SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT
From Beaudesert 26 May 2025:
Stewards concluded an inquiry into jockey J. Morris’ riding of ARCHERS REIGN in race 5, Benchmark 65 Handicap 1400 metres. Rider J. Morris stated that after not jumping well and due to the speed in the race, he slowly progressed across from the wide barrier and settled with cover at back of the field. He added that his mount travelled comfortably but was on and off the bit and that after leaving the 600m, he was unable to follow any runner into the race and elected to ride for luck. He further stated that when a run did not present itself approaching the home turn, he shifted his mount wider on the track, and when the gelding was inclined to hang in, he elected to ride hands and heels in and effort to keep his mount balanced and straight. Trainer J. Sweeney advised that the instructions were not to dig the gelding out of the gates, that the horse can over race and to obtain cover. He added that he did not expect the horse to be back as far as it was, however bearing in mind this was the gelding’s first up run from a spell over a shorter distance, he was not disappointed with the run. Stewards conducted a review of the betting of this race and did not identify any irregularities.
Stewards in considering the evidence tendered, were of the opinion that J. Morris had erred in his riding, that from a point near the 500m to the 300m, he should have used initiative to progress forward and shift out earlier than he did. Stewards noted that ARCHERS REIGN was inconvenienced near the 200m when BAROCCO BAR shifted out, and that ARCHERS REIGN did want to lay in at stages in the home straight. In concluding, Stewards determined that J. Morris’ riding was not culpable to the requisite standard of the rules and took no further action.
J. Morris subsequently pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR228(b), the specifics being that on 26 May at the Beaudesert race meeting, that during an inquiry he conducted himself improperly by using offensive language on two occasions in the inquiry. In considering penalty, Stewards acknowledged J. Morris’ remorse for his actions, his guilty plea, personal circumstances and disciplinary record. Stewards imposed a $1000 fine, however under the provisions of AR283(5), suspended $600 for a period of two (2) years on the condition that J. Morris does not breach this or a conduct related rule within this time.
