GENERAL
Stewards permitted the following overweight:
Race 7 – D. Smith +1kg
RACE 1: GORDON'S GIN QTIS TWO-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE 800m
The start of this race was delayed approximately 3 minutes after MAGIC INVADER and MISHANI SENORITA both proved difficult to load.
MAGIC INVADER – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying upper respiratory sounds. Trainer C. Anderson was advised that MAGIC INVADER would require a veterinary clearance inclusive of an endoscopic examination prior to resuming racing. Trainer C. Anderson was also advised a warning would be placed on the gelding after proving difficult to load.
SEVEER – Raced wide without cover for the majority of the race. Laid in under pressure in the home straight proving difficult to ride out and having to be corrected by its rider approaching the winning post. Trainer M. Nolan was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding as a result of its racing manners.
FOREIGN PRESS – Improved onto heels near the 500m.
JARDIN DE LYS – Began awkwardly.
LOQUITO – Raced three wide without cover from the 500m.
MISHANI SENORITA – Raced keenly approaching the 400m. Trainer D. Stanbridge was advised a warning would be placed on the filly after proving difficult to load.
RACE 2: THE INDUSTRY SCHOOL MAIDEN PLATE 800m
The start of this race was slightly delayed when DEMES GIRL was slow arriving to the barriers.
MINOR KEY – Dipped in its action approaching the 200m.
MOSCOW CITY – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination after not starting for an extended period of time and was subsequently cleared to start.
DEMES GIRL – Laid out rounding the home turn. For a short distance passing the 200m, Apprentice C. Krahnen had difficulty securing her reins.
EQUINE ART – Raced three wide without cover for the majority.
KWINTERNA – Steadied approaching the 600m when racing in restricted room.
MONTE OUT'N'ABOUT – Laid out approaching the 400m.
RAPT IN PINK – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination after not starting for an extended period of time and was subsequently cleared to start. Slow into stride.
CAPITAL LETTERS – Slow to begin and was unable to muster early speed to maintain contact with the remainder of the field. Trainer T. Churchill was advised a warning would be placed on the filly for being uncompetitive.
FANCI FLEUR – Jockey J. Murphy reported his mount hung out rounding the home turn.
RACE 3: TAB MAIDEN HANDICAP 1700m
The start of this race was delayed approximately 3 minutes after NEXTA SANTA ANA was fractious, reared in the barriers and became cast. NEXTA SANTA ANA was removed from the barriers and subsequently was declared a late scratching at 1:44pm on veterinary advice. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards declared that all bets placed on NEXTA SANTA ANA be refunded with the following deductions to apply to all successful wagers placed prior to 1:44pm:
1st – CHAYSE ‘N’ PENNY 2cents win, 3cents place
2nd – SKORPIOS ISLE 2cents place
3rd – PRAISE YOU 2cents place
Trainer B. Ahrens was advised NEXTA SANTA ANA would be required to obtain a further barrier certificate prior to resuming racing.
THE TOURIST – Made the crossing awkwardly. Raced keenly near the 1400m. Under pressure from the 700m and commenced to tail off. When asked to comment, Jockey R. Jamieson advised that the gelding may not have handled the short back up from Beaudesert 8 July. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer R. Howard was advised THE TOURIST would be required to trial satisfactorily prior to resuming racing.
PREFER TO DANCE (NZ) – After being caught wide in the early stages, pressed forward leaving the 1400m taking up a position outside the leader passing the 1000m.
BERTUS – Laid out passing the 200m before having to be corrected.
FLASH ONE HEY – Slow to begin.
SKORPIOS ISLE – Shifted wider to improve leaving the 600m.
RACE 4: GREAT NORTHERN CLASS 1 PLATE 2200m
TERMITE – Raced three wide without cover in the early stages before racing keenly when being restrained to obtain cover near the 1500m. Stewards queried the tactics adopted on the gelding, particularly the reasons Apprentice A. Graham elected to continuing restraining her mount after finding cover nearer the inside running rail near the 1500m. Apprentice A. Graham, in the presence of Apprentice Mentor Mr M. Cahill, concurred that she had erred in that after obtaining cover she continued to restrain her mount, becoming detached from the tail of the field. Stewards referred the matter to Mr M. Cahill and the Apprentice training team for further tuition.
BETTER DRAW (NZ) – Became awkwardly placed on heels soon after the start.
PROCLAIMER – Shifted out and bumped on jumping. Raced wide from the 600m.
LILICA EBET – Slow to begin, bumped soon after and became unbalanced.
TOUCHOFCLASS (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages whilst leading.
RACE 5: BARRIER REEF POOLS FILLIES & MARES RATINGS BAND 0 - 58 HANDICAP 1200m
HI JULES – Bumped rounding the home turn when shifting out to improve.
AERIAL ARSENAL – Raced three wide with cover in the early and middle stages. Bumped rounding the home turn. When questioned regarding his vigor over the final 200m of the event, Jockey J. Stanley stated that after being obliged to race wide for most of the event, the mare responded moderately when asked for an effort on straightening however had, in his opinion, peaked on its run and was commencing to tire and in doing so became inclined to lay in, therefore in his efforts to keep his mount balanced and racing true he was unable to ride the mare with full vigor, though nonetheless still pressured his mount until the finish of the event. Stewards noted the explanation nonetheless, Jockey J Stanley was reminded to ensure his riding is always beyond reproach concerning such matters.
INSPIRED DREAM – Slow into stride. Held up for clear running from the 500m until approaching the 200m.
KIRRAGIRL – Laid out under pressure in the home straight.
MOOD KILLER – Slow to begin. Raced keenly near the 800m. Dipped in its action approaching the 200m.
STORMSTOUT – Raced ungenerously throughout the middle stages. Bumped the inside running rail near the 500m.
FULLY SUBSCRIBED – Raced three wide without cover in the early stages. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
IMPERIONESS – Raced keenly near the 800m.
DIVINE KAMEHALANI – Raced keenly passing the 1000m. Under pressure from the 500m and weakened noticeably over the final 200m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer B. Smith was advised a warning would be placed on the mare for its poor performance.
MISS HELMUT – Laid out and made the home turn awkwardly.
DIVINE RENDEZVOUS – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
RACE 6: SCHWEPPES BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP 1200m
LION CLASS – Raced keenly on heels during the middle stages. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
MATERIALIST – Raced keenly for some distance near the 700m.
NETTLES – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Raced keenly whilst attempting to restrain to a position with cover near the 800m.
FLYING SHELLY – Raced keenly in the middle stages.
MANHATTAN'S – Hampered shortly after the start and lost ground.
RACE 7: RAY WHITE IPSWICH COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES RATINGS BAND 0 - 58 HANDICAP 1200m
The start of this race was delayed after Jockey J. Stanley was dislodged from his mount RYLOV and injured his left shoulder. As Jockey J. Stanley was unable to fulfil his ride and there was no available rider to replace him, RYLOV was subsequently declared a late scratching at 4:10pm. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards declared that all bets placed on RYLOV be refunded with the following deductions to apply to all successful wagers placed prior to 4:10pm:
1st – MACHINE HEAD 23c win, 16c place
2nd – IN NO DOUBT 20c place
3rd – CHISUM 23c place
Trainer R Dart was advised a warning would be placed on the geldings pre-race manners as a result.
BLUMSTIEN – Passing the 1000m, steadied from the heels of SUENITO (D. Smith) which shifted in when not fully clear. Jockey D. Smith was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.
CALMER KARMA – Held up for clear running from passing the 400m until the 300m.
DECIMUS – Brushed the rail passing the 600m. Apprentice K. Lenton, in the presence of M. Cahill, was reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding after Apprentice K. Lenton attempted to improve into a narrow run near the 400m and ultimately had to restrain when tightened between FENTON and CALMER KARMA. Stewards also referred the matter to Mr M. Cahill and the Apprentice training team for further tuition. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Apprentice
MACHINE HEAD – Raced keenly in the middle stages.
ESTE DIA – Raced keenly in the middle stages.
FENTON – Jockey J. Bayliss reported post-race that he was suffering from upper leg muscle pain on returning to scale. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled bilaterally on the 2nd occasion. Trainer I. Turner was advised FENTON would now incur a lifetime ban from racing in Australia.
FORTY TIMES (NZ) – Had some difficulty obtaining clear running over the final 100m.
IN NO DOUBT – In the early and middle stages raced three wide without cover. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
SUENITO – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
