER – Began awkwardly and shifted in onto SONIC FLYER. When asked to comment on the tactics adopted for FLASHMASTER in today’s event, jockey A Mallyon stated that he was instructed to ride the gelding where comfortable. A Mallyon stated that after beginning well, he was aiming to settle in the in the midfield to rear position, but after FLASHMASTER failed to settle, he allowed the gelding to improve to take up a leading position. Jockey A Mallyon suggested to connections that FLASHMASTER may be better suited to shorter distance races and to attempt to gain cover as soon as practical. Stewards noted his comments.
 
KADESKY – Held up from rounding the home turn until near the 250m.
 
LOS ALAMITOS – Began awkwardly and shifted in onto THE AVIATOR. Apprentice C Sutherland reported that LOS ALAMITOS had raced with its tongue over the bit.
 
LUKE SKYWALKER – Began awkwardly and shifted out onto SATURDAYS GIRL. Inclined to lay out throughout the event.
 
THE AVIATOR – Hampered at the start between THE MESSIAH which shifted out and LOS ALAMITOS which shifted in. Over raced in the early stages.
 
SATURDAYS GIRL - Hampered at the start when LUKE SKYWALKER shifted out.
 
THE MESSIAH – Began awkwardly and shifted out onto THE AVIATOR. Near the 1100m was momentarily inconvenienced having to avoid the heels of SATURDAYS GIRL which shifted out marginally. Had difficulty obtaining clear running at the entry to the home straight. On return to scales, jockey J Lloyd reported that he was instructed to not pressure the horse in the early stages as the mare had a tendency to over race, but after being trapped wide, he elected to restrain to take up a position at the rear of the field. After commencing to over race, in hindsight was of the opinion he should have allowed his mount to stride forward, rather than restraining.
 
SONIC FLYER – Hampered at the start when FLASHMASTER shifted in and DELICIOUS DEREK shifted out. Over raced in the early stages. Jockey M Du Plessis reported that he felt SONIC FLYER to be field shy.


RACE 3:  BUSY AT WORK NATIONAL APPRENTICE RACE SERIES QTIS CLASS 1 PLATE   1600 M
 
BUSKER – Over raced in the early stages.
 
HEROIC BEACH – Apprentice A Riddell reported her saddle slipped back in the early stages, placing her at a disadvantage.
 
PREFER TO DANCE (NZ) - Momentarily inconvenienced when passing the 100m.
 
CLIVE'S GLORY – Obliged to steady passing the 1200m when DIVERSITY shifted in to obtain a position on the rail. Inclined to lay out throughout the event.
 
INSIDE PASSAGE  - Hampered at the start and lost ground when DIVERSITY shifted out. Apprentice C Sutherland reported that he felt INSIDE PASSAGE failed to respond to his riding at various parts of the race and was of the opinion the gelding may benefit from a step up in distance.
 
GREY IMPACT – Apprentice C Cooper reported that GREY IMPACT weakened noticeably when placed under pressure. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow post-race recovery.
 
DIVERSITY  - Began awkwardly and shifted out onto INSIDE PASSAGE. Laid out under pressure over the concluding stages.

RACE 4:  XXXX GOLD QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE          1400 M
 
ASTERN EFFORT  - A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow post-race recovery and respiratory sounds. Trainer R Lipp was advised ASTERN EFFORT would require a veterinary certificate, inclusive of an endoscopic exam prior to accepting for a future jump out, trial or race.
 
SWING STATE – Passing the 400m was momentarily inconvenienced when having its hindquarter contacted.
 
DON'T DOUBT MISSY – Momentarily held up for clear running on entering the home straight. Laid out under pressure over the concluding stages.
 
EVENING DELLE – Jockey C Graham reported that she felt her mount raced greenly in the home straight.
 
SHE CAN SOAR – Slow to begin.
 
CRYPTION'S DESIRE – Blundered at the start.


RACE 5:  NATIONAL APPRENTICE RACE SERIES QTIS CLASS 1 PLATE     1200 M
 
Prior to the declaration of correct weight, apprentice A Riddell rider of BEREZKA (2nd place) after viewing the films lodged a protest against 1st place getter SAINT ALDWYN ridden by apprentice C Sutherland alleging interference passing the 350m. Stewards, after hearing evidence from all parties and on review of the official films, were of the opinion at a point leaving 350m SAINT ALDWYN attempted to improve into run on the rail which was established by BEREZKA. At the point where SAINT ALDWYN crossed, BEREZKA lost momentum and was obliged to shift to the outside of SAINT ALDWYN. Stewards, considering how both horses finished off the race and the official margin, were not satisfied that the interference resulting from the shift from SAINT ALDWYN were to the extent that should warrant altering the ½ length margin. Therefore, stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that if the interference had not occurred, BEREZKA would have finished in front of SAINT ALDWYN, and therefore dismissed the protest and declared correct weight on the judge’s numbers.

REWRITE – Shifted out onto BETTER SWEET approaching the 200m.
 
SAINT ALDWYN – Slow to begin.
 
BEREZKA – Over raced in the middle stages. Passing the 800m steadied off the heels of SAINT ALDWYN. Passing the 350m was momentarily inconvenienced and obliged to shift out to avoid the heels of SAINT ALDWYN which shifted in to improve. Apprentice C Sutherland was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR131(a) for careless riding for this incident.
 
DISMANTLE - Near the 250m was momentarily inconvenienced when STRIKE WEAPON was taken out.
 
HAPPY BELLIE – Began awkwardly. Raced wide.
 
BETTER SWEET – Passing the 250m was taken out onto DISMANTLE when REWRITE shifted out. Apprentice E Pozman was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR131(a) for careless riding for this incident.


RACE 6:  STRADBROKE SEASON ON SALE NOW BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP      1000 M
 
THE LUCKY ALIEN - Stood flat footed as the start was effected and as a result was slow to begin. Raced wide. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow post-race recovery.
 
COUNT NICHOLAS - Bumped at the start with GALACTIC STAR. Near the 600m was momentarily inconvenienced when GUAC ON shifted in when racing ungenerously.
 
GALACTIC STAR – Bumped at the start with COUNT NICHOLAS. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow post-race recovery.
 
GUAC ON – Raced ungenerously.


RACE 7:  DRINKWISE BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP 1800 M

GREY NORTHERN (NZ) – Inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight. Apprentice C Sutherland reported that in his opinion the mare felt one paced in today’s event and may benefit from longer distance races.
 
KERKORIAN - Began awkwardly.
 
MALECON – Began awkwardly and bumped with PROPOSE. When asked to comment on today’s improved performance of MALECON in today’s event. Trainer M Nolan stated he wasn’t overly disappointed in the geldings’ last start at Toowoomba and benefitted from being able to take up a forward position with cover in today’s event. He further added that he was pleased with the work of the gelding leading into today’s event and confident of a forward showing.
 
ADDITION (NZ) – When asked to comment on the performance of ADDITION (NZ) in today’s event. He stated that the mare travelled well but when placed under pressure in the home straight felt disappointing.
 
PISTON REBEL – Raced wide. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have mild heat stress.
 
PROPOSE – Began awkwardly and bumped with MALECON.
 
SAVEUR – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. When asked to comment on the performance of SAVEUR in today’s event. Jockey A Jones stated that the filly proved disappointing and may have come to end of its preparation. Stable representative advised stewards that they would be discussing with connections the likelihood of sending SAVEUR for a spell in light of today’s performance and would report back to stewards on any findings with SAVEUR’s post-race recovery.
 
 
RACE 8:  LADBROKES QUICK MULTI BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP   1400 M
 
SENESCHAL (IRE) - Held up for clear running on entering the home straight until passing the 250m. Momentarily inconvenienced approaching the 200m when awkwardly placed on heels of DISSELATION which laid out under pressure.    
 
EL PENSADOR – Passing the 300m, had to be steadied after improving onto the heels of the weakening BETTERLUCKNEXTTIME, then was obliged to shift in to improve
 
DISSELATION – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have moderate heat stress and the thumps.
 
BETTERLUCKNEXTTIME - Was momentarily inconvenienced leaving the 200m when racing in restricted room whilst weakening. When asked to comment on the performance of BETTERLUCKNEXTTIME in today’s event, apprentice C Sutherland stated that he became concerned with the gelding action the concluding stages when placed under pressure. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have heat stress.

FASVARA – Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.
 
NAVY NINA (NZ) – Inclined to lay out rounding the home turn and in the home straight.
 
SOME STYLE – Began awkwardly and shifted out.
 
MEADOWBROOK (NZ) – Over raced in the early stages. Raced in restricted room passing the 100m for a short distance between SENESCHAL (IRE) and FASVARA which shifted in before being corrected.
 
SHE MOVES TOO – Shifted out on jumping away and contacted DISSELATION. Held up for clear running on entering the home straight until approaching the 200m. Laid out under pressure over the concluding stages.
 
SIMPLY FUN – Connections advised that SIMPLY FUN would attempt to settle back in today’s event. Ridden accordingly.
 
CANARA – Began awkwardly and slow into stride. Had difficulty obtaining clear running passing the 200m and then when attempting to shift out, raced in restricted room for a number of strides passing the 100m. Laid out under pressure over the concluding stages.
