Trainer L Freedman also expressed disappointment in the performance of the gelding however advised that in his opinion, after losing ground at the start and being forced to check from heels at the 600m, these were major factors of the poor performance. On returning to scale, jockey J Guthmann-Chester reported that when riding the short priced favourite in this event, after beginning on terms with the remainder of the field, he elected to ride forward in an endeavour to obtain the leading position to ensure he had an unimpeded run during the event, as he felt his mount had far superior form to the remainder of the field. Jockey Guthmann-Chester also added that he had formed the view that the racing pattern of today was suiting on pace runners and as a consequence the gelding settled further forward than anticipated.

Race 8: PALMS SUPER SATURDAY OPEN HCP – 1100M

Stewards questioned jockey A Thompson (ELIXIR) and jockey C Bayliss (WUDANG BLADE) in relation to the tempo set in the middle stages of today’s event, whereby both runners established a considerable lead on the remainder of the field. Jockey Bayliss advised that it was his intention to hold the leading position during the event as per the horses established racing pattern and for that reason, when pressured by ELIXIR which improved to his outside, he elected to maintain a position to the inside of that runner rather than take a sit behind it during the middle stages. Jockey Thompson advised that in his opinion ELIXIR races best when not overly restrained in its races and therefore he was content with the tempo being set despite it being faster than he would have preferred. Stewards in noting the explanations off both riders, did advise them that in their opinion it may have been more advantageous to set a slightly slower tempo during the middle stages in an endeavour to allow their mounts a better opportunity to finish the race off.
