As L. Dittman and R. McMahon were indisposed due to injury, and as M. Dracos was unavailable, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
RACE 1: TERRY NEALE MEMORIAL F&M MAIDEN H’CAP – 1350M
BERNINDI – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
CHICAGO – Stood flat-footed when the gates were released and then was reluctant to get into its stride. Trainer M. Caltabiano was advised that the mare would be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial before being permitted to start again.
DEEP POCKETS – Trapped wide in the early stages, allowed to stride forward and cross to the lead near the 900m.
CAJUN CAT – Inconvenienced at the start.
STEP POTENTIAL – Connections advised that from the good gate it will be the intention to have the horse ridden in a more forward position. The horse was ridden accordingly.
RACE 2: COL BAYLISS MEMORIAL C,G&E MAIDEN H’CAP – 1350M
After being boxed, DANCING WARRIOR reared over and got down in its stall. After being examined by the veterinary surgeon, DANCING WARRIOR was declared a late scratching at 12.49 pm. Trainer D. Bougoure was advised that the gelding would be required to trial to the satisfaction of the stewards before being permitted to start again. GAMBLER'S GAME, which was drawn alongside DANCING WARRIOR, was also removed from its stall where it was examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. Whilst these horses were being examined, NEGRESCO also became fractious, resulting in it having to be removed from its stall and examined before being passed fit to start. As B. Stewart (DANCING WARRIOR) was injured in this incident, he was unable to fulfil his remaining engagement in Race 3 on SOCOTRA and was replaced by R. Fradd. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on DANCING WARRIOR be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:
9 cents in the dollar for the Win #1
15 cents in the dollar for place of winner #1
14 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #3
15 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #17
I'M HECTOR – Steadied when crowded near the 800m.
BENTLES – Steadied near the 900m.
REAL HEART – When questioned, T. Harrison explained that the horse, after standing in its stall for a lengthy period of time, was then slow to begin and reluctant to muster speed in the early stages. She added that in the early stages REAL HEART was inclined to get on one rein and in her opinion, in the track conditions, had difficulty with the specific nature of the track. She said that approaching the 600m she was following the eventual winner and had to take hold near the 500m when GAMBLER'S GAME, which was weakening, lost ground quickly in front of her, resulting in her mount shifting wider. She added that REAL HEART never appeared to handle today's track and only did its best work when able to balance up where it was fully tested in the straight. Trainer T. Gollan confirmed the instructions given and concurred with the comments made by jockey Harrison. He said that at the horse's previous start it had raced in a similar manner and in his opinion is a horse which is going to be more suited stepping up in distance and racing on a bigger circuit. The explanation tendered by jockey Harrison was noted.
R. Fradd, the rider of AMAZING MR HUGHES, which finished 5th, was reprimanded and reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts right out to the end of the race.
RACE 3: GEORGE KITCHING MEMORIAL MAIDEN H’CAP – 1666M
GOWAN BRAE – Got its head up in the early stages when being steadied.
DUCHESS MOLLY – Held up slightly rounding the home turn.
MAGIC DRAGON – Became unbalanced shortly after straightening.
BALLY BULL – Crowded at the start.
RACE 4: MAX STANDFIELD MEMORIAL QTIS 3YO H’CAP – 1666M
As R. Wiggins advised that he was ill, J. Byrne was substituted as the rider of HERRSCHAFT.
FIRE PLACE – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination on arrival behind the barriers and was cleared to start. When questioned as to the disappointing performance, T. Wolfgram reported that the colt became awkward making the crossing in the early stages and failed to travel comfortably at any stage thereafter and proved disappointing. Apprentice Wolfgram stated that from the wide barrier he was caught wide early and unable to obtain the lead, which was his intention pre-race.
FATBILL – Overraced in the early and middle stages and near the 1200m was steadied from the heels of ALL ON OUR OWN. Steadied from heels near the 400m.
RACE 5: DR MERVYN FISH MEMORIAL CLASS 3 H’CAP – 1000M
ZIETTA was withdrawn at 2.31 pm when unable to be loaded. As the horse has similarly offended on numerous occasions, Mr Nugent was advised that the mare would be required to perform satisfactorily in two consecutive jump-outs in the presence of a steward prior to being permitted to race again. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on ZIETTA be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:
33 cents in the dollar for the Win #8
27 cents in the dollar for place of winner #8
29 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #3
No racing incidents.
Following the running of this race the track was upgraded to SOFT 6.
RACE 6: KEVIN KEIDGE MEMORIAL CLASS 3 H’CAP – 1666M
AGENCIA – Slow to begin, then crowded shortly after the start.
COUP D'ETAT – Lost its off hind plate in running.
RACE 7: CHANNEL 7 CLASS 3 H’CAP – 1666M
MORE IMPACT – Apprentice C. Schmidt was unable to put forward any explanation for the horse's performance other than that it never travelled throughout the race, did not feel comfortable in the track conditions and was reluctant to stretch out despite her urgings. Trainer T. McCarthy said that the horse missed a race recently due to the meeting being abandoned. He was of the view that in today's event, when the tempo of the race quickened, MORE IMPACT was unable to be competitive due to the track conditions. He was also of the view that the horse would benefit from the run and advised that it would be his intention to step the horse up in distance.
DESTARS – Steadied when crowded near the 100m. M. Cahill (ELLA MAGIC) was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift out at that point.
ANGEL'S DESTINY – Overraced in the early stages and had to be restrained from heels near the 1400m.
RACE 8: CITY OF IPSWICH RATINGS BAND 0-70 H’CAP – 1200M
STARSTREAMED – Slow to begin.
PURE REALITY – Lost its off fore plate in running.
SNITZIOLA – Connections advised that the horse would be ridden in a more forward position if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.
MY BELOVED – Began awkwardly.
RACE 9: SKY RACING WORLD CLASS 4 H’CAP – 1350M
THAT'LLBGOOD – Lost its off fore plate in running.
HOW CAN I HELP – J. Byrne reported that when left racing without cover, the horse pulled very hard and this may have contributed to its disappointing performance.
HIGH ACE – T. Harrison explained that her instructions were to be in a forward position but with cover if possible. She said in the early stages when SOME CALL HER WILD (A. Allen) crossed her she was happy with her position and the horse travelled nicely until A. Allen elected to allow FREEROCKER to cross and this put her further back than she had wanted. She said that from about the 800m on, when racing behind other horses, HIGH ACE appeared to resent this position, dropped the bit and despite her urgings continued to lose ground and in her opinion was reluctant to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings other than that the mare a low heart rate.
FREEROCKER – M. Cahill reported that it had not been his intention to lead, however when the horse was caught wide in the early stages and was overracing, he elected to allow it to stride forward and eventually find the lead at the 700m. M. Cahill was fined $200 for weighing in of one kilogram overweight.
ETRANGERE – Slow to begin.
