AMERICAN JAZZ – Shortly after the start was bumped on the hind quarters and became very unbalanced. Held up approaching the home turn. Near the 200m laid in and brushed with DARKENED DESTINY.  When asked by stewards to comment regarding the tactics adopted and his decision to move from a one-off position near the 1100m down to the rail, Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester stated at that point of the race he was racing in restricted room with the turn approaching and when space availed itself to his inside, he elected to take that position rather than possibly placing his mount in an awkward position.  Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester also stated that the gelding raced very one paced today and whilst he did have some difficulty obtaining clear running approaching the home turn, he was slightly disappointed in the gelding’s finishing effort. He also added that near the 150m when under pressure it shifted in and away from COURS VITE which improved rapidly to his outside.

TOBA – Over raced early. Laid out when placed under pressure in the home straight.  When asked regarding the tactics adopted, in particular as to why the gelding settled in a more forward position as opposed to its most recent starts, Jockey T. Stewards whilst mindful that the shift from DREAM SONG was only minor advised Apprentice C. Waddell to exercise greater care in similar situations. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination which revealed the gelding to have sustained a mild abrasion to the near hind pastern. Stewards also questioned Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester regarding the tactics he adopted and as to why he was not more assertive and pressure his mount from the 800m. Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester stated that he was mindful of the instructions that the filly performs best when allowed to track another runner forward and to do so from the 800m would be detrimental to its finishing effort. Stewards also spoke to stable foreman Todd Pollard, the representative for Neasham Racing, regarding the riding instructions issued to Jockey J.Guthmann-Chester. Mr Pollard stated the filly performs best when able to improve into the race with cover. Stewards when assessing the ride, considering the instructions and whilst mindful of the later interference suffered at the 750m noted Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester’s comments.
