1st – Payback 2nd – Brave Dazzler 3rd – Captain Tango 4th – Hidden Ability

The start was delayed when HIDDEN ABILITY was fractious in the barriers and had to be removed in order to be resaddled.

BRAVE DAZZLER – Shifted out at the start and bumped PAYBACK. Hung out approaching the home turn.

PAYBACK – Bumped at the start. A post race veterinary examination revealed the horse to have a delayed post race recovery.

HIDDEN ABILITY – When asked to comment on the performance jockey M. Hellyer stated that he was not overly disappointed with the gelding’s performance as it was inclined to race greenly throughout the race today. Jockey Hellyer was of the view that the gelding will improve with the addition of blinkers and when stepped up over further ground. A swab sample was taken.

Race 2: RACV Royal Pines QTIS 3YO Fillies H’Cap – 900m

1st – Deep Pockets 2nd – Miss War Trace 3rd – Pop Bubble Pop 4th – Step Potential

STEP POTENTIAL – At the request of connections stewards permitted the filly to race without winkers on the undertaking that the gear change had been effected prior to acceptances. Stewards will make further enquiries as to when the gear change was effected.

Jockey J. Morris (MISS BELLA ROSA) was reprimanded for failing to ride the filly right out to the end of the race. Stewards were not of the opinion that his failure to ride the filly out had any material affect on its placing.

Race 5: Surfers Paradise RSL Colts, Geldings & Entires Maiden H’Cap – 1300m
1st – Benico’s Prince 2nd – Tonna Power 3rd – Asti Chops 4th – Elmotino

The start was delayed when ART OF PURFECTION reared and became cast in the barriers. The gelding was subsequently withdrawn by order of stewards at 3.11 p.m. acting on veterinary advice. All monies invested on ART OF PURFECTION were ordered to be refunded. Deductions applicable to bets placed on the winner and place-getters prior to 3.11 p.m.:

3 cents in the dollar for the win - # 7 (BENICO’S PRINCE)
3 cents in the dollar for the place of winner - #7 (BENICO’S PRINCE)
3 cents in the dollar for the 2nd place - #9 (TONNA POWER)
5 cents in the dollar for the 3rd place - #10 (ASTI CHOPS)

Trainer G. Shaw was advised that a barrier certificate would be required prior to ART OF PURFECTION racing again.

TONNA POWER – Began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly despite the efforts of its rider.

ROSS RIVER – Began awkwardly. Raced wide for the majority.

BIG JOE – Began awkwardly and a short distance later had to be steadied from heels.

GALIANO – Checked and lost ground when tightened for room shortly after the start. Raced fiercely during the early and middle stages of the race and had to be continuously steadied from the heels of ELMOTINO.

ROUGH KISS – Steadied when tightened for room shortly after the start. Near the 1100m had to be steadied when tightened for room and lost ground.

B. El-Issa (BENICO’S PRINCE) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that at a point near the 1100m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of ROUGH KISS. ROUGH KISS then had to be steadied when tightened for room between BENICO’S PRINCE and TONNA POWER. B. El-Issa was suspended from riding in races for a period of nine (9) meetings to commence midnight 15 February 2015 and to expire midnight 28 February 2015. In assessing penalty stewards took into account B. El-Issa’s recent poor record.

ASTI CHOPS – Hung out rounding the home turn.

BENICO’S PRINCE – When questioned as to the tactics adopted B. El-Issa stated that it was not his intention to race outside the leader however, when mustering speed early the gelding found itself in a handy position and due to the slow tempo during the middle stages he allowed it to stride forward to sit outside the leader. His explanation was noted.

Race 6: Burleigh Bears Class 3 Plate – 1800m
1st – Cheeky Devil 2nd – Frightening Bolt 3rd – Supercoach 4th – Mestalla

Held up rounding the home turn and leaving the 300m was disappointed for a run between ANGEL’S DESTINY and MESTALLA, both of which shifted ground. A short distance later was inclined to lay in behind the heels of ANGEL’S DESTINY and elected to shift to the inside of that runner to obtain clear running. Near the 100m jockey A. Allen lost the use of his near side rein for a short distance.

HARPSUND – Slow to begin.

MESTALLA – When questioned as to the tactics adopted App McGillivray stated that he was instructed to take up a forward position however, when ANGEL’S DESTINY was overracing to his inside he was reluctant to press forward as he was concerned that the gelding may commence to overrace. App McGillivray stated that for this reason he allowed FRIGHTENING BOLT to cross forward of him as he noted that the gelding was having its first start over 1800m. App McGillivray added that the gelding failed to quicken when placed under pressure leaving the 600m and in his opinion raced flat. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Stable representative S. Jones stated that in his view the gelding is better suited when able to lead. Stewards noted the explanation.
