GENERAL
When Jockey B. Thornton was injured, and Jockey C. Graham was unavailable due to suspension, Stewards permitted replacements as per the Stewards’ Race-day Summary. Jockey Thornton was advised he would require a medical clearance prior to racing again.
Race 1: TAB MAIDEN PLATE (1680m)
GRAPE EXPECTATIONS – Slow to begin and reluctant to muster early speed. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Trainer P. Shailer was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding’s record for being slow to begin.
SAVEA – Crowded for room near the 1500m when LADY MATILDA was carried inwards and became unbalanced. Steadied near the 1400m when SACRED SHIKOBA shifted in when insufficiently clear. Jockey W. O’Connell pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR131(a) in that leaving the 1500m when riding his mount forward, he shifted in when insufficiently clear of CONVO ridden by K. Wilson-Taylor dictating that runner in causing LADY MATILDA, ridden by G. Cartwright to race in restricted room which was taken in and making contact with SAVEA, ridden by Apprentice C. Collis, which became unbalanced. Shortly thereafter when continuing to ride his mount forward, Jockey O’ Connell crossed into the line SAVEA when insufficiently clear which was obliged to steady from heels. Jockey O’Connell’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 days, commencing midnight Saturday, 17 May 2025 and to conclude Midnight Sunday, 25 May 2025. Raced keenly for some distance thereafter.
CONVO – Dictated inwards and crowded LADY MATILDA near the 1500m when SACRED SHIKOBA shifted in when insufficiently clear.
LADY MATILDA – Bumped on the hindquarters near the 1500m when CONVO was taken in by SACRED SHIKOBA. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey G. Cartwright advised that the mare felt uncomfortable in its action throughout the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a tendon injury to the off-foreleg. Trainer I. Livingstone was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to racing again.
SACRED SHIKOBA – Connections advised it would be the intention for the mare to be ridden further forward. Allowed to stride forward and obtain the lead near the 1500m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor post-race recovery. Trainer D. Lane was advised the mare would now have its nominations at metropolitan meetings refused until its form improved.
Race 2: GREAT NORTHERN QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE (1680m)
Correct weight was delayed allowing QAS officers to attend to Jockey R. Maloney who became unwell upon dismounting. When it became apparent that Jockey Maloney would be unable to weigh in, Stewards declared correct weight under AR 208(3)(b).
CHAYSE 'N' LEISA – Began awkwardly.
HIDEYOSHI – Raced keenly in the early stages.
THINK LIKE PADDY (NZ) – Held-up for clear running rounding the home-turn.
TULONG – Raced wide for the majority. Bumped rounding the home-turn when SOME GIRLS shifted out from the heels of PEAR BELLINI. Hung-out under pressure in the home straight.
DUBIAS MISS – Raced keenly in the early stages.
PEAR BELLINI – Connections advised it would be their intention for the filly to be ridden further forward. After being caught wide in the early stages settled mid-field with cover. Took the crossing awkwardly near the 1400m.
ROTHELLY – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
SOME GIRLS – Obliged to shift wider when PEAR BELLINI shifted out to improve and bumped TULONG.
STROMBOLI DELIGHT – Began awkwardly.
KOOJAN (NZ) – Began awkwardly before from the wide barrier was restrained to obtain a position with cover. Took the crossing awkwardly near the 1400m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
Following the running of the race, Jockey R. Maloney was examined by QAS and stood down from the remainder of his engagements. Jockey Maloney was advised he would require a medical clearance prior to riding again.
Race 3: GORDON'S GIN QTIS TWO-YEAR-OLD HANDICAP (1100m)
GUAC ON – Raced wide until the 600m. Laid-out rounding the home-turn. Raced greenly in the home straight. Shifted out slightly under pressure over the concluding stages.
RITUALIZE – Began awkwardly and shifted out hampering INSTA WORTHY.
YUNA IS PIERATA – When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester advised in his opinion the colt may have come to the end of its preparation. Trainer T. Sears concurred with the opinion of Jockey Guthmann-Chester and advised the colt would now be spelled.
CAT CALL – Laid-out rounding the home-turn.
SPOILT ROTTEN – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced wide for the majority. Raced greenly in the home straight.
GREEN SPRING – Stewards permitted Jockey R. Dolan to be declared the replacement rider when Jockey R. Maloney was indisposed. Began awkwardly and lost ground.
INSTA WORTHY – Severely hampered on jumping and lost ground.
SHORTCUT – Slow to begin.
Race 4: BARRIER REEF POOLS MAIDEN HANDICAP (1200m)
KING BOOM – Began awkwardly.
POROTO (NZ) – Near the 900m improved onto the heels of PRIVATE EQUITY and had to be steadied. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester stated although the gelding was inclined to race keenly in the early stages, it failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure and proved disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
XTRA LA VITA – Slow to begin.
EASY LOVE – Stewards permitted Jockey A. Mallyon to replace Jockey R. Maloney who was indisposed.
IKUMA – Began awkwardly Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced wide for the majority.
AVIOR – Raced keenly in the middle stages.
SUSPICIOUS LOVE – Raced wide for the majority.
BOOTS WITH THE FUR – Began awkwardly.
Race 5: SCHWEPPES BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP (1500m)
QUOTHQUAN – Slow to begin. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
HALLSIDE MARTINI – Very slow to begin. Trainer J. Edwards was advised a warning would be placed on the mare’s record.
TOO HARD TO REFUSE – Began awkwardly. Laid-out rounding the home-turn. Apprentice C. Collis advised that in his opinion, the gelding may appreciate a drop back in distance.
RASHFORD – Held-up for clear running rounding the home-turn. Entering the home straight raced in restricted room when TOO HARD TO REFUSE laid out despite the efforts of its rider.
BITOFTHEBLARNEY (NZ) – Raced keenly in the early stages. Had some difficulty obtaining clear running approaching the 200m.
FEARLESS THINKING (NZ) – Laid in onto heels in the middle stages and over-raced throughout. Raced wide for the majority. Trainer J. Healy advised it would be his likely intention to retire the mare.
Race 6: RAY WHITE IPSWICH CLASS 4 HANDICAP (1680m)
TYNDRUM GOLD (GB) – Bumped on jumping. Raced wide from the 1000m.
SUPER CHILLED – Stewards permitted Jockey N. Callow to replace Jockey R. Maloney. Connections advised it would be the intention for the mare to be ridden further forward. Ridden accordingly. Bumped with TEXAS FIREBALL when attempting to shift out to obtain clear running approaching the home-turn. Jockey N. Callow was reminded of his obligations under the provisions of AR132(6)(a) in relation to using his whip forward of the shoulder.
DOWNEY – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
TEXAS FIREBALL – Raced wide until the 1000m. Bumped with SUPER CHILLED approaching the home-turn.
BETTER BE NORDY – Began awkwardly shifted out and bumped CANADIAN EXPRESS. Near the 1000m taken wider when MISTING shifted out after improving onto heels. Raced wide thereafter. Commenced to weaken upon entering the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor post-race recovery. Trainer’s Representative J. Coetze was advised a veterinary clearance inclusive of an endoscopic examination would be required prior to trialling to the satisfactions of Stewards prior to racing again.
CAPE CRUSADER – Raced keenly in the middle stages. Raced in restricted room over the concluding stages.
BRINGME – Raced keenly in the early stages. Improved onto heels near the 1000m and shifted out when the pace slackened. Weakened over the concluding stages. Trainer B. Azel was advised the gelding would now have its nominations at metropolitan meetings refused until its form improved.
CANADIAN EXPRESS – Bumped on jumping.
LA COMETA (NZ) – Hampered leaving the 1000m when BETTER BE NORDY attempted to shift back in to obtain cover. Approaching the home-turn obliged to race in restricted room and was steadied before shifting wider approaching the 200m to obtain clear running.
SPILL THE SECRET – Jockey R. Dolan dropped his whip near the 150m.
MISTING – Raced keenly in the early stages. Steadied from heels of SUPER CHILLED near the 1000m before being shifted out carrying BETTER BE NORDY wider.
Race 7: XXXX BAT OUT OF HELL (1100m)
NETTUNO - Stewards permitted Jockey A. Mallyon to replace Jockey R. Maloney who was indisposed. Slow to begin.
WANDA ROX – Held-up and unable to improve between the 500m and the early part of the home straight. When asked to comment on the tactics adopted, Jockey N. Callow stated that no specific instructions had been issued. Jockey Callow advised after beginning well and with significant speed shown from runners to his outside Jockey Callow felt that due to that pressure, he elected to restrain and take cover behind the leader. He further that added he had some difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home-turn and in the early part of the home straight. Jockey Callow further added, if he had elected to hold the lead, it would have increased the tempo being set at that stage of the race and would have had a detrimental effort to the mare’s finishing efforts. Trainer L. Hatch confirmed that whilst no specific instructions had been issued, it was not his expectation that the WANDA ROX would lead the event. Stewards noted the explanation.
RALPHIE – Near the 200m disappointed for a run between THE LUCKY ALIEN which rolled in slightly, and BRING ME CASH which was shifted out and away from WANDA ROX which was improving to its inside and had to be steadied. Obliged to shift back in near the 150m to secure clear running.
BRING ME KASH – Began awkwardly. Steadied off the heels of HOLY RACKET near the 600m which shifted in when not fully clear. Jockey A. Jones (HOLY RACKET) was reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a) for careless riding.
FLAG HALL – Approaching the home-turn when over-racing, shifted out and bumped THE LUCKY ALIEN. Lost its near-fore plate in running. A post-race veterinary examination revealed laceration to the forelegs.
AVONE – Raced keenly in the early stages. Steadied off heels near the 800m. Inconvenienced rounding the home-turn and shifted wider.
HOLY RACKET (NZ) – Raced wide until the 600m.
THE LUCKY ALIEN – Began awkwardly. Bumped and became unbalanced when FLAG HALL shifted out approaching the home-turn.
Race 8: SEVEN CLASS 4 HANDICAP (1200m)
STANISLAUS – Connections advised it would be their intention for the gelding to be ridden further forward. Ridden accordingly.
GIVE GIGGLES (NZ) – Had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the home straight. Hampered near the 100m when INDAZA shifted in.
RESTONICA – Began awkwardly before being hampered.
ALDOLFITO – Shifted in under pressure over the concluding stages.
BOONDOCKS – When Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester was to be overweight, Stewards permitted Jockey M. Rodd to be the replacement rider. Jockey Guthmann-Chester was subsequently fined $200 under the provisions of AR190(3) for accepting a ride when overweight. Carried wider near the 500m when ALDOFITO shifted out.
TARPS – Bumped on jumping. Over-raced in the early and middle stages. When asked to comment on the performance, Apprentice J. Hampson advised her mount refused to settle throughout the event which proved detrimental to its finishing efforts, noting that the gelding was first-up since 9 April 2025. Trainer S. Morrisey concurred with the comments of Apprentice Hampson, however added despite of the fast early tempo he had expected a more forward showing. Mr Morrisey undertook to report back to Stewards on the condition of the gelding in coming days. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor recovery.
THE GAMBLING GREEK – Began awkwardly.
CARTWHEELS – Slow to begin. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey D. Thornton could offer no explanation and stated that the mare proved disappointing. Trainer M. Hoysted advised that consideration may be given to giving the mare a freshen-up before continuing the preparation and further added he may step the mare up in distance.
HUSS ON FIRST – Raced wide for the majority. Steadied and shifted out to avoid heels near the 500m when BOONDOCKS was carried out by ALDOLFITO which shifted out. Jockey N. Callow (ALDOLFITO) was reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a) for careless riding.
OBEROI PRINCESS – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have bled from both nostrils for the first occasion. Trainer C. Munce was advised of the provisions of AR79(4).
DIANA'S AFFAIR – Lost its near-fore plate.
INDAZA – Laid in under pressure in the home straight and approaching the 100m shifted in and away from ALDOFITO.
Race 9: BISHOPP BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP (1200m)
GIRL – Connections advised it would be their intention for the mare to be ridden further forward. Ridden accordingly. Laid in near the 100m obliging its rider to stop riding and correct her mount.
I AM A MARVEL – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
LAST CHANCE SALOON – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have the thumps and a poor post-race recovery.
LUTON HOO (NZ) – Fractious in the barriers prior to the start being effected. Began awkwardly and bumped. A post-race veterinary examination revealed mild signs of tying up. Trainer D. Vandyke was advised a veterinary clearance required prior to racing again.
CASROCK – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
LUMENS LENNY – When asked to comment on the tactics adopted, Trainer S. Morrisey stated that the preferred option is to obtain a forward position on the gelding, and that at its most recent start, after drawing wide its rider on that occasion had elected to restrain from the barrier and settled further back on that occasion. Stewards noted the explanation.
MOON SWEEPER – Began awkwardly and bumped.
SMART RECOGNITION – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
