Race 1: Teamcupcakes QTIS 3yo Class 1 Plate – 800m

ROUND ‘EM UP – Missed the start.

Race 2: Swichettes QTIS 2yo H’cap – 1020m

Consideration was given to a protest lodged by J. Byrne, rider of the 2nd placegetter, Sassy Style, against Aileach being declared the winner, alleging interference 100m after the start. On the evidence it was established that Aileach shifted in when not fully clear of Sassy Style, resulting  in him having to restrain his mount and lose some ground at that point.  Whilst stewards conceded the extent of the interference was in the vicinity of the finishing margin at the finish, they also took into account that SASSY STYLE was at least 2 lengths ahead of Aileach but then finished stronger in the home straight to win the race and therefore the protest was dismissed. Subsequently,  Apprentice E. Ljung pleaded  guilty to  a charge of careless riding in that  she permitted her mount to shift in 100m after the start when not sufficiently clear of Sassy Style, causing that horse to be checked severely. Apprentice Ljung was suspended for a period of 12 days, to commence at midnight, 4 March 2018 and to expire at midnight, 16 March 2018.

SASSY STYLE – Became fractious in the gates and reared as the start was effected.

MIRACLES APLENTY – Bumped heavily on 2 occasions near the 800m. Hung out rounding the home turn.

SET BEAT - Bumped heavily on 2 occasions near the 800m.  Tired over the concluding stages and finished tailed off.  The horse was scoped post race, which revealed it to be showing signs of a displaced soft palate.  Trainer B. Sturgess advised it would now be treated and sent for a short spell. Stewards further advised that a veterinary clearance must be provided and that the horse must perform satisfactorily in an official trial prior to racing again.

Race 3: Boom Racing F&M Class 3 H’cap – 1020m

LIPS ‘N HIPS  - Correct weight was delayed to ascertain whether the horse afforded a fair start.  Stewards ascertained that as the start was effected Lips ‘N Hips, which was being handled by a barrier attendant, reared as the gates opened, losing considerable  ground.  Subsequently stewards found that the horse was not impeded by the attendant and declared the horse a starter.    Apprentice jockey A. Sewell was reminded of his obligations  to ride his mounts right out to the finish line.

Race 4: Tridan Electrical Maiden Plate – 1350m

Race 5: Sammut Bulow Maiden Plate – 1350m

SO YOU WISH – Whilst parading to the start, the bridle became detached, resulting in jockey M. Cahill being dislodged and the horse cantering a circuit of the course riderless. The horse was subsequently declared a late scratching 1.50 pm on veterinary advice with the following deductions applicable.

8 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets

Race 10:  City Of Ipswich Class 4 H’cap  - 1350m

On return to scale a protest was lodged by jockey L. Cassidy, rider of the 2nd placegetter, Gregory, against Lyricist being declared the winner, alleging interference over the final 200m.  After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the patrol video, stewards found that near the 250m, Lyricist shifted out marginally, slightly inconveniencing  GREGORY.  Thereafter both horses shifted ground of their own accord.   As stewards could not attribute the shift of both horses solely to Lyricist, and bearing in mind the long head margin at the finish, stewards did not consider the inconvenience at the 250m suffered by GREGORY  exceeded the  margin and therefore dismissed the objection.
