OUTBACK STEP – Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced wide in the early stages until obtaining the lead near the 1000m. When queried regarding the tactics adopted, jockey R Silvera Olivera advised that after being trapped 3 wide in the initial stages, he elected to press forward and then obtained the lead near the 1000m, which is consistent with the usual racing pattern of OUTBACK STEP. The rider then added that he had an awareness of the work endured in the early stages, so once obtaining the lead he took restraint of his mount in an attempt to offer the gelding some respite in the middle stages. Jockey Silvera Olivera further added that despite the work endured and obtaining some respite, OUTBACK STEP only travelled fairly during the run and battled moderately until the 300m before giving ground over the final stages and 3 weeks between runs may have contributed to the overall performance when considering the work endured.
