GENERAL
Stewards approved the following overweight allowances at today's meeting:
Race 1 – MISTRESSOFILLUSION – T. Berry +0.5kg (55kg)
Race 1 – BESTOWER – A. Mallyon +0.5kg (54.5kg)
Race 3 – OCEAN ALPS – D. Thornton +1kg (54kg)
Race 4 – OUGHTON – N. Callow +1kg (56.5kg)
Race 4 – NEED SOME LUCK – T. Berry +1kg (55kg)
As jockey N. Rawiller was overweight in races 5, 6 and 8, he was replaced as per the Stewards summary. Stewards accepted Jockey Rawiller’s explanation for the overweights.
Trainer T. Sears was reprimanded pursuant to AR227(a) for being negligent in that he declared apprentice C. Collis in race 9 at true weight which, he was unable to ride at.
Race 1: BBC DIGITAL AND CANON AUSTRALIA BENCHMARK 78 HANDICAP 2200M
SHAHZAD (FR) – Began awkwardly. Held up approaching the home turn. When asked to comment on the improved performance, Co-Trainer A. Archibald stated the gelding in her opinion has started to acclimatize to Australian racing and with todays step up in distance, was confident of a forward showing.
THE RIGHT WAY (NZ) – Trainer G. Wright was fined $200 pursuant to LR30(1) for failing to have THE RIGHT WAY on course by the prescribed time. Subsequently, the gelding underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Jumped the crossing near the 1600m.
HECTOR DE MARIS (IRE) – Jockey N. Callow advised the gelding didn’t handle today’s heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
MISTRESSOFILLUSION (IRE) – Began awkwardly. Shifted wider from the 1000m to improve and raced wide from that point onwards. Jockey T. Berry advised the mare didn’t handle today’s heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
BESTOWER (NZ) – Began awkwardly and then bumped shortly after the start. Held up approaching the home turn. Laid out under pressure in the home straight.
BIAS – Passing the 1900m, steadied from the heels of HECTOR DE MARIS (N. Callow) which shifted in when not fully clear. Jockey N. Callow was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.
Race 2: TRAVIS SCHULTZ & PARTNERS BENCHMARK 85 HANDICAP 1200M
METALART – Jockey M. Rodd advised the gelding didn’t handle today’s heavy track conditions.
JOHN RAMBO – Raced wide throughout. Near the 700m, inconvenienced and was bumped when EMPEROR shifted out. When questioned regarding the performance, jockey M. Harley advised his mount became awkward in its stride on entering the home straight which may have contributed to its finishing efforts. Jockey M. Harley also added that the gelding may not have appreciated today’s heavy track conditions. Jockey M. Harley pleaded guilty to a charge pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip on 9 occasions prior to the 100m, 10 in totality. Jockey Harley was fined $500.
EMPEROR – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Near the 700m, improved onto heels, shifted out and bumped JOHN RAMBO. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
ENTERPRISE LUCIA – Laid out under pressure in the home straight.
Race 3: ATTWOOD MARSHALL LAWYERS SILK STOCKING - LISTED - WEIGHTS RAISED 1.5KG 1400M
TORABELLA – Raced wide throughout. Jockey B. Shinn advised the mare didn’t handle today’s heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
EXOTIQUE MISS – When asked to comment on the performance, jockey E. Brown advised the mare may not have handled today’s heavy track conditions and believes it would appreciate a step up in distance.
SET TO SHINE – Began awkwardly and blundered. Raced wide throughout. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Momentarily held up approaching the 200m.
RED DEFCON – Slow to begin. Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced in restricted room leaving the 1000m.
LADY SHOTGUN – Began awkwardly.
CINQUE TERRE – Began awkwardly. Raced wide throughout. Leaving the 1000m, tightened for room and steadied when TORABELLA (B. Shinn) shifted in when insufficiently clear. Jockey B. Shinn pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) in that leaving the 1000m he allowed mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of CINQUE TERRE and as a result that runner was steadied from its heels. Jockey Shinn’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 10 days to commence midnight 19th of May 2025 and to expire midnight 29th of May 2025. When determining penalty, Stewards considered jockey Shinn’s record in relation to this rule, his guilty plea and the QRIC careless riding penalty guidelines.
ADIELLA – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Laid in rounding the home turn and when placed under pressure in the home straight.
OCEAN ALPS – Passing the 500m, had to be steadied after improving onto the heels of AERIAL DANCER. Had difficulty obtaining clear running on entering the home straight.
Race 4: AUSTRALIAN TURF CLUB TROPHY - LISTED 1200M
BOOM TORQUE – Began awkwardly and was then bumped. Raced keenly in the middle stages.
INFANCY – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped MILLANE.
OUGHTON – Shifted in at the start and bumped BOOM TORQUE.
MILLANE – Bumped on jumping and then shortly after was restrained from heels. Momentarily inconvenienced on entering the home straight when NEED SOME LUCK shifted out to improve.
NEED SOME LUCK – Slow to begin. Raced keenly in the middle stages.
FLYING TRAPEZE – Raced wide throughout.
NED'S GULLY – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Raced in restricted room for a short distance passing the 100m.
Race 5: TAB KEN RUSSELL MEMORIAL CLASSIC - GROUP 3 1200M
BETTERLUCKNEXTTIME – Began awkwardly. Near the 800m, inconvenienced and taken out when BRAVE JET shifted out and then was obliged to check off heels. Shortly after, had to be steadied after becoming awkwardly placed on the heels of ALL TOO FOXY which was carried in marginally by SUNRAYS (T. Berry) which shifted in. Jockey T. Berry was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances. Laid out under pressure over the final 100m.
MORTAL HALO – Bumped on jumping. Raced wide for the majority. Jockey E. Brown could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
BRAVE JET – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped MORTAL HALO. Over raced in the early and middle stages. Near the 800m, improved onto heels, shifted out and inconvenienced BETTERLUCKNEXTTIME.
DUN DARTE CHEAP – Raced wide throughout.
MISHANI MAUI – Raced wide throughout.
SUNRAYS – Raced wide throughout. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
TIDAL POINT – Raced keenly in the middle stages. Approaching the 400m, momentarily became awkward on the heels of FABULANTES and had to be steadied.
EGYPTIAN GODDESS – Slow to begin. Held up approaching and rounding the home turn.
Following a heavy downpour after the running of this race, the track was downgraded to a heavy 9.
Race 6: BRANDONS ELECTRICAL GOLD COAST GUINEAS - GROUP 3 1200M
EMIRATE – Shifted in at the start and bumped MERCHANT GOLD. When asked to comment on the performance, jockey J. McDonald advised the colt didn’t handle today’s heavy track conditions.
WANARUAH – When asked to comment on the performance, jockey T. Clark advised the colt which was first up today peaked on its run near the 100m and would derive significant benefit from this run.
COSMIC FIRE – Raced wide throughout. Passing the 300m, momentarily inconvenienced whilst weakening after having to restrain from the heels of BOSUSTOW (J. Parr) which shifted out to obtain clear running. Jockey J. Parr was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.
TUNED – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
MERCHANT GOLD – Bumped on jumping. Became awkwardly placed on heels passing the 900m and was steadied.
HEAVENLY IMPACT – Slow into stride. Over raced in the early and middle stages.
ZOUBABY – When asked to comment on the performance, jockey T. Berry advised the filly didn’t handle today’s heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
PRIDE TO FOLLOW – Raced in restricted room for a considerable distance whilst over racing approaching the 1000m. Raced wide for the majority.
FINGERS HUNTER – Slow to begin.
Race 7: TAB A.D. HOLLINDALE STAKES - GROUP 2 1800M
ANTINO (NZ) – Slow to begin. Raced wide without cover throughout.
BUCKAROO (GB) – When asked to comment on the performance, jockey J. McDonald advised the gelding didn’t handle today’s heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainers representative Mr B. Killion advised he would report back to Stewards in the subsequent days on how BUCKAROO pulls up.
LINDERMANN – When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey N. Rawiller advised the gelding travelled well until 700m but then commenced to weaken in the heavy track conditions from that point. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be coughing. Trainer’s representative Mr B. Killion was advised the gelding would require a veterinary clearance, inclusive with the results of an endoscopic examination prior to next racing.
JUST FOLK – Jockey N. Callow could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
MILITARIZE (NZ) – Slow to begin.
ELIYASS (FR) – When asked to comment on the performance, jockey T. Clark advised the gelding didn’t handle today’s heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be coughing. Co-Trainer A. Bott was advised the gelding would require a veterinary clearance, inclusive with the results of an endoscopic examination prior to next racing.
Following the running of this race, the track was downgraded to a heavy 10.
Race 8: CERTIS SECURITY GOLD COAST BRACELET – LISTED 1800M
REAL CLASS (NZ) – Declared a late scratching at 4:18pm due to the track downgrade.
PLEASURE ARTIST – Approaching the 600m, taken out by MERIDIANA.
POSTER GIRL – Become awkward in its stride on a number of occasions shortly after the start. Trainer C. Munce was advised a warning would be placed on the filly.
PINITO – Slow to begin. Raced wide throughout.
MERIDIANA (NZ) – Leaving the 1600m, momentarily steadied from the heels of POSTER GIRL (M. Harley) which shifted in when not fully clear. Jockey M. Harley was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) for this incident. When asked to comment on the performance, jockey D. Thornton advised the filly didn’t handle today’s heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Cast both front plate in running.
HEAT MISSILE – When asked to comment on the performance, jockey T. Clark advised the filly didn’t handle today’s heavy track conditions.
CANNY QUEEN (NZ) – Raced in restricted room for a short distance near the 1200m.
SUN WORSHIPPER – Raced wide throughout. Approaching the 600m, raced in restricted room and had to steady when PLEASURE ARTIST was taken out by MERIDIANA (D. Thornton) which shifted out when not clear. Jockey D. Thornton was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) for this incident.
AMPLIFY – Raced wide throughout.
TWISTED LOVE (NZ) – Change of tactics; to be ridden further forward in a midfield position. Slow to begin and settled at the rear of the field.
SIRKEL – Approaching the 400m, steadied when tightened for room to the inside of MERIDIANA which was taken in by AMPLIFY (B. Shinn) which shifted in when not clear. Jockey B. Shinn was severely reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) for this incident.
Following the running of race 8, riders raised concerns with the visibility and following a track inspection by Stewards which revealed surface water, race 9 was postponed at 5:10pm.
