GENERAL
Due to a heavy shower of rain following the running of Race 5 a delegate of riders expressed concerns to stewards regarding a section of the track near the 400m. After an inspection of that section of the track remedial work was undertaken to move the rail out over this section of the track to allow the meeting to continue. Due to this delay new race times were amended as follows:-
Race 6 @ 4.05 p.m.
Race 7 @ 4.35 p.m.
Race 8 @ 5.05 p.m.
RACE 1: Tru Flow Services Ratings Band 0-65 H’Cap – 800m
I'M CHILLIN – Began awkwardly and shifted out. When questioned as to the disappointing performance jockey M. Cahill stated the horse travelled well in the early and middle stages however, did not respond to his riding when placed under pressure in the home straight and compounded leaving the 200m mark. Trainer D. Forster stated that although it was the filly's first run from a short freshen up she was most disappointed with the performance and in view of this advised it was now her intention that I'M CHILLIN be sent for a spell. A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities.
SHANDIEN – Began awkwardly and was tightened for room on jumping away.
ALI MOUNTAIN – Tightened for room at the start.
MR RAINMAKER – Raced wide for the majority.
BALKAN BAMBINO – Raced wide for the majority.
LITTLE RED HEN – Lost an off hind plate in running.
RACE 2: Sammut Bulow Class 3 SW Plate – 2150m
PIROLO – Trainer S. O'dea advised it would be the intention to ride the horse in a more forward position today if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly. Approaching the 400m improved onto heels and had to be checked.
LIDO – Began awkwardly.
GLAMORGAN BABE – Shifted out shortly after the start. Jockey Bogenhuber dropped her whip near the 400m.
COUP D'ETAT – Inconvenienced shortly after the start.
MOSSIMO – Approaching the 1500m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of GLAMORGAN BABE which shifted in. Jockey S. Bogenhuber (GLAMORGAN BABE) was advised to exercise more care. Shifted a near hind plate in running.
BLUE MINI – Shifted wider to improve leaving the 800m and raced wide from that point onwards.
AHA I SEE – Raced in restricted room near the 400m for a short distance.
RACE 3: Nugrow QTIS 2YO H’Cap – 1100m
Trainer P. Butterworth was fined $100.00 for failing to declare T. Bell as the rider of COUNTER MEAL by the prescribed time
The start of this race was delayed after the rider of GYPSY AMIE requested a veterinary examination of the colt. Following the examination GYPSY AMIE was cleared to start.
The start was further delayed when SWEET REPEAT became fractious in the barriers. SWEET REPEAT was declared a late scratching at 1.49 p.m. by order of stewards acting on veterinary advice. All monies invested on SWEET REPEAT were ordered to be refunded. Deductions applicable to bets placed on winner and placegetters prior to 1.49 p.m.:-
13 cents in the dollar for the winner - #10 (PICAVINO)
18 cents in the dollar for the place of winner - #10 (PICAVINO)
16 cents in the dollar for the 2nd place - #1 (CAPITANEAR)
17 cents in the dollar for the 3rd place - #4 (COUNTER MEAL)
Trainer R. Coveney was advised that a further barrier certificate must be produced prior to the filly being permitted to race again.
GYPSY AMIE – Slow to begin. A post race veterinary examination of the colt revealed it to be sore in the near fore leg. Connections were advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced prior to the colt racing again.
SYN CITY – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Stewards afforded Jockey M. Cahill to comment on the performance. Jockey Cahill stated that after beginning awkwardly he settled further back than anticipated. He further added that after racing comfortably in the early and middle stages of the race the filly proved disappointing when placed under pressure in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination of the SYN CITY revealed no abnormalities and a swab sample was taken.
DON'T DENY US – Initially slow to begin and was inconvenienced at the start and lost considerable ground. Raced ungenerously in the early stages of the race. Connections were advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding's racing manners.
CURTAILMENT – A short distance after the start when racing ungenerously shifted in making heavy contact with another runner, continued to race ungenerously for the majority of the race and then hung out rounding the home turn and raced greenly in the home straight. Connections were advised that a warning would be placed on the filly's racing manners. Trainer K. Schweida advised stewards that in light of today's performance he would experiment with the filly's racing gear.
PRECIOUS RULER – Bumped heavily a short distance after the start. Approaching the 600m improved onto heels and had to be steadied.
RACE 4: Pennywise Ipswich Fillies & Mares Maiden H’Cap – 1100m
Due to a misunderstanding App A. Fancourt was unable to fulfil her engagement on FOR ME ARGENTINA. Stewards subsequently permitted App B. Stower to be substituted as the rider of that horse.
AWESOME MORE – Commenced to buck soon after the start and took no competitive part in the race. Jockey P. Timbery was dislodged near the winning post when his saddle shifted to the near side of the horse. After being attended to by the ambulance officers with concerns of a sore left knee, and declining to be transported to hospital for further observation Jockey Timbery was advised to seek further medical attention and was further advised that he would require a medical clearance before being permitted to ride again.
Trainer T. Timbery was advised that AWESOME MORE must officialy trial to the satisfaction of stewards before being permitted to race again.
IRIANA SAGA – Began awkwardly. Hung out rounding home turn.
FLAUTINO – Began awkwardly and shifted in bumping another runner.
HONEY HOLT – Bumped at the start.
ANOTHER GIRL – Hung in and had to be steadied near the 900m.
MILADY HONG KONG – Overraced in the early stages. Raced wide throughout.
FOR ME ARGENTINA – Raced wide throughout.
RACE 5: McMillan Kelly Thomas Lawyers Colts, Geldings & Entires Maiden H’Cap – 1100m
Stewards accepted App J. Orman's explanation for his dual engagement in this race and permitted App S. Fawke to be substituted as the rider of TRIPLE AXEL.
FINNERO – Hampered at the start. Near the 150m mark became unbalanced and had to be corrected.
PROSPECTING - Hampered at the start.
SACKFUL – Improved onto the heels of other runners from the 900m until the 800m and had to be steadied.
CARRY TO GOLD – Raced wide for the majority. A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities.
ISPAHAN – Examined at the barriers after having kicked out at the fence in the parade ring and was cleared to start. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding, which finished at the tail of the field, revealed no significant abnormalities.
RACE 6: Savige Pest Control Ratings Band 0-70 H'Cap – 1680m
HARDMAN HARRY – Slow to begin.
HUSSY ERIN – Slow to begin.
LARIMUS – Slow to begin.
HI MACKAY – Approaching the 1400m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of WITHOUT GRIEF, which shifted in. App G. Goold (WITHOUT GRIEF) was severely reprimanded and advised to show greater care in similar circumstances. When questioned as to the performance of HI MACKAY App M. McGuren stated that in his opinion the horse was not entirely comfortable in the conditions of the track following the track downgrade. App McGuren further noted that the horse had failed previously when racing on rain affected surfaces. Stewards noted his explanation.
WITHOUT GRIEF - Shifted in and away from another runner near the 400m and made contact with the running rail.
Following the running of this event the track was downgraded to a Soft 6 retrospective.
RACE 7: JR Stevens Class 3 SW Plate – 1200m
The start was delayed when STELLARCRAFT proved difficult to load. Trainer R. Drysdale was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse's barrier manners.
VINTAGE BON – Slow to begin.
ROCK HUNTER – Slow to begin. When questioned as to the disappointing performance jockey B. Stewart stated that after being slow to begin the gelding was reluctant to stretch out and in his opinion did not appreciate the prevailing track conditions. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities. A swab sample was taken.
AQUATOR – Shortly after the start commenced to overrace and had to be steadied from heels for some distance.
SELFIE – Slow to begin. Raced wide for the majority.
RACE 8: Swichettes Ladies Raceday Class 1 H’Cap – 1350m
BETICAN - Connections advised the horse would be ridden more forward today if circumstances permit. Began awkwardly and lost ground settling at the rear of the field.
MORVEN – Slow to begin.
BY ORDER – Slow to begin. Bumped near the 150m.
RING KING – Hung out rounding the home turn.
WE'RE READY – Forced wider rounding the home turn.
IRISH MAMBO – Near the 200m shifted out under pressure.
CAVU – Bumped near the 200m. Raced wide without cover for the majority of the race.
BLESSINGS – Shifted in under pressure near the 150m mark.
